“Few” and “Little” have a pessimistic connotation, whereas “a few” and “a little” have an
optimistic one.
I need to make an apple cake. There are few apples = they are not enough. (pessimistic)
There are a few apples = they are not much, but enough. (optimistic)

Can I talk to you? Well, I have little time = it is not enough for the talk. (pessimistic)
Well, I have a little time = it is not much, but enough for the talk. (optimistic)
