What is transliteration?
- The process of converting a word or single character from
one writing system to another.

こ - KO
ん-N
Translation: “Hello”,
に - NI
“Good day”, or “Good
ち - CHI

Another examples:
Arabic transliteration

The names we use for stars largely derive from Arabic. For
instance, Rigel – the brightest star in the Orion constellation – is
“ ”‫رجل الجبّار‬in Arabic, which can be transliterated into “Rijl ul-Jabbār”.
Greek transliteration

Greek has characters that correspond almost perfectly to the Latin

alphabet, with few exceptions. However, transliteration can sometimes be
oriented more towards transcription, as in the case of the word ἄγγελος,
which is a very common word in sacred texts. This particular word can be
transliterated as “ànghelos”. Two “γ” letters together can be transliterated
as “n” while just one “γ” letter can be transliterated as “gh”.

What do you think is the importance of

transliteration?
- Transliteration is used to help language learners read words written in foreign
scripts, by writing the sound of the word using the equivalent Latin letters.
- People who are working and living abroad, such as for example in China, Japan,
Korea and Thailand, find it a lot easier when words or sounds are transcribed into a
Latin-based alphabet. Without a Latin alphabet, getting understanding and
knowledge from foreign scripts or languages is so much more difficult .

ACTIVITY
Instruction: On one whole sheet of paper, introduce yourself using
different characters (Arabic, Mandarin, Hangul, Thai, etc.). After you
transliterate the characters using the Latin alphabet, translate it into
English.
Example: Меня зовут Кристен (Menya zovut Christen)
Translation: My name is Christen
