Introduction to Operating System

An operating system acts as an intermediary between the user of a computer and
computer hardware. The purpose of an operating system is to provide an environment in
which a user can execute programs in a convenient and efficient manner.
An operating system is a software that manages the computer hardware. The
hardware must provide appropriate mechanisms to ensure the correct operation of the
computer system and to prevent user programs from interfering with the proper operation
of the system.

Operating System – Definition:

 An operating system is a program that controls the execution of application programs
and acts as an interface between the user of a computer and the computer hardware.
 A more common definition is that the operating system is the one program running at
all times on the computer (usually called the kernel), with all else being application
programs.
 An operating system is concerned with the allocation of resources and services, such
as memory, processors, devices, and information. The operating system
correspondingly includes programs to manage these resources, such as a traffic
controller, a scheduler, memory management module, I/O programs, and a file
system.

56
The Figure below shows how OS function:

INSTALL OPERATING SYSTEM

Planning the Installation

As with any OS installation, we must first plan the installation process. When you run
the Windows 7 Setup program, you must provide information about how to install and
configure the operating system. Thorough planning can make your installation of Windows 7
more efficient by helping you to avoid potential problems during installation. An
understanding of the configuration options will also help to ensure that you have properly
configured your system.

Here are some of the most important things you should take into consideration
when planning for your Windows 7 installation:

 Check System Requirements

 Check Hardware and Software Compatibility
 Determine Disk Partitioning Options
 Complete a Pre-Installation Checklist

Difference of 32-bit or 64-bit OS Version?

Basically, the 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access
memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system. So if you plan on using Windows 7 on
a computer with more than 3 GB or RAM, I would strongly suggest to use the 64-bit version.
Most programs designed for the 32-bit version of Windows will work on the 64-bit version
of Windows.

57
Step-by-Step Procedure in Installing Windows 7 Operating System

Step 1: Turn on the Computer

Step 2: Immediately press  Del ,  Esc ,  F2 ,  F10 , or  F9  when it restarts. Depending on

the make and model of your computer, pressing one of these buttons immediately after you
power on your computer will enter the system BIOS.

 Some computers tell you which button to press to enter the BIOS as the computer
starts up.

Step 3: Find your BIOS's boot

options menu. The boot options
menu of your BIOS may vary in
location or name from the
illustration, but you may
eventually find it if you search
around.

58
 If you can't find the boot options menu, search the name of your BIOS (most likely located in
the BIOS menu) online for help.

Step 4: Select the optical disk

drive as the first boot device of
your computer. Although this
method may vary among
computers, the boot options
menu is typically a menu of
movable device names where you
should set your CD, DVD or
Bootable flash drive/external
hard drive as the first boot device.
It can also be a list of devices that
you can set the order of their boot
on. Consult a manual or the
internet for help if you're stuck.

Step 5: Place the Windows 7 Installation

disc in the disc drive. Press the button on
your CD, DVD, or Blu-ray drive. Then
place the Windows 7 installation disc in
the disk tray and push it back in the
drive.

Step 6: Save the changes in the settings. Press

the button indicated on the screen or select the
save option from the BIOS menu to save your
configuration.

59
Step 7: Shut off your computer. Either turn off the
computer by choosing the shut-down option in your
current operating system, or hold the power button
until the computer powers off.

Step 8: Start your computer from the

disc. After you have placed the disc into the
disc drive, start your computer. When the
computer starts, press a key if you are asked if
you would like to boot from the disc by
pressing any key. After you choose to start
from the disc. Windows Setup will begin
loading.
 If you are not asked to boot from the disc, you
may have done something wrong. Retry the
previous steps and make sure you have
selected the correct drive in the BIOS boot menu.

Step 9: Choose your Windows Setup

options. Once Windows Setup loads, you'll be
presented with a window. Use the drop-
down menus to select your preferred
language, keyboard type, and time/currency
format, then click Next in the lower-right
corner.

60
Step 10: Click the Install Now button. It's the
blue button in the center of the screen.

Step 11: Accept the License Terms. Read over the

Microsoft Software License Terms. Then click the
checkbox next to I accept the license terms, and
click Next in the lower-right corner.

Step 12: Select the Custom installation. This option

allows you to do a clean install of Windows 7. This
will erase all your files on the installation drive.
 If you do not want to erase all your files,
select Upgrade instead. This option requires an
existing Windows installation. You can only
upgrade from one Windows edition to another.
For example, if you have Windows Vista Home
Edition, you can only upgrade to Windows 7
Home Edition. You would not be able to upgrade
to Windows 7 Premium.

Step 13: Select a hard drive and partition you

want to install Windows on. A hard drive is a
physical part of your computer that stores data,
and partitions "divide" hard drives into separate
sections. Click the hard drive or partition you
want to install Windows 7 on.

61
 If the hard drive has data on it, You'll need to use the following steps to Delete or Format
the drive. Be aware that this will permanently erase all data from the disk.
 Select the hard drive from the list of hard drives.
 Click Drive options (advanced).
 Click Delete or Format from Drive options.
 If your computer doesn't have any partitions yet, create one to install Windows on it.
 Select the hard drive from the list of hard drives.
 Click Drive options (advanced).
 Select New from Drive options.
 Select the size, and click OK.

Step 14: After completing the

installation, Windows will give you the
below screen to enter your username
and password.

Step 15: In the next step you will be asked to enter

the Product Key. Enter the key that you have got
and click the Next button.

Step 16: Here you need to select the Windows 7

update option. Click Use recommended
settings option.

62
- Select Time Zone, date and time and click Next.

- In the next screen, you need to select the type of network. That is, choose between Home
network, Work network and Public network.

Finally, the setup will ask you to create a group

depending on the type of Network you have
chosen. If you are not sure, just skip as you can do it
later as well.

12. You will see the Windows 7 desktop. That is,

you have successfully installed Windows 7 on your PC.

INSTALLING COMPUTER PERIPHERALS

A computer peripheral is any external device that provides input and output for the
computer. For example, a keyboard and mouse are input peripherals, while a monitor and
printer are output peripherals. Computer peripherals, or peripheral devices, are sometimes
called "I/O devices" because they provide input and output for the computer. Some
peripherals, such as external hard drives, provide both input and output for the computer.
Installation of Peripherals
Note: If your computer doesn’t have an opening system installed yet. You will want to stop
after you install your mouse and speaker, install your operating system, and then resume
the installation of your peripherals.
Installing the keyboard
1. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
2. Determine if the keyboard uses a PS/2 or USB connector. The PS/2 connector for
keyboard is round and typically colored purple, while the USB is flat and

rectangular in shape.

63
3. Installing the keyboard by plugging it into the chosen port.
Note: Do not install your keyboard while your computer is powered on and do not unplug
your keyboard while your computer is running.
Installing the Mouse
Installing a mouse is very similar to installing a keyboard. You will still find mice with
either USB or PS/2 connectivity, although most of the newer mice will use a USB connector,
especially if you are using a mouse for gaming. Just like the keyboard, you can also an
adapter to change a USB connection to PS/2. If you are going to have a lot of USB
peripherals, you may want to consider using adapter for your mouse and keyboard or
perhaps using a USB hub for some of your peripherals. To complete the installation simply
plug the mouse into the proper port.
Installing the Monitor
Install a monitor (also known as a “Display”) requires
1. Provide a free power outline for A/C power.
2. Identifying the connection type you will use to connect the monitor to your graphics
card
3. For the best picture quality possible, use the digital DVI port on your graphics card
and display if they are available. Most graphics card now support multiple monitors
and they typically include the adapters required to change a DVI connection to VGA
for older displays.
4. Once you have the display plugged in, simply connect it to the appropriate connector
on your video card and you are ready to go. Drivers are not typically required for
displays, but once again consult the manufacturer’s instructions for details.
Installing the Speakers
1. Determine the type of speakers you are using. Perform a simple set of 2.0 or
2.1 speakers.
2. Connect the audio cable to the “line-out” jack of your computer’s sound card,
and connect the other end(s) to the speaker unless they are already “hard-
wired”
3. Plug in the power cord.
4. If you are using a full 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, the connections get a
bit more complicated.
Installing a Webcam
Most webcams are USB-powered and simply require that you plug them in and
install their drivers. However, some cams require that the drivers be installed fist, so be sure
to read the instructions that came with your webcam to avoid any problems.
Installing the Printer
1. Make sure that you have an appropriate printer cable and, if necessary, a
separated power cable.

64
2. Turn off your PC and install the USB or parallel cable between the printer and
the PC.
3. Insert the ink cartridge or toner cartridge.
4. Plug in the printer and turn it on.
5. Reboot your PC.
6. Wait for Windows to see the new printer hardware and start the Printer
Install Wizard.
7. If you have an Installation CD, cancel the Printer Install Wizard and allow it to
auto play. Follow the instructions to install the printer driver.
8. After the printer has been installed, run a test print to verify that the printer
is working properly.

Device Drivers
Now that you have an operating system installed, you’ll need to install drivers for
your devices such as Video Cards, Network interface cards, sound cards, etc. in many cases,
if Windows recognizes the device, drivers will be installed automatically, in some cases,
generic drivers are installed before they will work fine.
Drivers are small programs that help the operating system use or “drive” the device.
Whenever a device doesn’t work properly, ask if the proper driver has been installed.

Driver Installation Example: Monitor Driver

Installing the power monitor information files is one of the small things that
purchasing a fully assembled PC.

In the Control Panel, select System to open the System Properties dialog box Then
select “Device Manager” to get a list of hardware in the PC. Finally, click “Monitor”, and
you’ll see that a generic monitor is listed.

65
Installing a Sound Card Drivers
Once the sound card installed, start the system and let the windows Plug and Play
install the sound card’s drivers. After your driver is installed, make a quick trip to Device
Manager to make sure that the driver was installed correctly. The Printer Install Wizard is
Perfectly installed.

Installing Other drivers

Proceed similarly to install drivers for your other devices, such as a sound card if you
have one. Whenever a device doesn’t seem to be working properly, ask if you’ve installed
the proper device driver or if it’s been done automatically. Looking for the device under
Device Manager in Windows is as a good way to see if the device driver is installed. As you
can see in the figure below a question mark by Ethernet Controller in Device Manager shows
that network drivers aren’t yet installed.

If your main board has built-in sound or networking, a CD that contains drivers
probably came with the main board. Place the CD into the CD Drive and let Windows search
for the appropriate driver.
Other common drivers are LAN (Local Area Network) driver, CD media driver,
expansion cards, keyboards, printers, USB devices and others.

How to Install Device Drivers

There are (4) ways to install device drivers:

1. Manufacturer’s DVD/Installer
Normally provided upon buying your computer/printer/laptop

2. Driver Pack Solution

66
Driver Pack Solution is a free driver updater tool that, with just a few clicks, finds the
proper device drivers your computer needs and then downloads and installs them for you—
no clicking through any wizards or installation prompts.

3. Device Manager (Driver Update)

Device Manager is a Control Panel
applet in Microsoft Windows operating
systems. It allows users to view and control
the hardware attached to the computer.
When a piece of hardware is not working,
the offending hardware is highlighted for
the user to deal with. The list of hardware
can be sorted by various criteria.

4. Download Online

Download means to receive data from a remote system, typically a server.
