This application note compares the features and interfaces supported on the NVIDIA® Jetson™
Orin NX series and Jetson Xavier NX series modules. This application note also describes the
migration path for designers familiar with Jetson Xavier NX series to design a carrier board for
the Jetson Orin NX series that will support the features available on Jetson Orin NX series.
Notes:
• References to Jetson Orin NX applies to Jetson Orin NX 16GB and Jetson Orin NX 8GB except
where explicitly noted.
• References to Jetson Xavier NX applies to Jetson Xavier NX and Jetson Xavier NX 16GB except
where explicitly noted.
Jetson Orin NX series and Jetson Xavier NX series are largely pin compatible. This section
describes the differences between the modules.
The following figures show the Jetson Orin NX series and Jetson Xavier NX series block
diagrams. The interfaces or blocks that are supported only by one of the modules is
highlighted in red. The interface types that are supported on both modules but where the
number of lanes and instances, voltage level, or access is different are highlighted in
magenta.

Module Power
The following table lists the module power requirement for both the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX
and the Jetson Orin NX modules.
Mechanical Differences
Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX have the same X/Y dimensions as can be seen in Table 4.
There are four holes in the PCB for screws to pass through the thermal solution and the
module to a metal bracket below the module. The thermal solution contacts the SoC (with
thermal material placed between). The locations of the four holes are different for each
module.
Interface Migration
The following tables show the functional pin-mapping options for the NVDIA Jetson Xavier NX
and the Jetson Orin NX and how they align and differ.
Ethernet
Both Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX have on-module Ethernet PHYs and support an MDI
Gigabit Ethernet interface at the module pins.
CSI
Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX both support MIPI CSI (DPHY only). The following
configurations can be supported by each module to cameras or serializers:
Jetson Orin NX supports 8 lanes total.
2 x4
1 x4 + 2 x2
4 x2
Jetson Xavier NX supports 14 lanes.
3 x4 + 1 x2
2 x4 + 3 x2
1 x4 + 5 x2
6 x2
Audio
Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX both support two I2S interfaces. In addition, both support
a master audio clock, Digital Microphone (DMIC), and Digital Speaker (DSPK) interfaces.
I2C
Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX both support multiple I2C interfaces as shown in the
following table.
SPI
Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX have multiple SPI interfaces as shown in the following
table.
UART
Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX both support multiple UART interfaces.
Debug
Jetson Orin NX and Jetson Xavier NX do not bring JTAG to the module pins. Both support a
debug UART.
The following table lists the pins that have different functionality between Jetson Orin NX and
Jetson Xavier NX.
