which should not be there.
A THANK- YOU LETTER
Dear Angie,
I am writing to say how much I enjoyed staying with you and your family, and to thank you for your
hospitality.
I have had a good flight home, and my parents and sisters were waiting at the airport to meet me.
There was so much news to tell to them that we stayed up talking until long after the midnight!
They were extremely interested to see through all my photographs, especially the ones of you and
yourr family.
I have been trying to persuade them to visit England in next year so that they can meet you. I know you
would all get on with very well together.
I must say that it's nice to be home again and speaking my own language, but I'm afraid I may forget
all the English I had learnt while
I was staying with you . So I'm planning to write to you regularly as a way of practicing. I'm sure of I'll
make lots of mistakes and it would be helpful if you could correct the worst ones.
Please write soon. I'm looking forward to your news.
EXERCISE 7
Underline the odd words/ phrase
Dear Simon,
It was a great to see you again after so long and to be able to discuss about all the things we used to do
when we were students together learning english in London. I hope you and had a good time journey
home. Did the flight reach to Athens in time for you to get up your connection? I hope so. Do you
remember I promised to send you that a book we talked about? Well, I've searched in everywhere for it
but so far I haven't managed to find it. As soon as I will do, I'll put it in the post to for you - it's a really
exciting story. And now I'd like to ask you about a favor, ont for me but for mys sister. She wants to
have a work in Greece. She doesn't mind what she does- she would be to happy to work in a bar or to
look after children. So if only you know of anything, please let us know. She'd like to spend until one
year there from next January, which it should be possible. I think. She has been decided it is the best
thing for her. I'm looking forward to know hearing from you soon. Give my regards to your family.
Best wishes, Costars

lines which are correct. Write down any words which should not be there.
Dear Roberto,
Thank you for your letter. I am glad to hear you are enjoying 1
well. When I will have some free time, perhaps I'll come to London 2
to see you, and then we can go out for a meal together somewhere. 3
I've just got back from a trip to Lisbon. My father has just been 4
opened a big new factory in Portugal, and he had wanted me to 5
help him with marketing. Lisbon is often said to be a very 6
beautiful city, but I didn't have the chance to see much of it! Dad 7
always makes me work hard! We had went to losts of business 8
meetings, and I met all the staff. It would have been some more 9
useful if I did had learnt Portuguese instead of French at school! 10
But luckily they all are speak very good English. In fact, Dad's 11
partner was invited me to lunch, and promised to teach me 12
Portuguese, so maybe I'll be accept his offer next time. You don't 13
speak Portuguese, do you?
On my way home, the plane was being delayed for four hours, 14
because of my dog, I think. And poor Samantha was been waiting at 15
the airport all that time for me! It must be true love! 16
Keep in touch.
Best wishes,
Thomas

EXERCISE 14
Dear Pat,
I know you need recipes for (the) food you can/want to prepare before your visitors arrive.
I suggest you do a nice salad, which is easy to make and tasty, but not too expensive,
All you need is lots of colourful vegetables, like carrots and peppers, and some onions, cut into small
chunks, nce, and salad dressing.
Next, using a large, heavy pan soften the vegetables in oil or butter for five
Then add water, rice and salt and cook until the rice is done.
Meanwhile, make a salad dressing by mixing lemon juice or vinegar with oil, mustard and pepper
Rinse the rice and vegetables in hot water, and then, before they cool, add the dressing, stirring well
This is also very good if you add things like chopped nuts, oggs or cheese at the same time as the
dressing, stirring well.
I hope (that) you enjoy (your) cooking
EXERCISE 16
Dear Prof Richardson,
I am writing/write to tell you that I find the computer course too difficult for
me (to follow take)
I want to know whether if I can choose an easier course
Since I am a student of arts and do not know much about maths, I find it difficult to understand (the)
many terms and figures in the computer course, let alone remember them
I (do) know how important the this course is, but I simply cannot develop any interest in it.
In fact. I have been dozing in class no matter how hard I try to concentrate.
I have been feeling very miserable about this
To/ In order to get out of this embarrassing situation, I would like to choose a less challenging course
I look forward to your decision
EXERCISE 17
Dear Sir,
Although I am not in the habit of writing letters to the newspaper, I feel I should inform your readers of
the excellent meal I and my family had at the Station Restaurant yesterday evening
As you know, this restaurant is under new management, and I was curious to find out if the food and
service had improved
From among the many appetizing dishes on the menu, we chose the day's
special roast lamb with mint sauce
This came with minestrone soup, and was followed by ice-cream
A complimentary cup of coffee rounded off the dinner
The atmosphere in the main dining room was very pleasant with the helpful attitude of the waitresses
Last but not the least, the prices of the ants on offer were most reasonable
All in all, I have no hesitation in recommending the Station Restaurant to
other families for an enjoyable evening out
EXERCISE 18
Dear Sir,
I am preparing a birthday party for any friend/ a friend of mine, and I wish to inquire if your restaurant
has private rooms with catering service for hire
If so, I would like to reserve one room for next Thursday, January 17, from 5pm to 8 pm.
The room should/must be large enough to accommodate 50 people comfortably
As the celebration will be in cocktail party style, and most people will be standing up most of the time,
only about ten chairs will be needed.
In addition, I would like to order a buffet with both hot and cold dishes.
If the room does not have a bar, perhaps a drinks table could/should be set up.
For entertainment, karaoke would be acceptable
By the way, as the weather will /is going to be cold that evening, cloakroom arrangements should be
made for the safekeeping of hats and coats
EXERCISE 19
Dear Sir,
I write to complain about the dirt and smoke which comes/ is coming ( out) you’re your factory
chimneys
Three days ago 1 decided to do my washing
I washed the sheets and put them out to dry as it was a nice sunny day and there was a breeze
When I took the washing in, I was horrified to discover that it was covered in/with dirty marks
I assume that the breeze (that) I mentioned carried/ must have carried the dirt from your factory smoke
This is not only because of my dirty sheets but (also) because I/we have two small children who are
made to breathe the same (dirty) air
Until this incident I thought your chimneys were safe and clean
I have already written to the local council about this matter
Furthermore, I must should wam you that I am going to/ will write to the local
newspaper tomorrow
I look forward to receiving your reply
EXERCISE 20
Dear Jane
I've got the information you asked me (to get) about the Student's Railcard
It seems (that) you can only buy one up to March 15th
It looks like a pretty good deal because it only costs £30 and you (can) get a lot for that
It allows you to travel anywhere you want for six months and it (also) lets you pay less at some hotels
and restaurants
You can only get it at the Student Travel Office in Piccadilly and you have to go (there) and get it
yourself
It's (only) for students so you have to prove that you are doing a full- time course.
You ( should/ have to) apply at the office and have to give them a passport- sized photograph.
It is/ seams to have a really good offer.
I think you should encourage (any) other students who want to do so to get one before it is too late.
EXERCISE 21
Dear Mike,
I just thought I'd drop you a line and tell you about the summer job I've just got in a local bookshop
They've just sent me all the rules of the job and I must say some of them look a bit strict
I'll have to get there on time - that is at 8 30 - and they say that anyone who is regularly late will get
sacked
We're supposed to be smartly dressed-things like jeans won't be allowed
We're all supposed to try hard to deal with the customers as quickly and as well as we can and are
polite to them all
We are told to ask someone senior if there’s a question we can’t answer.
I look as if I’m going to be pretty busy.
I’ll be taking orders on the phone , getting orders ready before people come to collect them and that the
shelves are always full
Still, they’re going to pay me everyweek, which I’m glad about.
I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy it but it won't be for long and I do need the money.
Hope to see you soon
