SCOPE

This Standard defines the minimum requirements for design, manufacture,

procurement, inspection and testing of Steel Check Valves of ratings up to ANSI Class
2500 and all services (process & utilities) required for KOC's applications.
Requirements of Bronze Check Valves up to Class 300 are also covered.

Bronze Check Valves

Cast Iron Check Valves are not included in the scope of this Standard.

GENERALIAPPLICATION

Check Valves shall be used for the prevention of flow reversal of hydrocarbon, general
process and utilities .

Swing Check Valves can be used for horizontal or vertical upward flow on low
velocity or high viscous fluids. A balance weight or dashpot should be specified when
installed in a system having frequent flow reversal or pulsating flow.

TERMINOLOGY

Pressure Test Report (PTR)

A certificate listing the valve identification, pressure tests, test limits and duration, the
standard which governs the testing procedure, acceptance criteria, and the actual
result of testing, i.e. leakage rate etc.
DOC NO. KOC-MP-015 1 Page 5 of 2 3 1 REV. 1

3.2 ' Valve Seat Leakage

Seat leakage is defined as steady continuous appearance of drops or bubbles after

equilibrium conditions have been reached at a rate exceeding 1 mllh for each inch of
nominal valve size. Drops or bubbles may be counted in which case 1 ml shall be
equivalent to 1 6 drops or bubbles.

3.3 No Visible Leakage

The term "no visible leakage" applied to a hydrostatic test liquid is defined as a leak
rate which will produce no visible weeping or formation of drops at the test pressure
and for the duration of test.

The term "no visible leakage" applied to a pneumatic test fluidlgas is defined as a leak
rate which will produce no bubbles breaking the surface of the water in which the
valve is immersed or no continuous formation of bubbles if the valve is coated with
a leak detection fluid at the test pressure and for the duration of test.

3.4 Pressure Retaining Components

Parts whose failure will result in a leak across the valve seat or to the atmosphere.
These will normally include body, bonnetlcover, stem, stem packing, disc, and bolts
(as applicable).

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION

The environment of Kuwait is severe on all equipment and must be considered

carefully before procurement of plant and equipment. It must be assumed that, unless
otherwise specified, equipment may be subjected to sand and fine particle dust
storms, sand laden winds, airborne chemical contaminants and extreme temperatures. .

KOC Standard for Basic Design Data, KOC-G-007, provides the detailed design
information regarding the environmental, site and utility supply conditions prevailing
throughout the KOC facilities.

MATERIAL

Material specification of the main parts of Check Valves shall be as per clauses 6.5,
6.6, 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 6.10, 6.1 1, or 6.12 of this Standard. Soft seal material shall not
be used.

The use of asbestos in any form is prohibited.

For sour service, NACE standard MR0175 shall apply and manufacturer shall comply
with the fabrication, heat treatment and hardness requirements stated therein for all
wetted components.
Body studlnuts shall be ASTM A 193 Gr. B7M IA 194 Gr. 2HM.

Carbon content of all pressure retaining components for carbon steel involved in
welding operations shall be restricted as follows:

(i) C = 0.25%maximum
(ii) Carbon equivalent = C +Mn16 1; 0.41 %

Where C = Carbon, Mn = Manganese

For alloy steel and stainless steel, carbon content shall be limited to ensure
weldability.

lnconel springs shall be used for Check Valves having internal springs.

contents tally with the packing list. This is not required i n the event of
containers being used in lieu of cases.

8.4 NDE of steel Check Valve bodv castinns :

8.4.1 All castings shall be visually inspected in accordance with MSS-SP-55. A
