BALL

One of the most popular sports in the world today is volleyball. No one can discount that the
most important part of the game is the actual volleyball ball. The game was created in the late
1800s and since that time the ball has remained the center fixture of play. Learning how to
maneuver and control the ball is the main goal of any player—whether on a pro team or a
hobbyist. The use of the ball is something that players can take a lifetime to master, which
makes for the most challenging and enjoyable part of the play.

PLAYING AREA

The playing court is 18 m long and 9m wide and is surrounded by a free zone 3m
wide on all sides. The playing field is light-colored, flat, rectangular, and symmetrical. The
lines must be drawn in white. The playing court and free zone require additional distinct
colors

PLAYING SURFACE
The only permitted surfaces for FIVB, international, and official tournaments are
hardwood or synthetic. The playing field is made of leveled sand that has been made as
smooth and uniform as possible, devoid of pebbles, shells, and other objects that might injure
players. It is forbidden to play on rough or slippery surfaces.

VOLLEYBALL COURT DIMENSION

The volleyball court specifications require the court to be 18 meters (60

feet) long and 9 meters (30 feet) wide. One of the main features of the volleyball court is a 3-
meter line parallel to the net on each side of the court.

1
LINES ON THE VOLLEYBALL COURT

BOUNDARY LINE
The baselines or end lines on either end of the court. They delineate the line that players must
stand behind when serving and mark the end of the backcourt. Depending on whom you are
speaking to, these lines may be referred to as baselines or end lines.
SIDE LINES
These lines are located on the court's sides. You could see the journalists, coaches, officials,
and other players standing behind these lines. Two players gather on the side lines to make a
replacement.
2
COURT END LINES
The coach limitation line designates the area that volleyball coaches are permitted to occupy
when a game is in progress. This is the region that is behind the attack line and the sidelines.
SERVICE LINE
The server waits behind the service line, which is a small line behind the baseline before each
serves. It is against the rules to cross this line when serving. Although many courts might not
have an extra service line, the baseline nevertheless fulfills the same purpose.
CENTER LINE
Precisely in the center of the court, directly beneath the net, is where the centerline is
situated. The court is split into two equally sized halves by this line. Players who are close to
the net must be aware of this line since crossing it while a point is being played will result in
a penalty.
ATTACK LINE
The attack line separates the front and back row players on either side of the court between
the frontcourt and backcourt. The ball can be offensively attacked from this line as well. A
ball that is above the net cannot be attacked from any place in front of the attack line by back-
row players. Because it is 10 feet out from the net, this line is sometimes known as the "ten-
foot line."

ZONES AND AREAS

FRONT ZONE
On each court, the front zone is limited by the center line's axis and the attack line's rear edge.
The front zone is considered to extend beyond the sidelines to the end of the free zone.

SERVICE ZONE
The service zone is a 9m wide area behind each end line. It is laterally limited by two short
lines, each 15 cm long, drawn 20 cm behind the end line as an extension of the sidelines.
Both short lines are included in the width of the service zone. In-depth, the service zone
extends to the end of the free zone
SUBSTITUTION ZONE
The substitution zone is limited by the extension of both attack lines up to the scorer’s table.
LIBERO REPLACEMENT ZONE
The libero replacement zone is part of the free zone on the side of the team benches, limited
by the extension of the attack line up to the end line.
WARM-UP AREA
3
The warm-up areas, sized approximately 3x3 m, are located in both of the bench side corners,
outside the free zone.
PENALTY AREA
A penalty area, sized approximately 1x1 m and equipped with two chairs, is located in the
control area, outside the prolongation of each end line. They may be limited by a 5cm wide
red line.
