CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Situation Analysis

Ronald Allan Kelley Poe (August 20, 1939 – December 14, 2004), known

professionally as Fernando Poe Jr., and often referred to by his initials FPJ, was a Filipino

actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, and politician. His long and successful career

as an action star earned him the nickname "Da King" (i.e. the "King of Philippine movies").

Rutsch (2021)

Ronald Allan K. Poe was the son of Filipino actor Fernando Poe Sr. (Allan

Fernando Poe y Reyes), a native from San Carlos, Pangasinan and Elizabeth "Bessie"

Kelley, a Filipino-American. He was born in Manila. His parents were not yet legally

married when he was born on August 20, 1939, although his parents were later married in

1940. His political opponents tried to derail his bid for the 2004 Philippine presidency

when they sought to disqualify him as an illegitimate son of a non-Filipino mother. He was

the second among six siblings and it was his brother Andy (Fernando II) who was really

named Fernando Poe Jr. which Ronald later adopted, to bank on the popularity of his father

who was a top actor in his time. Conrad Poe, a Filipino actor is Ronald Poes' half-brother,

the illegitimate son of Fernando Poe Sr. and actress Patricia Mijares. Estrella (2016)

This research/study aimed to know the story of Fernando Poe Jr. on how he became

Da King of Philippine Movies and national artist so that it can give the people more

knowledge about him. Knowing the story of Fernando Poe Jr. will inspire the youth to

1
enrich their career. With enough knowledge, people can appreciate this national artist, and

his story will never be forgotten even for the next generations.

This research is based on the article of Bardinas (2020) in FPJ Throwback:

Surprising things you may not know.about the King of Philippine movies where he stated

Ever since it was launched in 1972, “The Order of National Artist” Award was already

conferred to over a hundred of Filipino artists who excelled in the fields of literature, visual

arts, sculpture, music, dance, broadcast, and cinema, including FPJ. He was the fifth to be

declared as National Artist for Cinema, joining fellow decorated and acclaimed filmmakers

Gerard “Gerry” de Leon (1982), Lino Brocka (1997), Ishmael Bernal (2001), and Eddie S.

Romero (2003). His family received the posthumous recognition in 2012 after former

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III approved and signed Proclamation 435 that

confirmed his declaration. On the other hand, Valenzuela (2018) believed that Even though

his father, Fernando Poe Sr., was a producer and actor, FPJ first started in the entertainment

industry as a messenger boy, bit player, and stuntman. At the early age of 12, FPJ had to

drop out of school and began his career in showbiz. He had to work so as to support his

family because his father had died. His first starring role was in a sequel, Anak ni Palaris,

which he was released when he was just 16 years old.

The Review of Literature

This section will present related literature and studies about the King of Philippine

Movies.

FPJ–Da King

Dooc (2020) stated that Ronald Alan Kelley Poe had many names—FPJ, Ronwaldo

Reyes, Ronnie and Ang Panday—but there was no mistaking to his avid fans that there was

only one of his kind in the movie world. During his Lo’ Waist Gang movies in the 1950s,

he was I think called Nanding by his gang mates like Zaldy Zhornack, Berting Labra,

Corazon Rivas, Boy Sta. Romana, Boy Francisco, Butch Bautista and others, but it did not

stick because the name Fernando which he appropriated to capitalize on his late father’s

popularity actually belonged to his younger brother Andy Poe. Behind the camera, his

fellow actors referred to him as Ronnie, the official nickname given to him by his family.

However, to his legions of fans, he was simply regarded as “Da King”—the undisputed

king of Philippine movies during his time. And it was a long reign which saw his male fans

discarded their low waist pants to high waist, closeted their tightly fit trousers in favor of

bell bottoms, and gave up their corduroy for denims. The fashion fads had changed but his

5
ardent followers remained. Only FPJ remained in the imagination of the moviegoers, with

the possible exception of Zaldy. The rest of the gang banished from the movie firmament

after the Lo’ Waist Gang movies ran out of sequels and the low-waist pants ran out of

fashion.

He was an actor, director, writer, and producer. He produced and directed the

movie, Ang Padrino in 1984, which hauled the awards in the FAMAS that year—Best

Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture. He received the Order of National Artist of

the Philippines for Film posthumously on May 23, 2006 by former President Gloria M.

Arroyo, but his family did not receive this. However, President Benigno Aquino III

confirmed it during his presidency and the award was presented to his family on August

16, 2012. He was a FAMAS Hall of Famer after having won several acting and directorial

awards from FAMAS. He first won the Best Actor Award trophy for his role in Mga

Alabok sa Lupa in 1968. This was followed by his portrayal as leading actor in Asedillo in

1971, Durugin si Totoy Bato in 1979, Umpisahan Mo, Tatapusin Ko in 1983 and Muslim

.357 in 1986. FAMAS also recognized him as Best Director a couple of times.

FPJ affirmed as national artist

Porcalla (2012) stated that President Aquino has approved and signed Proclamation

435 affirming a previous proclamation of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

declaring the late movie icon Fernando Poe Jr. a National Artist, posthumously. “It’s

essentially confirming the previous proclamation that was issued. As we all know, for

personal reasons or for reasons of their own, the family was not able to accept the award

previously,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said yesterday. Poe, Ronald

6
Allan Poe in real life, was officially defeated by Arroyo in the May 2004 presidential

elections. He died in December of the same year. His family did not attend the formal

conferment of the award in May 2006. His wife, veteran actress Susan Roces, accused

Arroyo of rigging the votes in her favor. When he assumed office in June 2010, Aquino

appointed Poe’s daughter, Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares, as head of the Movie and

Television Review and Classification Board. Binay, meanwhile, expressed gratitude to the

President for issuing a new proclamation declaring Poe a National Artist. The National

Artist award is the most fitting recognition of a man who embodied the hopes and

aspirations of the masses, Binay said.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This research will use or serve primarily as a procedure or process to know the

Story behind of Da King of Philippine Movies. In particular, this study aimed to tell the

story of Fernando Poe Jr.. The main tool that used for data collection to support the

information gathered by the researchers through searching.

Through searching online. The data for this study will be collected through an

online searching of information conducted by the researchers base on the study.

Sources of Data

The researchers decided to use secondary data from online articles and literatures

about Fernando Poe Jr.. Wagh (2020) as stated that secondary data refers to using existing

data generated by large government Institutions, healthcare facilities etc. as part of

organizational record keeping. The data is then extracted from more varied datafiles.

Therefore, secondary data is the best source of data for this study.

Instrumentation and Data Collection:

The researcher used the descriptive research method case study for this study. A

case study is a sample group (an individual, a group of people, organizations, events, etc.)

whose characteristics are used to describe the characteristics of a larger group in which the

8
case study is a subgroup. The information gathered from investigating a case study may be

generalized to serve the larger group.

This generalization, may, however, be risky because case studies are not sufficient

to make accurate predictions about larger groups. Case studies are a poor case of

generalization.

Analysis of Data

After the collecting of data, these will be analyzed for each question that given in

the SOP. Researches will thoroughly describe and analyze each of data. Based on the data

that researchers have collected, Fernando Poe Jr. became different to other actors in their

times. The gathered data is used to determine what they did to be a national artist and

received the title Da King of Philippine Movies.
