INFORMATION
GENERAL
SUBJECT: “USING HANDSET” APPEARS AFTER FAX COMPLETION
SYMPTOM:
On the B130 and B168 fax units, with some PBX’s, the “Using handset” message remains on the display
after fax reception has completed.
CAUSE:
Using the machine’s default settings, it checks to see if the line voltage drops at 200 ms. Based upon a
combination of some PBX specifications and software default settings, some PBX’s cannot bring the line
voltage back to the “On-hook” condition within 200 ms.
NOTE: When the handset is taken off the hook, the line voltage drops. The machine checks at 200 ms to
see if the line voltage drops. If the machine detects the drop, it changes to the “Off hook”
condition. When the operator puts the handset back on hook, the machine checks at 200 ms to
see if the line voltage increases. However, some PBX’s cannot increase the line voltage within
200 ms. In these cases, the machine stays in the “Off hook” condition.
SOLUTIONS:
A. Change the “Handset off-hook detection time” from 200 ms to 800 ms:
Set Fax SP 2-101-001 RAM address 00680582(H), bit 0 to a value of 1.
(RAM address value = from 00 to 01).
This increases the time that the machine checks for the line voltage drop.

B. If “STEP A” does not work, change the “Handset on-hook detection time” from 200 ms to 800
ms:
Set Fax SP 2-101-001 RAM address 00680582(H), bit 2 to a value of 1.
NOTE: The RAM address value changes from 00 to 04 when you do only B, or change Fax SP 2-
101-001 RAM address 00680582 (H) from 00 to 05 when you do both A and B. (Changing
both the Handset off-hook detection time and Handset on-hook detection time to 800 ms.)
This increases the time that the machine checks for the line voltage increase.
IMPORTANT: This might not be effective, depending on the PBX specifications. If the problem
continues to occur, do the following.
