Observing and planning for your child across all 7 areas of learning...

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) - which is our statutory framework - tells us that there are 7
areas of learning and development - 3 prime areas which are the most important and 4 specific areas
which support children’s learning in the prime areas.

The prime areas of learning and development are -

• Personal, social and emotional development
• Physical development
• Communication and language
The EYFS tells us that we must support children in the prime areas from birth, to ensure they are able
to make friends, communicate, listen, move, understand about healthy living, keep safe, develop well
emotionally etc.

The specific areas of learning and development are -

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the world
• Expressive arts and design
The EYFS tells us that the specific areas are very important because they help children to learn
essential skills and knowledge for starting school.

To ensure children experience all 7 areas of learning, we will plan lots of exciting and challenging
playful activities for them during their time with us. We will teach children to play with our resources,
take them on outings to extend their learning, invite friends to play and work with them to make sure
they are busy, happy and learning throughout the day.
We will ask you to work closely with us - the EYFS says that when we are all working closely together
outcomes for your child are raised. We want to know what your child is learning at home - we want to
find out about your child’s likes and dislikes - if you tell us about your child’s home interests and
experiences we can follow them up here.
The EYFS tells us that we also need to give you lots of information about what your child is doing here
so you can continue their learning at home. We will let you know when we spot something new
happening in your child’s learning and we will sometimes give you ideas for activities you might want
to use with your child at home - things they have enjoyed doing here.
We will provide you with a communication diary which we ask you to write in - we will use it to keep a
record of your child’s day-to-day activities while they are here as well. It is really important that we
link with other settings your child attends as well - so please let them know we will be in touch!

Here is some more information about the 7 areas of learning and development. If you have any
questions please do not hesitate to ask.
