1. One method for favoring the formation of the ester is to add excess acetic acid. Suggest
another method, involving the right-hand side of the equation, that will favor the
formation of the ester.
2. Why is it easier to remove excess acetic acid from the products than excess isopentanol?
3. Why is the reaction mixture extracted with NaHCO 3 solution? Give an equation and
explain its relevance.
4. How will you tell when the acids have all been removed during the extraction steps?
5. Why is saturated NaCl solution added in the last extraction step with water?
