1 Text: Crowding
Look around you! What do you see? What do you smell? If you live in a city, you probably
see many people, you hear the big noise of traffic and you smell the pollution from cars and
factory smokes.
5 Nowadays, we enter a modern world, a new period of history. Before, most people were
farmers, they lived in the country. Now, many of them are leaving the farms moving into the
cities. The cities are growing very quickly; most of them are very crowded. Then, people are
driving more cars, burning more fuel, using more water, making more rubbish and producing
goods in factories. Life in cities becomes
10 an important problem.
Some governments try to plan the future of their cities. They are building new roads, setting
up new buildings and houses, in search of more water and limiting population growth in

Text : Means of Information in Madagascar

1 In Madagascar, we mainly have three means of information: newspapers, radios and

televisions.
Newspapers are read by a lot of people in town. Articles and their illustrations are generally
interesting. Besides, newspapers may be bought by everyone because they are not expensive.
5 Unfortunately neither daily nor weekly papers can reach all people especially those
who live far front the city.
Radio is also another efficient means of information. It does not cost a lot so it is the most used
mass media in Madagascar. Every home, even in remote areas, may have a radio set. All kinds of
information such as weather forecasts news as well as music are broadcast.
10 Another type of mass media is television. However it seems to be only resented for city
dwellers until now. This is because there is no electricity in the countryside and it is rather costly for
tire majority of the population.
As a conclusion, the development of means of information, contributes to the development of a
country so the government should find a way to make the Malagasy people have easier access to

Text : THE CYCLONE CHEDZA
1 A cyclone hit the most part of Madagascar at a speed of about 220 kms an hour by the end of
February through mid-March 2015. The East coast was probably the hardest damaged. In addition
to the wind and the rain, there was the rise of the sea. As a result houses, schools, warehouses, and

were blown down. All the houses were totally destroyed. And in the rest, only certain concrete made
buildings resisted to the cyclone.
A death roll of more than 70 was registered. Thousands of people became homeless. Some
of them managed to stay with friends or relatives. Many had to be sheltered and looked after in tents,
10 schools and townhalls.
Help was not long to come. Rice, dry beans, canned food, medicines, nets were provided

(...) Malagasy education system does not meet the needs of many school
children. Out of 100 children who enter the first grade, only about 66 complete their
primary school education.
Most Malagasy children study in dilapidated, overcrowded classrooms with few
learning materials, and over half of primary school teachers are recruited by parents’
associations and have limited or no training.
Annual cyclones and tropical storms damage school structures every year. (...)
Funds for rebuilding are limited, and there is an accumulation of temporary classroom
structures that are now used permanently.
Today, the impact of 2009 political crisis is an additional challenge for children’s
education. Most households have experienced a loss in revenues, while the price of
basic foodstuffs has risen. Poverty increases likelihood of children not attending
school, especially if they are needed to work to help supplement household income.

family needs. But they usually work in precarious conditions of employment in
comparison with men.
First of all, when a firm needs to recruit some employees, the manager always
prefers men to women. Besides, women often earn less than men, though both two
are titular of the same degree. And a woman is not likely to hold an appointment in the
staff as long as a man turns up to be her rival.
On the other hand, a woman is to be busy herself with a lot of work in the
household. While her husband spends his time in drinking beer, watching TV or
reading a newspaper, she is doing the cook or looking after her children.
This situation has to come to an end. Men and women are to be on equal terms,
not only at work but also at home. And what about playing in the same football team?

Water use and Hygiene
Sahondra Lalao, 32, has been teaching other women in Miandrivazo,
Madagascar, about the importance of good hygiene. Women like Sahondra, a local
mother of three, are vital in preventing the spread of water-related diseases that kill
4,000 children in Madagascar every year.
“ Model mothers” are community-based hygiene and sanitation promoters.
Volunteers are given training in good hygiene behaviour and become advocates for
health, visiting others in the community to spread hygiene messages.
Sahondra says: “ We’ve learned about handwashing. We go to households, take
soaps and really show people what to do. What we do is first pay them a visit, then set
another appointment and ask them what they did during the time that has passed.
“ It is very challenging because people are still living in the past practices. We are
trying to get them changed but it’s difficult to leave a past habit.”
“ I have really seen the change that it has brought to the health o f my family.
This is why I have been active in educating my friends. Before, the last thing I

The traveller’s tree

Ravinala just can be found in Madagascar and some countries of South East
Asia. Malagasy people also call it “ traveller’s tree” .
Ravinala presents some likeness with banana-tree, but it seems to be an
enormous green fan. It is called “traveller’s tree” because of its qualities. When the
tired ant thirsty traveller arrives near this marvellous plant, he can dip out the juice
from its trunk to satisfy his thirst and to take strength again.
The traveller’s tree is a great wealth for Malagasy flora. Besides, it represents
an irresistible attraction for tourists who visit our country. And lastly, artists as
painter and comp oser may use Ravinala as subject for their picture and their music.
So, we have to take care of this jewel of our national flora.

1 Text: Crowding
Look around you! What do you see? What do you smell? If you live in a city,
you probably see many people, you hear the big noise of traffic and you
smell the pollution from cars and factory smokes.
5 Nowadays, we enter a modern world, a new period of history. Before, most people

moving into the cities. The cities are growing very quickly; most of them are very
crowded. Then, people are driving more cars, burning more fuel, using more water,
making more rubbish and producing goods in factories. Life in cities becomes

Some governments try to plan the future of their cities. They are building new roads,
setting up new buildings and houses, in search of more water and limiting
population growth in certain areas. But city planners are getting worried. People are
