Some summer days can be scorching hot. In fact, many places have been

experiencing heat waves lately. Those spots include parts of the United States,

Europe, China, and more. People work to keep cool when the temps soar, and

many folks also protect their pets from the heat! Do you know how? Follow these

tips to keep your fuzzy buddies chill all summer long.

1. Keep Your Pet Hydrated and Cool

Always make sure your pet has plenty of water. This is especially important

during heat waves. The Humane Society recommends adding ice to water when

it’s super-hot out.

Make sure your companion has lots of shade. But when it’s really hot out, it is

best to keep your pets inside. Air conditioning is best for chilling out.

2. Never Leave Your Pet in the Car

You should never leave your pet in a hot car. Even if the windows are cracked, the

temperature inside of a vehicle can climb quickly. Say it’s an 85°F (29°C) day. It

only takes ten minutes for your car to reach 102°F (39°C) inside. Your pet can

easily get heatstroke.

3. Watch Out for Heatstroke

Extreme temperatures can cause an illness called heatstroke in pets. Know the

signs of this condition. Some symptoms of heatstroke include heavy panting,

intense drooling, vomiting, and brick-red gum color. When cats are too hot, they

may breathe with their mouths open.

Some animals are more likely to get heatstroke than others. They include pets

with thick fur. Older, very young, and overweight animals are all more likely to get

heatstroke too.

What do you do if your pet has heatstroke? The Humane Society says to move the

animal into the shade or an air-conditioned room. Then, you can run cool

(not cold) water over your pet. You can also wrap the animal in cool, damp

towels. Let them drink small amounts of cool water. Then take them to the vet!

4. Change Up Your Walks

Limit your pet’s exercise on hot days. Take your dogs on shorter walks. Stop for

water breaks often! Choose areas with more shade. Walk on grass instead of hot

asphalt. Your pup’s body can heat up quickly as it is closer to the ground. Hot

sidewalks and roads can also burn a dog’s paw pads.
