GRAMMAR: Sequencing clauses
For an action which happens before another action, we can use:
1. After + ing
After losing his wallet, he called the police.
2. having + past participle
Having found the money, he took it to the police station.
For an action which happens at the same time as another action, we can use:
3. as + past simple
As he put his hand in his pocket he realised his wallet was missing.

5. a present participle
Looking up, sge saw a police officer approaching.
The subject of the participle clause and the main clause must be the same.

1. You are going to do the following exam writing task. First think of some
ideas dor your story. Use the questions below to help you.
2. Look again at the stages of a story in exercise 3 on page 22. Think how
your ideas will fit into paragraphs. Use your ideas from exercise 1 to make
notes under paragraphs heading. (You may need more or fewer than four
paragraphs)
3. Write the first paragraphs of the story. Set the scene briefly with
background information, then tell the first event of the story. Remember to
use approriate narrative tenses.
4. Complete the time expressions with the words below. Check the meaning
of all the expressions.
5. Read the Exam tip. Find a sequence of short sentence at a dramatic point in
the story in exercise 2 on page 22.
6. Find the following features which make the writing style interesting in the
story on page 22.
