Practice questions [4.1]

1. A. Abiotic
B. Biotic components
2. Biotic components such as humans have the ability to produce copies of themselves
by the process known as reproduction whereas abiotic components do not reproduce.
All biotic components are able to respond to stimuli in the external environment e.g:
living things respond to changes in light, heat, sound etc. whereas abiotic components
do not respond to external stimuli.
3. A. A pond is a small body of freshwater that does not flow. Water is always available
in the pond. However, in deserts, due to very less rainfall, availability of water is also
scarce.
B. i. Plants in desert habitat are succulent and store water in fleshy leaves , stems or
roots and also animals such as camels store fat in their hump. This helps them survive
for a long time without food and water.
ii. Aquatic animals living in the ponds have streamlined bodies as in fish and webbed
feet as in ducks to help them swim easily. The aquatic plants are light and spongy to
help them float in water.
Desert animals like the camel store food in their humps due to less vegetation in
deserts and less availability of food. Desert plants like cactus have thick and fleshy
stems to store water and leaves are reduced to spines to avoid water loss.
