01 – Self-diagnosis
01-1 Self-diagnosis I
Note
The self-diagnosis monitors only a part of the injection
and ignition system.
Operation
The engine control unit is equipped with a fault memory.
The fault memory is designed as a permanent memory.
If malfunctions occur in the monitored sensors or compo-
nents, they are stored in the fault memory with indication
of the fault type.
Faults which occur only temporarily (sporadically) are
displayed with the suffix „/SP“. Possible causes of spo-
radic faults are e.g. a loose contact or a temporary line in-
terruption. If a sporadic fault no longer occurs after 40
engine starts, it is automatically erased.
The stored faults can be read out with vehicle system
tester -V.A.G 1552-, fault read-out scan tool
-V.A.G 1551- or with vehicle diagnosis, measurement
and informations system -VAS 5051- ⇒ 01-1 page 4.
After the fault(s) has(have) been removed the fault mem-
ory must be erased ⇒ 01-1 page 5.
Note
Following description only relates to vehicle system test-
er -V.A.G 1552- with the current program card 5.0. When
not using the current program card or when using the
fault read-out scan tool -V.A.G 1551- with integrated
printer or using the vehicle diagnosis, measurement and
information system -VAS 5051- a minor deviation in the
display is possible.

1) When the ignition is switched on only if the engine does not start (starter must be operated first of all for at least 6 seconds).
2) To be carried out after the following operations: replacing engine control unit, throttle valve control unit or engine or disconnecting battery.
– Switch on ignition.
The electronic power control fault lamp -K132- must light
up.
If the electronic power control fault lamp -K132- does not S01-0090
light up with the ignition switched on.
S01-0091
Note
♦ The exhaust warning light -K83- may flash or come on
as a steady light. The fault memory must be interro-
gated whatever happens ⇒ 01-1 page 5.
♦ Warning light flashes: There is a fault which is likely to
damage the catalytic converter in this driving condi-
tion. Only low performance driving is allowed in this
driving condition!
♦ Warning comes on as a steady light: There is a fault
which deteriorates the exhaust gas quality. Interro-
gate the fault memory of the engine control unit.
♦ There is a vehicle performance fault or the customer
is making a complaint and the exhaust warning light
-K83- does not light up so the fault memory should be
interrogated since there may be faults stored there
which do not immediately switch on the exhaust warn-
ing light -K83-.
Test conditions
• Battery voltage at least 11.5 volts
• Earth connection to engine and gearbox O.K.
• Fuses according to current flow diagram O.K.

Note
♦ The actuator diagnosis can only be carried out when
the engine is not running and the ignition is switched
on.
♦ The actuator diagnosis is aborted when the engine is
started or when a signal from the rotary speed sender
is detected.
♦ The actuators are tested acoustically or by touch.
♦ If the actuator diagnosis must be repeated without the
engine being started in the meantime, switch off igni-
tion for about 40 seconds.
♦ The ignition must be switched off before starting up
the engine after the actuator diagnosis.

Note
♦ Re display field 2:
♦ Voltage signal „Mixture rich (low level of residual oxy-
gen)“ is at approx. 0.7...1.0 V.
♦ Voltage signal „Mixture lean (high level of residual ox-
ygen)“ is at approx. 0.0...0.3 V.
♦ A voltage jump from 0.7...1.0 V to 0.0...0.3 V or vice
versa takes place at the transition from „rich“ to „lean“
and vice versa (λ = 1.0).
♦ In view of the steep voltage jump the lambda control
is not able to maintain constant the ideal mixture com-
position which corresponds to λ = 1.0. The control
constantly fluctuates back and forward between the
„slightly too lean“ and „slightly too rich“ states.
♦ The displayed value falls occasionally below 0.3 V
and exceeeds 0.6 V. Displayed value below 0.45 V
means lean, over 0.45 V rich.
♦ At idling speed, the lambda probe voltage upstream of
the catalytic converter must fluctuate between a rich
and leaner mixture. The lambda probe voltage down-
stream of the catalytic converter should indicate a
constant rich or lean mixture. If the voltage also fluctu-
Note
♦ Re display field 2:
♦ Display 1.50 V equals approx. Lambda 1.
♦ Voltage signal „Mixture rich“ (low level of residual ox-
ygen) is at approx. 0.13...1.50 V.
♦ Voltage signal „Mixture rich“ (high level of residual ox-
ygen) is at approx. 1.50...4.80 V.
♦ Lambda probe enables through its structure constant
lambda control due to the permanent signal for the de-
viation of λ = 1.
♦ The control is dynamic, as the deviation from the
specification is current and is known as the concrete
value.

results in:
♦ poor driveability (jerking when changing gears, load
alteration shock etc.)
♦ Increase in fuel consumption
♦ Increase in pollution
♦ Storage of non-existent faults in fault memory
♦ Functions not being performed (lambda control, actu-
ation of the active charcoal filter system, etc.)
♦ Reduction of the gearbox life

Inspecting the camshaft position sensor
-G163-
The camshaft position sensor -G163- indicates the igni-
tion position for cylinder 1.
If it fails the knock control is deactivated and the ignition
angle is slightly reduced as a cylinder assignment is no
longer possible.
Without the signal from the camshaft position sensor the
S28-0133
engine runs on and can be started again:
♦ In the event of a fault detection the engine control unit
generates an ignition spark in each cylinder for each
crankshaft rotation.
♦ There is no noticeable effect on the injection if there is
a displacement of an engine revolution. The injection
takes place in front of the closed inlet valve instead of
in the opened inlet valve. This only has a very slight in-
fluence on the quality of the mixture formation.
Note
♦ The camshaft position sensor -G163- is identical to
the Hall sender -G40-.
♦ The correct setting of the timing can be checked in
measured value block 012 ⇒ Chapter 01-5.
