Jason's Big Hike

By Kathleen W. Redman

Jason and his dad were going on a camping trip in the park near his house.
They were going to hike and camp in the park. Jason was worried about being in
the woods during the night.

His dad said, "Look, Jason, I will take your yellow sleeping bag so you can
sleep well." Jason was happy to see his sleeping bag packed up.

Jason and his dad walked into the woods. There were large trees,
medium-sized bushes, and small flowers. They came to a stream, and Jason
looked at the blue water. Jason's dad yelled, "Jump!"

Jason ran to the edge of the water and jumped. He didn't make it over the
stream and landed in the middle. He splashed a lot of water on his dad. They both
laughed and kept hiking over rocks and under tree branches.

At lunchtime Jason and his dad came to a place where there were no trees and
a large rock. Jason's dad helped him up onto the rock. They sat there together and
ate their lunch. They looked at the valley and talked about the hike.

That night Jason and his dad set up the big red tent. Jason got into his yellow sleeping bag. His dad got into a
dark blue sleeping bag.

Just before he went to sleep, Jason thought of all the things he had seen on his hike: the tall trees, the large
rocks, the small flowers, the blue stream, and the place where they had eaten lunch. He went to sleep smiling
about the hike. He slept all night next to his dad and dreamed about the next hike they would take.

The next morning Jason and his dad made breakfast and packed up all their camping things. They remembered
to put out the fire. They remembered to put all their trash in a bag to take with them.

Jason's dad asked him, "Where do you want to hike next?"

Jason looked up at his dad and said, "I don't care where we go as long as I get to hike with you."

Dangers of Decorating Your Body

By Patti Hutchison

Do you want a tattoo? How about piercing your eyebrow, nose, or

tongue? Tattoos and piercings might look cool, but are they safe?

Sue wanted a tattoo. All her friends were getting one. She decided
to go along.

All she wanted was a small ladybug on the top of her foot. But
when she got to the tattoo parlor, there were no ladybug designs.

"I should have stopped, then and there," she says now. "But I
wanted a tattoo so badly. All my friends were there with me. I was
afraid they'd make fun of me if I backed out."

So, she picked another design. When it was over, Sue had a large
butterfly on her ankle.

"At first, I hated it. But I finally decided I'd better get used to it. It is
going to be there for the rest of my life," she says.

Sue was lucky. Even though she was disappointed with the design and the location of her tattoo, things could
have been much worse.

Tattoo artists use needles to prick your skin thousands of times a minute. The needles inject dye into your skin.
That's what makes the picture.

"It hurt really badly," Sue says. "I wasn't ready for that. Halfway through, I wanted so much to stop. But I
knew I couldn't go around with half a butterfly. By the time it was over, my friends said I was very pale. I felt like
I was going to pass out."

Those needles could have caused a lot more pain for Sue. Needles that are not clean can cause diseases. She
could have ended up with HIV or hepatitis. She could have gotten a serious skin infection. She also could have
had a serious allergic reaction to the ink.

Even if the needles are sterile, you can still end up with an infection.

"I had to take special care of my tattoo for a long time. I had to keep ointment on it all the time. I followed the
instructions carefully. I didn't want to get an infection," Sue says.

Sue advises people to, "Think long and hard before you get a tattoo. If I had to do it all again, I would not do it
at all."

So, what about a piercing? It is common to see people with their eyebrows, noses, lips, or tongues pierced. The
biggest danger with these is also the chance of infection.

Many kids will get a piercing on a dare. This is what happened to Tom.

"It was a big mistake. My friend dared me to pierce my ear. So I let him do it. The needle wasn't sterile. I
ended up with a huge infection. I had to take pills and put salve on it to make it heal. It took a long time to get
better. It was really ugly. I wouldn't do that again, even if someone paid me," Tom says.

Even if a sterile needle is used, a piercing can take a long time to heal. Belly buttons and tongues can take up
to a year. They can swell up and turn red and painful. They may cause a lot more trouble than they are worth.

Before you get a tattoo or a piercing, do some investigating. Find a professional to do it. Talk to some other
people who have had work done there. Visit the place before you make an actual appointment. Make sure it is

clean. Ask questions about how they sterilize the equipment.

Remember, you have to live with your body for a long time. Tattoos and piercings are permanent. Don't make
a mistake you are going to regret for the rest of your life.

The Broken Pastry

By Colleen Messina

Rachel the raccoon was on snack duty. Her job was to watch the
people in the backyard. She watched to see if they were eating
anything. Then when the people went inside, the raccoon family could
sneak into the yard. They could get some treats! Today the people had
left a plate of pastries on the table. Some pastries had frosting. The
frosting looked shiny. Two pastries had jelly oozing out of them. One
had dark purple jelly. The other had bright red jelly. One pastry had
green sprinkles on top. Rachel hopped up on the chair and looked at the
pile of sweets. She heard a noise. The people were coming. Quick!
Rachel grabbed a pastry with her little black paw. She ran away. She
hid in a bush. She looked at her treat. It was round and fat. It had pink

County Fire and Rescue work on the extraction of victim in a car
collision with a semi-tractor trailer. Picture taken by Lt. Mark Carr of
Palm Beach County Fire and Rescue

Woo-Woo! Woo-Woo! The alarm at the station rings. As fast as

lightning, five firefighters jump into their coats, pants, and boots and
jump onto the truck. With lights flashing and sirens wailing, they head
out into the night. Soon, they are at the burning house. They grab their
hoses and bravely put out the fire. The firefighters save the day!
Firefighters are great community helpers. They help to protect us by
putting out fires. This is a crucial part of their job. But it is not their
only job. Firefighters respond to many different kinds of 9-1-1 calls.
These men and women are first responders. If there is a car accident, these brave helpers will come and rescue
anyone who is hurt. If someone is having a heart attack, the fire department will be dispatched to help him.
Firefighters also help during floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Firefighters do much more than their name
implies. Maybe they should be called handy heroes instead!

They're Firefighters and Much More!

Questions
1. Besides fighting fires, how else do firefighters help the community?

2. After reading this story you can conclude that ______.

A. Firefighters are important to a community.
B. Firefighters should change their name.
C. It would be easy to be a firefighter.

The Oozing, Melting Clocks of Surrealism

By Colleen Messina

Caption: The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, 1931. Oil

on canvas from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The image of a clock drooping over the side of a table is not a

spectacle you would see in real life. You wouldn't want to rely on a
clock like that to wake you up in the morning! This soft clock is in a
famous painting. The painting has other odd clocks in it, too. This
dramatic art style is called surrealism.

The odd painting with melting clocks is by an artist named Salvador

Dali. It is called The Persistence of Memory. Salvador Dali was a
leader in the surrealism movement, which included both artists and
writers. It began in the early 1920s in Paris, France. Surrealist paintings
are fun to study because they are so bizarre. The subjects are often realistic. However, they are shown in a
perplexing way. Another Dali painting shows a giraffe with its back on fire. You would not want to see a giraffe
like that in a zoo. Surrealist artists tried to surprise everyone. They often succeeded!

Max Ernst was another surrealist artist. One of his early surrealist paintings was called The Elephant Celebes.
It was an oil painting. It showed a large gray mechanical elephant. The creature had a round shape. It had a hose
coming out of it that looked like a trunk. It was a bizarre elephant, indeed!

Surrealist artists wanted to express their deepest thoughts. They filled their art with symbolism. There is no
doubt about it: oozing, melting clocks definitely made people wonder!

The Oozing, Melting Clocks of Surrealism

Questions
1. Where did the surrealism movement start?
A. New York
B. London
C. Paris
D. Venice

2. The surrealists only included artists.

A. true
B. false

3. Which medium did Max Ernst use to create The Elephant Celebes?
A. colored pencils
B. watercolors
C. oils
D. acrylics

4. What is the name of the artist who did the painting of melting clocks?

Let's Be Honest!
By Beth Beutler

"Okay," said Tamara, the self-appointed president of our new club.

"Let's set some rules."

"Here we go," whispered Malcolm quietly. "Miss Take Charge is

going to lay down the law."

I stifled a giggle. Malcolm didn't much care for Tamara at times.

"Silence, please!" Tamara shouted as she banged her gavel on the

makeshift table.

I folded my hands and straightened up. "Yes, ma'am," I responded,

and then everyone laughed.

Tamara rolled her eyes. "People, people, people. We must have order. Now, I suggest that the most important
rule is to be honest always."

"Why do we need that rule?" Josh called out.

"Because honesty is the best policy," Tamara replied. I wished I could wipe that know-it-all look off her face.

"The second rule is to be on time to all meetings. The third would be that all non-officers will rotate bringing
snacks to our meetings. The president must approve all snacks ahead of time."

Everyone groaned. Where did Tamara come up with this stuff?

Bruce stood up. "I'd like to make a comment," he said.

"Go on," Tamara relented.

"I think your rules stink," he said and sat down. Most of the club began rolling on the floor laughing. I
suppressed a grin. Sometimes Tamara deserved it. But I looked up and saw that she nearly had tears in her eyes.
She looked down and swallowed and then looked back up with a determined face.

"Was that really necessary, Bruce?" Tamara asked.

"Well, you said to be honest," Bruce replied while the laughter continued.

I was beginning to feel a little sorry for Tamara. You see, I've known her since she was about five years old.
She's always been a take-charge person. She was a natural leader then and still is. I decided it was time to speak
up.

"Permission to say something, please," I said kindly.

"Yes, Sheila," Tamara replied.

I swallowed the lump in my throat that came from being nervous. "Fellow club members, I'd like to suggest
that we thank Tamara for all she's done for us," I began.

I heard a few "What!?" and "What for!?" comments coming from the others.

"Seriously," I answered, trying to stay calm. "If it weren't for Tamara, we would not have this clubhouse.
Remember how she organized all of us to build it?" I noticed a couple of nodding heads. "Tamara also organizes
and leads our summer neighborhood picnic. She got us started on collecting food for the needy and has helped
many of us understand our homework." I saw a few more heads lowered. "She is a natural leader, and I think that

we should give her a break."

I sat down and started clapping for Tamara. The others soon joined in. Tamara was looking encouraged.

She said, "Thank you, Sheila. I really appreciate your comments and support. I'd also like to apologize. I like
to lead, but I tend to get bossy. Will you all please forgive me?"

Meredith spoke on behalf of the group. "Sure, Tamara. In fact, let's post another rule. Let's always be kind and
encouraging to one another."

"Here, here," everyone agreed.

It seems that honesty coupled with kindness is the best policy of all.

Let's Be Honest!
