DEFINITION

An analogy is a comparison

between
two things by showing a specific
relationship between paired words.

THE PURPOSE
Writing analogies is to deepen the
reader’s understanding to the
objectives of relationships or
comparisons.
Analogies are used to show how two
things are similar but also highlight
how they are different.
How to Spot Analogy:
An analogy takes this form: A : B :: C : D
Looking for telltale phrases like: “is to”/”are to”
Can be read as: A is to B as C is to D

Example: foot : person :: wheel : car or foot is to person as wheel is to car

A foot is a part of a person, just as a wheel is part of a car.
