Rationale for Lesson Design/Plan

Section 1: routine information:

• Grade :5
• Section of work: Common fractions
• Sub-Topic of this lesson: ordering and comparing common fractions

Section 2: purpose/objectives
• KEY QUESTIONS: What are fractions?
: name different types of fractions
• SKILLS: Learners will learn how to order common fractions from ascending to
descending order vice versa.
• ATTITUDES AND VALUES: This lesson will teach learners that there are different
types of fractions and that fractions are part of numbers.

Section 3: Rationale for key pedagogical choices (methodology used)

Common fractions are fractions whereby a numerator and denominator are both integers
separated by a horizontal line. They help us in everyday life such as baking, cooking
recipes and sharing fruits. The content of this lesson needs teaching aids paper plates.
Paper plates will show how fractions vary in size. I will also use a fraction chart to match
the fractions with the diagram.
Section 4: Write a detailed sequence of lesson steps that builds a systematic and coherent
process of learning.

Describe what will happen in each lesson step

I will instruct learners to cut the paper
plates:
- Cut the plate in halves
- Cut the plates in quarters
- Make six equal pieces
5. Activity I will give learners an activity based on Complete the activity
what they have learnt.

6. consolidate We will go through the activity together

Observe where learners may find
difficulties in.
I will instruct leaners to complete similar
exercise in their DBE for further study at
home.
