What is transliteration?
- The process of converting a word or single character from
one writing system to another.
Example: こんにちは
こ - KO
ん-N
Translation: “Hello”,
に - NI
“Good day”, or “Good
ち - CHI
Afternoon”.
は – WA OR HA

Another examples:
Arabic transliteration
The names we use for stars largely derive from Arabic. For
instance, Rigel – the brightest star in the Orion constellation – is
“ ”رجل الجبّارin Arabic, which can be transliterated into “Rijl ul-Jabbār”.
Greek transliteration
ACTIVITY
Instruction: On one whole sheet of paper, introduce yourself using
different characters (Arabic, Mandarin, Hangul, Thai, etc.). After you
transliterate the characters using the Latin alphabet, translate it into
English.
Example: Меня зовут Кристен (Menya zovut Christen)
Translation: My name is Christen
