Module 4:
Diagnosis of TB Disease
STUDY GUIDE - Module 4: Diagnosis of TB Disease 1

Introduction

Several terms were introduced in this module such as Active

TB diseases, presumptive TB , Pulmonary TB (PTB)
Extra-pulmonary TB (EPTB) , Bacteriologically confirmed TB
(BCTB), Clinically diagnosed TB (CDTB), New , Previously
treated for TB, High-risk for MDRTB. Rifampicin-resistant TB
(RR-TB) and Turnaround time (TAT).

Disease classification by drug susceptibility testing were also

discussed; classified either as mono or poly drug or
multi-drug resistant, further explained the extent of resistance
to one or more first line drugs and additional resistance to
second line drugs.

Furthermore, policies for the clinical diagnosis of TB cases

were explicitly explained accordingly whether...
• Assessment for considering clinical diagnosis of TB cases
were explicitly explained.
• All presumptive TB should be tested using rapid test.
• All laboratories providing TB diagnostic tests, whether
public or private, shall participate in the Quality Assurance
(QA) system of the NTP. A TB Medical Advisory
Committee (TB MAC) shall be established at least per
region to provide clinical expertise and guidance in the
diagnosis of clinically-diagnosed Drug-resistant TB and
management of difficult TB and DR TB cases.

Procedures in Diagnosis of TB Cases were also explained

using several algorithms.

Learning objectives:

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. Apply the NTP policies and procedures for the diagnosis

of TB disease.

2. Request the appropriate diagnostic test using the Form

2a. NTP Laboratory Request and Result Form and the TB
Laboratory Specimen Receiving Form

3. Interpret results of diagnostic tests and determine

appropriate action following the diagnostic algorithm.

4. Decide on clinical diagnosis of adult and pediatric

patients based on sound evidence.

5. Define and differentiate the TB Disease classifications

based on bacteriologic status, anatomic site, treatment
history and drug susceptibility tests.

Something to reflect on
In this module, you have learned the following:
• Policies and procedures for the diagnosis
ofbacteriologically confirmed TB disease
• Approaches for clinical diagnosis when laboratory test
cannot confirm BC TB and sound decision making based
on other clinical evidence
• About different diagnostic tests
• The use of Form 2a. NTP laboratory request and result
form
• Interpretation of the diagnostic test results and taking
appropriate action
• TB disease classification based on bacteriological status,
anatomic site, treatment history and drug susceptibility
tests
