KB Shape Codes

This document contains definitions for shape codes used in scheduling reinforcement bar (rebar) based on British Standard BS 8666. It includes 58 shape codes defined through diagrams and equations specifying minimum dimensions. Notes provide additional context on stock lengths, maximum mandrel sizes for bending, and limitations of length equations for shapes with acute bend angles.

All other shapes where standard shapes cannot be used. No other shape code number, form of designation or abbreviation shall be used in scheduling.
A dimensioned sketch shall be drawn over the dimension columns A to R. Every dimension shall be specified and the dimension that is to allow for
permissible deviations shall be indicated in parenthesis, otherwise the fabricator is free to choose which dimension shall allow for tolerance.
Coupler 99’s to be scheduled to the end of the rebar, excluding any coupler type. See Fig 1. Coupler 99’s may be scheduled to the end of the coupler
when coupler type is known. To be calculated. See Note 4.

Notes
Note 1 Stock lengths are available in a limited number of lengths (e.g. 6 m, 12 m). Dimension A for shape code 01 should be regarded as indicative and
used for the purpose of calculating total length. Actual delivery lengths should be by agreement with the supplier. See also the footnote to Table 7.

Note 2 For shapes with straight and curved lengths (e.g. shape code 12) the largest practical mandrel size for the production of a continuous curve is 400
mm. See also Clause 10.

Note 3 The length equations for shape codes 14, 15, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 46 and 56 are approximate and where the bend angle is greater than
45° or, for shape codes 14, 29 and 56 with an acute angle where the bend angle is close to 90° or exceeds 135°, the length should be calculated
more accurately allowing for the difference between the specified overall dimensions and the true length measured along the central axis of the bar.

Note 4 Five bends or more might be impractical within permitted tolerances, unless agreed with the fabricator.

Notes
Note 1 An allowable deviation of 1d has been used for spring back. Thus, the q dimension is calculated as 3d + 2r rounded up to the next whole 5 mm
increment. For bars with a nominal size of 50 mm, it is not possible to bend a hook using a standard mandrel.

Note 2 End legs and bobs, and links where the bend is greater or equal to 150° and the straight length is a minimum of 5d or 90 mm,
whichever is the greater.

Note 3 Links where end bends are less than 150° and the straight length is a minimum of 10d or 90 mm, whichever is the greater.

A)
The minimum end projection for smaller bars is governed by the practicalities of bending bars.
