Bronze Check Valves
Cast Iron Check Valves are not included in the scope of this Standard.
GENERALIAPPLICATION
Check Valves shall be used for the prevention of flow reversal of hydrocarbon, general
process and utilities .
Swing Check Valves can be used for horizontal or vertical upward flow on low
velocity or high viscous fluids. A balance weight or dashpot should be specified when
installed in a system having frequent flow reversal or pulsating flow.
TERMINOLOGY
A certificate listing the valve identification, pressure tests, test limits and duration, the
standard which governs the testing procedure, acceptance criteria, and the actual
result of testing, i.e. leakage rate etc.
DOC NO. KOC-MP-015 1 Page 5 of 2 3 1 REV. 1
The term "no visible leakage" applied to a hydrostatic test liquid is defined as a leak
rate which will produce no visible weeping or formation of drops at the test pressure
and for the duration of test.
The term "no visible leakage" applied to a pneumatic test fluidlgas is defined as a leak
rate which will produce no bubbles breaking the surface of the water in which the
valve is immersed or no continuous formation of bubbles if the valve is coated with
a leak detection fluid at the test pressure and for the duration of test.
Parts whose failure will result in a leak across the valve seat or to the atmosphere.
These will normally include body, bonnetlcover, stem, stem packing, disc, and bolts
(as applicable).
3.5 Abbreviations:
4.1 Check Valves shall be manufactured and supplied in accordance with the latest
edition of the codes including addenda, with additions and modifications as indicated
in this Standard. Nothing in this Standard shall be construed as waiving any
mandatory requirement of the referenced codes.
4.2 In the event of conflict between this Standard and the codes referenced herein, the
most stringent requirement shall apply, unless otherwise specified. Any exceptions or
deviations from this Standard, along with their merits &justification, shall be brought
t o the attention of KOC's Controlling Department for their review, consideration and
amendment by Standards Division (if required).

Material specification of the main parts of Check Valves shall be as per clauses 6.5,
6.6, 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 6.10, 6.1 1, or 6.12 of this Standard. Soft seal material shall not
be used.
For sour service, NACE standard MR0175 shall apply and manufacturer shall comply
with the fabrication, heat treatment and hardness requirements stated therein for all
wetted components.
Body studlnuts shall be ASTM A 193 Gr. B7M IA 194 Gr. 2HM.
Carbon content of all pressure retaining components for carbon steel involved in
welding operations shall be restricted as follows:
(i) C = 0.25%maximum
(ii) Carbon equivalent = C +Mn16 1; 0.41 %
For alloy steel and stainless steel, carbon content shall be limited to ensure
weldability.
lnconel springs shall be used for Check Valves having internal springs.

Renewable seat rings, shall be furnished. Integral seats are acceptable in valve
sizes up to 1% " and for all Bronze valves and austenitic stainless steel valves
5 6". For swing Check Valve body seat ring shall be inclined or the hinge shall
have an offset.
The area of the flow passage shall be at least equal to the seat port area. The
body end ports shall be circular and shall not be less than as specified in
Annex-A of ASME B16.34 for the inside diameter of a flanged fitting.
The gasket contact surface on all raised face flanges shall have a machine
finish in the range 3.2 to 5.1 micrometers (125 to 200 microinch) ASME
946.1. When valves are purchased directly from a vendor's stock, or for soft
gaskets, raised face flange finish per ASME 916.5, paragraph 6.4.4.1 is
acceptable.
The disc shall be renewable and have either a spherical, ball type or plug type
seating surface. The disc shall be loosely attached to the stem.
The disc shall be threaded to receive the disc nut which retains the disc on the
stem. The disc nut shall be securely locked in position.
When a damping device is specified its design shall require prior approval of
KOC.
Material test certificates for all criticallmaior com~onents(ie. body, cover, disc,
trim, seat rings, gland, studslnuts, gasket, etc.) of the valve shall be furnished
by the manufacturer. Valves required for sour service shall have hardness test
as per NACE MR0175.
8.2.2 Bronze Check Valves shall be tested as per BS 5 154lMSS-SP-80 and PTR shall
be furnished by the manufacturer.
8.2.3 All test gauges, including recording charts if applicable, used on pressure tests
shall be calibrated before use. Test gauges shall have a range such that the test
pressure is within 30 to 7 0 percent of the full range.

The manufacturer shall operate a quality system which ensure that the
requirements of this Standard are achieved. The quality system shall preferably
be based on I S 0 9000 series and certificate shall be furnished. Certification
shall be done by internationally reputed inspection agencies. Verification of the
Vendor's quality system is normally part of the pre-qualification procedure, and
is therefore not detailed in the core text of this standard.
