PHY 103 (Introductory Optics, Waves and Sound)

Course Outline and Schedule

• Elements of Geometric Optics- reflection and the ray model of light, image formation in plane and
spherical mirrors, refraction at a boundary, image formation by lenses, defects of lenses and
correction, optical instruments.
• Vibrations and Waves- vibrations, properties of a wave: propagation, interference, diffraction,
polarization. Wave motion: transverse and longitudinal, forced vibrations, resonance, beats.
• Sound- The nature of a sound wave, properties of sound waves, motion at supersonic speeds,
intensity of sound, resonance and standing waves, frequency response of the ear, high fidelity,
physics of musical instruments. Ultrasonic, simple harmonic motion. Modern Physics: photoelectric
effects, spectroscopy and atomic physics, continuous and line emission, absorption spectra, x-rays.
Wave mechanics: qualitative treatment of the wave particle duality. The atomic nucleus and
radioactivity.

Grades The final grade is calculated on an absolute scale. There are 100 points possible
for this course of which 30 points are for continuous assessments and 70 points
for the final examination.
