Discipline is defined as the practice of

teaching others to obey rules or norms by

using punishment to correct unwanted
behaviours.
In a classroom, a teacher uses discipline to
ensure routing is maintained, school rules
are enforced, and the students are in a safe
learning environment.

The Ginott Model:

Addressing the Situation with Sane Messages.
• Discipline is little-by-little, step-by-step. The teacher's self-discipline is key. Model the
behavior you want in students.
• Use sane messages when correcting misbehavior. Address what the student is doing,
don't attack the student's character [personal traits]. Labeling disables.
• Use communication that is congruent with student's own feelings about the situation and
themselves.
• Invite cooperation rather than demanding it.
• Teachers should express their feelings--anger--but in sane ways. "What you are doing
makes me very angry. I need you to ...."
• Sarcasm is hazardous.
• Praise can be dangerous; praise the act, not the student and in a situation that will not turn
peers against the pupil.
• Apologies are meaningless unless it is clear that the person intends to improve.
• Teachers are at their best when they help pupils develop their self-esteem and to trust
their own experienc
The word discipline has its origins in Latin. Disco means to learn
and disciplina refers to the communication of knowledge to
the learner. Discipline that means that educators must exercise
their authority in the best interest of the learner with emphasis
on the development of self-discipline, independence and
maturity. Discipline should, at all times, be firm, consistent and
positive.
1.Ginott believed that there was only unacceptable behavior he encourages parents and
teachers to avoid using personal identification when addressing students behavior. For
example if a student is continuously talking in class it is better not to say “why are you
always talking, I told you not to talk during class.” According to Ginott it would be better to
say “I am hearing a lot of talking that is disrupting the class.” By using removing the “you”
statements and replacing them with “I” statements you can address the situation without
attacking or criticizing the student.

2. Another of Ginott’s beliefs was that it is important to attach rules to objects. according to
Ginott, children are surrounded by strict boundaries and rules. Similar to “I” statements, it is
important to talk about the object and the rule while not criticizing the child. An example
would be to say “A bed is not for jumping.” In the classroom Ginott believed that teachers
had complete power through communication to influence classroom situations, whether in a
positive or negative way.

3. In order for teacher to make a positive impact, Ginotts stated three things: (A) the teacher
must model communication that is congruent with student’s emotions and surroundings; (B)
the teacher must include cooperative learning; (C) it is important to use discipline in place of
punishment. By actively doing these three things teachers can create an environment with
“congruent communication.”

Ginott’s theories were very popular during the 1970’s and are still influential today. His
congruent communication has had a positive impact on many classrooms. He helped teachers
and parents to better communicate and work together.

The theory is classroom management in which Dr. Haim Ginott presents is one that focuses on the
student's feelings. The teacher plays a very large role in this theory. Any response a teacher gives will
create a climate or compliance or defiance

the overall classroom atmosphere should be dealt with, not individual behavior problems. To that
end, teachers should address the class personally, using "I"statement

According to Ginott, “Congruent Communication" should be used with students, which

basically means dealing with students using non-aggressive language

1. The purpose of code of conduct is to promote conducive learning environment and

conditions in the school for effective teaching and learning and hold the public
confidence upon school and in teachers whom is entrusted the physical, mental,
moral, religious and spiritual up-bringing of the young children.
2. The code of conduct provides a guideline for the disciplinary authority when it
becomes necessary to initiate disciplinary action against erring staffs.
3. It provides the comprehensive guidelines, rules and regulations for regulating the
conduct of teachers both in and outside the classroom in order to encourage, maintain
and emphasize high level of moral conduct.

Classroom management is an essential aspect of education that allows teachers to create a well-
structured learning environment that maximizes student learning.

The Ginott Model of Classroom Management focuses on addressing the situation with sane
messages. It was developed by Dr. Haim Ginott, a child psychologist, who believed that the teacher’s
language and behavior have a significant impact on the students, and should, therefore, be mindful
of what they say or do

The Ginott Model suggests that teachers should validate students’ emotions, redirect their behavior,
and provide constructive feedback instead of criticizing them. By using this approach, teachers can
foster positive relationships with their students and promote their social and emotional growth.
