Biography of Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes was a French essayist, social critic and literary critic whose writings on
semiotic, the formal study of symbols and signs, became instrumental in the
establishment of structuralism and the New Criticism as main intellectual movements.
He was born in 1915 in Cherbourg, France. Afterward, he studied classical
letters (1939), grammar and philology (1943) at the University of Paris. Besides, he was
appointed to the École Pratique des Hautes Études after working (1952-1959) at the
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. Furtermore, he was the first person to
hold the chair of literary semiology at the Collège de France in 1939.
Barthes’s literary style is stimulating, sometimes eccentric and needlessly
obscure. His theories contained brilliant insight, although some said they were not.
However, by 1970 Barthes's intellectual influence was immense even outside of France.
Michel Foucault was influenced by him.
He first book was Le Degré zéro de l’écriture (1953) and the most popular was
Fragments d’un discours amoureux (1977). Barthes died at the age of 64 after suffering
a car accident that left him badly injured. Several posthumous collections of his writings
were published, and in the last volume Barthes's homosexuality, which he had not
publicly acknowledged, was revealed.
