DUTIES OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICERS

CONVEYANCE INSPECTION)
a) Sanitary inspection onboard
 Ships
 Aircrafts
 Cross-boundary vehicles
NB: Inspections are designed to confirm that conveyances are operating in
accordance with appropriate practices for assessment & control of health
risks onboard.
PORT SANITATION
a) Regular Inspection of sanitary facilities used by port users to ensure
that they are maintained in sanitary conditions and kept free from
sources of infection at the airport.
b) Supervise and monitor the contractors assigned for port sanitation
NB: Cleaning, collection and safe disposal of refuse as well as other
waste management duties have been contracted to waste management
companies at most Point of Entries (PoEs)
c) Regular inspection of sanitary sites
d) Daily inspection of the ports to ensure that all the port environs are
sanitary clean and free from vectors and contaminants.
FOOD HYGIENE
a) Conduct regular inspection of all eating premises (restaurants and
other food vending premises).
b) Enforce and ensure regular cleaning of work / food premises
c) Inspection and sampling of food items.
d) Ensure regular medical screening of all food operators and handlers at
the ports to ascertain their fitness to handle food for public
consumption.
e) Ensure periodical renewal of food vendors certificates
f) Inspect and certify the wholesomeness of all food items entering or
leaving the country.
g) Ensure food handlers observe personal hygiene
h) Ensure the use of appropriate PPEs by food handlers
i) Inspection of canned foods
j) Destruction of unwholesome food items
k) Enforcement of the laws
VECTOR CONTROL
a) Supervise all vector / pest control measures (De ratting, disinfection,
fumigation on baggage, containers, cargo and port premises).
b) Inspection and monitoring of baggage, cargo, containers, goods and
human remains disembarking or entering the port to ensure that they
are free from sources of infection or contamination, including vectors
and reservoirs of Public Health importance.
DISEASE SURVEILLANCE /CONTROL
a) Conduct entry and exit screening for arriving and departing travellers.
b) Inspection and ensuring proper documentation of General Declaration
of Health on aircraft making sure that all health conditions on board
the conveyance are handled safely and properly.
c) Recording all disease conditions entering and exiting the country.
Report all suspected health risk entering the country to the National
focal point (the Disease Surveillance Department of the Ghana Health
Service).
d) Inspection of traveller’s certificate of vaccination at the entry and exit
points.
e) Inspection of all human remains and their causes of death certificates
to prevent the entry and exit of infectious diseases.
f) Verification of COVID-19 lab results (PanaBIOS)
g) Verification of Health Declaration Forms (HDF)
