The charity began in 2009 as a small Bangkok based initiative called In

word meaning fun/enjoyment. They chose that name because they

The charity we are supporting for the July 2017 Better You Bundles

As little as $100 a month can get an entire family off the streets in

I’ve had a several opportunities to visit and volunteer with the

all administrative fees are raised internally through fundraisers and

Rob Cubbon You Are Your Thoughts
When I was in my early thirties I was living and working in London.
RobCubbon.com Although I was able to support myself and I had many friends, I was
unhappy.

Through complete chance I got interested in personal development.

After reading a few books on NLP, positive thinking, Buddism, non-

Suddenly, I had the belief that my life could improve by my own efforts

Bio and my own efforts alone. This contrasted with my old belief – that a

what I want. I realised I could improve my mood by elevating my thoughts. I started
to identify the first thoughts that would lead to a downward spiral of
negative self-talk, and stopped myself as quickly as I could.

Also, at the same time I started meditating. A few days later I stopped
a smoking pack of cigarettes a day. This was a habit I’d had since the
age of 18.

I still meditate every day.

Derek Franklin Daily Success Routine
My #1 personal development strategy is to design and
DerekFranklin.com CONSISTENTLY practice a daily success routine, or what some would
call a morning routine.

For me, a daily success routine is 30-60 minutes that I set aside EVERY
morning to think about, feel, express, and connect with ideas, beliefs,
and goals that matter to me and that I want to heavily influence my
thinking and emotions.

Bio I’ve found that there are some incredible benefits to regularly
practicing a daily success routine.

• What am I grateful for?

something I recently learned and how I intend to use it, a belief I hold
and why I believe it to be true, as well as specific small habits I intend
to practice in order to become who I want to become

There are some additional elements, but that’s the basic idea.

As you’ll notice, I’m a BIG believer in EXPRESSING OUT LOUD (or

saying them in a normal talking voice) things that matter - even over
writing them down. This is because our words have incredible power
to transform our thinking and emotions (which is the whole point of
practicing a daily success routine).

Expressing your thoughts out loud is not only an effective way to bring
clarity to your thinking, but I’ve found it to be an instant trigger to
spark strong emotions (think about the difference between writing
down the words of a song as opposed to singing them out loud and
you’ll know what I mean).

James McCrae What’s Your Daily Practice
The most important personal development tip I can share is having a
ShitYourEgoSays.com daily practice of some kind. The good news? There is no wrong way
to have a daily practice. We get to play around with different rituals
– meditation, yoga, journaling, dance, plant medicine, nutrition – and
even create our own. It’s like the world is full of music samples and we
can remix them together to make our own song.

There is nothing dogmatic about personal practice. The only thing that

I remember performing ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ in Newcastle after
an extremely successful run in Stratford-Upon-Avon. It was absolutely
fantastic in Stratford as we had an audience full of wildly enthusiastic
teenagers but then when we got to Newcastle, we gave the same
performance and the audience reaction was muted. What we had
failed to do was adapt to the more discerning, serious audience and
the play bombed on the first preview in Newcastle.

However, we learnt our lesson and had adapted by the press night a
few days later. Never underestimate the role of the audience in your
performance.

Above all – try to remember that no one can see what is happening
inside and so very few people will be able to detect that you are
nervous. Try to let any anxiety wash over you and get the first line
out. Once you have done this, you will be flying high! I had to perform
Hermia in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in front of an audience of
3000 people. We were performing it with an orchestra who were
playing an overture for 15 minutes whilst we, the cast members, sat
amongst them. I have never been so nervous in my whole entire life.
My palms were sweating, my breathing was all over the place and my
thoughts were racing. The one thing that saved me was saying my first
line to myself over and over again. Then I had to spring up on to a chair
and say my first line. It was like an out of body experience but once I
had managed to get the first line out – the rest just followed.

Giles Johnston A Simple Approach to Get Results and Reclaim
Smartspeed.co.uk Your Life!
Many years ago I worked as a Production Manager, running a factory
that was always late with its orders. Customers would harass me
constantly throughout my long working day and I spent a good chunk
of this part of my career lying to customers, underperforming and
feeling burnt out. I didn’t feel great and the results weren’t reflective
of what I thought I could achieve professionally.

One day, when I decided that I didn’t want this ‘blip’ to be part of my

that I could get things back under control.

The performance of the business soared in many ways during the next
four months, including:

• The factory’s on time delivery rate leaped from 22% to 98%.

• The factory’s lead time dropped from 20 weeks to 3.5 weeks.

And, our sales increased from £10M to £30M in a two year

period (with no extra staff or overtime) on the back of these small
improvements. You can imagine that our profit levels really improved

But, for me:

• I got to spend more of my time doing the fun things with my team

• I had more time for my hobbies and family life (as I wasn’t spending

Chris Johnstone The Boat and Water Level
Over thirty years ago, when I was a medical student in London, I went
CollegeofWellBeing.com to a talk by holistic medicine pioneer Professor Patrick Pietroni. He
taught me about a picture that has become one of my most valued
resilience tools. Being well and healthy, he said, is a bit like rowing a
boat. Illness, or other kinds of problems, can thought of as crashing
into a rock.

Bio
Dr Chris Johnstone is one of the UK’s leading resilience trainers, with
over 30 years experience in this field. He graduated in medicine with

When I teach resilience, I use this boat and water level metaphor as a
mapping tool. I ask people to draw a horizontal line to represent their
water level of resilience, and then put in downward arrows for factors
that lower this, and upward arrows for those that strengthen it.

BetterYou.BundlesforGood.com 19 Change Your Life!

A sentence starter I use to help people identify downward arrows is
‘When I face a difficult situation, I’m more likely to struggle when…’
For example, I’m more likely to struggle when I haven’t been sleeping
well, when my diet is poor, and when I’m already overloaded or
stressed.

The other side of this is the upward arrow sentence that starts “I tend
to cope better when…”. This invites our identification of resilience
factors such as support from friends, feeling determined and having a
well-developed toolkit of strategies.

When I’m feeling challenged or overwhelmed, I say to myself “Chris,

how’s my water level doing?”. This reminds me to pay attention to the
little steps I can take to nourish my capacity to face whatever’s there.
That includes things like self-compassion, taking renewal pauses,
sometimes saying no and othertimes finding a stronger yes.

As controversial as this might be---I found that emigrating from the US

has resulted in a vast reduction of stress. We must remember that the
experience of stress is not always within the individual---it can also be
the result of a toxic environment---whether it is the result of political
or economic stressors, or whether it is due to pollution or habitat
destruction (like Fukushima or deforestation of the Amazon). These
factors result in a dramatic impact of the wellness of the people living
in these environments. So stressful environment isn’t always under the

Once I have each task categorized I do my best to ditch anything that’s
stressful and optional right away (ex. lunch with a negative co-worker,
volunteering for projects you don’t find meaningful/enjoyable, etc.)

meditation, time with friends, taking an interesting class, etc.)

Transformation: When I realized that about 20-25% of my weekly

activity was actually NOT mandatory and definitely stressful, I
started saying “No” to those things and began to find time to practice
meditation, play with my son, and start my own business (which I later
transitioned to as my FT career).

As a daily practice, I make sure to sit outside every morning with my

How does it work?
Well, I think it’s a combination of driving in the right direction, like
setting a mental satnav which guides you each time you come to
a decision point, and also driving faster since you are more self
disciplined and more assertive if you have a destination - if it doesn’t
contribute to my goals then I am more likely to say no to it.

Both of these, the direction and the speed, are only subtle
improvements but they are enough to add up over time and make a big
difference to where you end up.

So - please do write a list today, and it should cover the things you
want to achieve both at home and work, and also the things you enjoy
doing, which you would like to do more to, at home and at work. Aim
high, put in as much detail as you can (e.g. not just “to travel” but where
to, exactly?) and put it on the wall where you will see it every day.

The in-timer’s skill is at being fully present and focused on what
they’re doing. Their downside is that it’s hard to extract themselves
and forward plan. It can be done - I’m one, but I can never completely
relax on it. Punctuality doesn’t come naturally to me. (I reward myself
for good behavior now and then by reverting to type when it doesn’t
matter!)

The through-timer’s strength is their ability to detach, keep focused

on the ‘main’ thing, to be aware of the passage of time and its
consequences. On the other hand, this same skill can cause them to be
seen as abrupt and distant. They have to work harder to ensure that
they’re not perceived as disinterested.

Solutions for the In-Timers (who are the ones perceived as having time
‘issues’):

1. Get ready first. Prepare everything you need for the day, either
at the beginning of the day or even the night before. Then set an alert
on your phone to remind you when you need to pack up and depart.
Give yourself 10 minutes longer than you think you’ll need, and don’t
ignore the alert. You’ll be delighted with how much less stress you
experience. No more frenetic last-minute rushing around: you get
places on time!

2. Don’t do that one last thing. As soon as you find yourself

tempted to squeeze in just one more task before you leave, you can
guarantee you’ll be late. Don’t do it!

As I woke one morning I was surprisingly consumed by an intense fear but

directed me to thoughts of self trust and faith. My reliance on any form of
external belief or guidance fell away instantly.

When you let go of all your beliefs, and enhance a deep faith and trust in

better and I did improve. My new job came with more work and stress,
but I got the job. My new manager liked me and my work environment
became so much better. I was really grateful for the change.

Of course, after a while this wasn’t enough, I aimed for more freedom,

ideal at all.

So, I adjusted my affirmations accordingly. One day my manager

called us into the office and told us that the office in London won’t be
available anymore and we would need to go back to our main office
which is exactly on the opposite side of London. Instead of 4 hours a
day it would be 6, just the commuting to spend 9 hours at work.

I was devastated. I blamed the affirmations, I asked for more freedom

but not so much freedom that I lose my job. I kept adjusting my
affirmations and in a couple of days it just hit me: I could easily work
from home. So I took a deep breath, I repeated my mantra over and
over again: “Everything turns out in my best interest!”, and I asked to
work from home and they said yes! But only to me! My other colleague
apparently wasn’t trustworthy, so he quit.

So, I ended up with extra time for myself, I was able to spend my
morning – instead of commuting – in the gym, I had time to cook fresh
meals for lunch and even had more time for self-exploration and
soul-searching. I wrote the book (included in the Better You Bundle)
