Expressions

1) Ask someone to do a certain activity together:

（いっしょに）　<V-ます form stem> ませんか。 (Why don’t we…?)

　　 <V-ます form stem> ましょう。 (Let’s …)

映画（えいが）を見ます　→　いっしょに映画を見ませんか。
Why don’t we watch a film together?
博物館（はくぶつかん）へ行きます　
→　いっしょに博物館へ行きませんか。
　Why don’t we go to a museum together?
漢字（かんじ）を勉強します　→　いっしょに漢字を勉強しませんか。
　Why don’t we study Kanji together?

@ <V>ませんか is more giving/gentle invitation as it shows that the

speaker is prepared to accept “no” as an answer, while <V>ましょう is NOT
and strongly expected to have “yes” from the listener.

あ、もう 5 時半ですね。ちょっと休みましょう。
Oh, it is already 5:30, isn’t it? Let’s have a bit of a break.

2) Accept/Decline the invitation/offer appropriately and politely:

<accept>　　はい／ええ、<V>ましょう。 (Yes, let’s <V>.)

　　　はい／ええ、ぜひ。 　(Yes, definitely.)
　　　はい／ええ、よろこんで。　(Yes, with pleasure.)
　　　あ、いいですね。 　(Ah, sounds good.)
　　　あ、ありがとうございます。 (Ah, Thank you very much.)

<decline>　 ああ、ざんねんですが、つごうが わるいです。

(Oh, I am sorry, but it is inconvenient for me.)
ああ、すみません、<N>は ちょっと…… 。
(Oh, I am sorry, <N> is a bit…… .)

<N> above represents something is not convenient/good for the speaker,

such as day/date/time/event itself.

@ In both cases, make sure you mean what you actually say in order to get
your message across.

3) State/suggest/check the detail of the activity:

<day of the week>　　　　（　　　　　　　）<V>ましょうか。
<date/general “when”> 　 （　　　　　　／　　）<V>ましょうか。
<time> 　　　（　　　　　）<V>ましょうか。
<venue/meeting place>　 （　　　　　）<V>／あいましょうか。
<transport> （　　　　）行きましょうか。／行きますか。
<”How about…?”>　 　　<N>は どうですか。／いかがですか。

* As above, <V>ましょう（か） pattern can be used for both simple & wh-
Q&A. However, <V>ませんか CANNOT be used with wh-words.

<TASK> Talk to your teacher and ask to do a certain activity together.

<TASK 2> Study the dialogue below:

A:　来週の土曜日、いっしょに北山（きたやま）へドライブ
　　に行きませんか。

B:　あ、いいですね。行きましょう。何時に会いましょうか。

A:　10 時に私のうちで会いませんか。

B;　ああ、10 時ですか……。10 時はちょっと……。11 時はどうですか。

A:　いいですよ。じゃあ、11 時に会いましょうか。

B:　ええ、11 時ですね。わかりました。

A:　じゃあ、来週の 土曜日の 11 時に 。

B:　楽（たの）しみに しています。

1) Identify what was agreed, such as activity, time and venue etc..

2) Underline what you can change in order to create a new

contents/dialogue without changing the structure of it.

3) Have a conversation with your teacher using the above as a template.
