Configuring DHCP

Relay Agent for

Remote Networks
with Relay Feature
in Relay
Introduction
DHCP Relay Agent is used to forward
DHCP request packets from one
subnet to another. This is useful when
DHCP server is not on the same subnet
as the requesting client. With the Relay
Feature in Relay, DHCP request
packets can be forwarded over
multiple hops. This presentation will
cover the configuration of DHCP Relay
Agent for remote networks.
What is DHCP Relay Agent?

A DHCP Relay Agent is a network

device that forwards DHCP request
packets from one subnet to another.
The agent receives the request packet
from the client and then forwards it to
the DHCP server. The server then sends
a DHCP offer to the agent which is
then forwarded back to the client. This
allows client devices on different
subnets to obtain IP addresses from a
single DHCP server.
Why use DHCP Relay Agent?

Using a DHCP Relay Agent

reduces the need for multiple
DHCP servers on separate subnets.
Without a relay agent, each subnet
would require its own DHCP server.
This can be costly and difficult to
manage. With a relay agent, a
single DHCP server can serve
multiple subnets. This simplifies
network management and reduces
costs.
Configuring DHCP Relay Agent

To configure a DHCP Relay Agent,

the agent needs to be enabled on
the router that connects the
subnets. The IP address of the
DHCP server also needs to be
configured on the agent. When a
client sends a DHCP request, the
agent intercepts it and forwards it
to the server using the IP address
that was configured. The server
receives the request and responds
with a DHCP offer which is
forwarded back to the client.
Relay Feature in Relay
The Relay Feature in Relay allows
DHCP request packets to be
forwarded over multiple hops. This is
useful when the DHCP server is
located on a remote network that is
several hops away. The relay agent on
each hop forwards the request packet
to the next hop until it reaches the
server. The server then responds with
a DHCP offer which is sent back to the
client using the same path.
Conclusion
Using a DHCP Relay Agent is an effective way to manage IP
addresses on multiple subnets. The agent forwards DHCP request
packets from clients to a central DHCP server, reducing costs and
simplifying network management. The Relay Feature in Relay
extends this functionality by allowing DHCP request packets to be
forwarded over multiple hops. This is useful when the DHCP
server is located on a remote network. Configuring DHCP Relay
Agent is an easy process that can be done on most routers.
