I. INTRODUCTION TO INTEGRAL CALCULUS

Integral calculus, branch of calculus concerned with the theory and applications of integrals. While differential calculus focuses on rates of change, such as slopes of tangent
lines and velocities, integral calculus deals with total size or value, such as lengths, areas, and volumes. The two branches are connected by the fundamental theorem of calculus,
which shows how a definite integral is calculated by using its antiderivative (a function whose rate of change, or derivative, equals the function being integrated). For
example, integrating a velocity function yields a distance function, which enables the distance traveled by an object over an interval of time to be calculated. As a result, much of
integral calculus deals with the derivation of formulas for finding antiderivatives. The great utility of the subject emanates from its use in solving differential equations.

INDEFINITE INTEGRALS
An indefinite integral is a function that takes the antiderivative of another function. It is visually represented as an integral symbol, a function, and then a dx at the
end. The indefinite integral is an easier way to symbolize taking the antiderivative. The indefinite integral is related to the definite integral, but the two are not the same.
There were two points to this last example. The first point was to get you thinking about how to do these problems. It is important initially to remember that we are really just
asking what we differentiated to get the given function.

The other point is to recognize that there are actually an infinite number of functions that we could use and they will all differ by a constant.

Now that we’ve worked an example let’s get some of the definitions and terminology out of the way.
