TEASER
Edie eyes the boots -- which turns into cloven hooves -- and
back into boots again. WTF?! She gasps. She hears a sloshing
sound - dark shadow-tendrils enter under the space between
the tablecloth and the floor. Edie joins her brother --
clenching her eyes shut -- holding him tighter, as we --

CUT TO:
Edie pops in her earbuds and scrolls through her phone until
she stops on a song and presses play:
Shutting her door, Edie clocks a door opening down the hall.
Edie rushes away, pulls up the hood on her hoodie, to avoid:
Heavy clouds darken the sky as Edie walks the seedy and rough-
looking area. She continues towards:
She kills the music and stuffs all the supplies into the
large medic pack while she keeps an eye out for anyone.
She replaces the tile. The ceiling seems to droop from the
weight of the bag. But it’ll hold. It has to.
She’s about to step down when she hears the echo of footsteps
in the hall. Then the CREAK of the restroom door opening.
CREAK again, and he’s gone. A beat and we see Edie’s feet
quietly touch the floor in front of the toilet. She exhales.
Revision 4.
CRYSTAL
Another week, another specialist.
Edie looks at her with sympathy.
EDIE
If you need anything...
Edie gives her a hug and a reassuring smile. They’ve been
best friends since they met in nursing school.
JOHN MARTIN, 40s, Doctor with a God complex, face buried in
his smart phone, enters.
DR. MARTIN
So, you paged me --?
EDIE
Three times. He’s in a lot of pain.
He looks up from his phone finally.
DR. MARTIN
We have him on pain management.
EDIE
I think we need to increase his
dosage.
He pulls out a prescription pad and writes out his order and
hands it to her.
DR. MARTIN
Point five cc’s of hydromorphone.
EDIE
He needs more than that.
On Dr. Martin’s face -- not used to being challenged.
DR. MARTIN
It’s standard, Nurse Spence.
EDIE
I assured him he wouldn’t die in
pain.
He stares at her a beat – she’s too emotionally involved.
DR. MARTIN
Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
You should know better.
He looks back to his phone and walks out. Edie steams.
Revision 6.
EDIE
(re: Dr. Martin)
So fucking entitled. Can’t even do
his damn job.
Crystal watches as Edie pulls out a pen from her pocket.
CRYSTAL
Don’t.
Edie adds a ‘one’ in front of the ‘point five’ on the scrip.
She crosses to Mr. Wallace and touches his shoulder.
EDIE
Help is on the way.
Edie leaves. Crystal shakes her head at her friend’s caring
and tenacity as she throws the bed linens into a bag.
CRYSTAL
‘Cause I know how to harass some
bitches.
Edie doesn’t smile. Crystal sees her friend is going
somewhere dark. She reaches in to give Edie a hug -
EDIE
See you at the club tonight?
Crystal pulls back, surprised.
CRYSTAL
Don’t play tough girl with me.
Let’s Netflix and chill at your
place.
EDIE
I wanna go out - I need noise. Meet
up after my night rounds?
CRYSTAL
OK, Doctor Edie. If you’re feelin’
it, we’re doin’ it.
Crystal grabs a patient file and walks off. Edie turns, walks
down the hall and ducks into -
Edie shuts the door and takes a small, worn manila ENVELOPE -
already opened - from her back pocket. She pulls out from it
a pocket-sized black journal - she lied to Crystal.
She puts the book into the envelope, which reads “Friends
Halfway House.” A long exhale - and she opens the door.
MEL
It’s not the first time.
EDIE
If anything like this happens
again, you come find me in the ER
like, yesterday, ok?
MEL
(nods, appreciative)
They took my radio too.
EDIE
I’ll get you a new one.
MEL
You look tired, Doctor Edie. You
been working too hard.
She grimaces. He’s not wrong.
MEL (CONT'D)
Can I get something, you know, for
the pain?
She studies him a beat - this poor man wants to numb all of
the pain -- she gets that. Edie reaches into her bag and
pulls out Jake’s photo. Mel, disappointed it’s not drugs,
shakes his head at the photo.
MEL (CONT'D)
Sorry.
Edie reaches in to her bag again and pulls out a small packet
labeled ‘valium’ and gestures for him to take it.
MEL (CONT'D)
Thanks, Doctor Edie.
She stands to leave. Mel grabs her arm, startling her.
MEL (CONT'D)
Jake’s out there somewhere.
He lets go. She puts on a hopeful smile and grabs her medic
pack - it’s noticeably lighter now. She turns and spots
something coming out from the dark alley across the street --
DAN, 40s, stumbling out from the alley holding his protruding
left radial bone with his right hand, blood dripping from a
split lip. Edie bolts across to the -
EDIE
What happened, Dan?
He mumbles something, points into the darkened alley.
EDIE (CONT'D)
It’ll be OK, hang on.
She dials on her cell: “911”
Dan pulls away from her, TERRIFIED -- turns to run.
EDIE (CONT'D)
Where’re you -?
A blow sends her sprawling across the alley, hitting the back
of her head on a garbage dumpster with a BANG. Rats scatter
from behind it into the darkness.
She ducks and grabs a metal post off the ground and swings it
- WHAM! - right at his face, but he’s still coming at her.
Fueled with adrenaline, Edie jumps out of the way of the next
swing and whips out her taser – BZZT! Right in his solar
plexus, and the man drops to the ground with a thud.
CUT TO:
YOUNG EDIE
It’s ok, Jake, they’re just
talking.
YOUNG JAKE
...Ok.
YOUNG EDIE
Draw something happy.
BACK TO:
LITA
He’s being treated.
EDIE
...the man who attacked me?
LITA
I don’t know, but EMTs found you
unconscious. I’d worry more about
yourself than -
EDIE
I’m fine -
Edie attempts to get up, has a head rush. Lita gently pushes
her back down.
LITA
You know the rules.
Lita is called away, closes the curtains and walks off. A
beat and Edie throws off her blanket, gets up and with a
slight limp, walks out into -
DR. MARTIN
(not having it)
Go lie down. I’m not getting blamed
if you faint from a hematoma.
EDIE
(I tried)
Right.
Edie turns and limps down the hall until she reaches -
ROOM 4:
Empty. Confused, Edie steps back into the -
HALLWAY:
And that’s when she sees HIM - TY BAXTER - way down at the
end of the hall. A tall NURSE escorts him to the elevator.
Edie limp/runs down the long hallway to catch them.
The elevator doors close just as Edie arrives. She
immediately pounds the call button. The door quickly opens
but - No one’s there. How can that be?
She steps onto the elevator - no one inside – WTF? She looks
up to the elevator’s ceiling and sees the emergency door.
She uses the railings to give herself a lift and climbs up,
popping open the ceiling door. She looks up – and up and up –
the elevator shaft is dark and makes strange creaky noises.
LOUD RING. Startled, Edie realizes it’s her cell phone. She
drops down to read --
Edie begins to text back when she spots on the floor: a lapel
PIN of The Ouroboros - in her PTSD state, this doesn’t
register to her, but we notice it. She picks it up and holds
on to it as she presses floor number two.
MONTAGE
INT. ELEVATOR
Edie gets back on at the 12th floor and looks at the panel in
the elevator. The next floor is 14. She pushes it and the
elevator doors close and it begins to move.
EDIE
Coño!
The elevator stops. Edie sees the digital display reads “13”
but on the panel there is no 13th floor button to choose.
EDIE (CONT'D)
Wait, what?
(bangs on the door)
Hey!
Edie steps out onto a hospital floor like she’s never seen
before: Grey walls, no windows, metal grating covering a wall
clock, what looks like a tranquilizer gun mounted on the
wall, and – are those claw marks on the floor?
EDIE
Hello?
EDIE (CONT'D)
(calls out)
Anyone? How do I get out of here?
Revision 16.
EDIE (CONT'D)
(sotto)
And where the hell is ‘here’?
Scared but resolved, she steps further onto the ward. She
thinks she hears footsteps around the corner -- she follows --
The light in the cage goes out. Edie tugs at the door.
EDIE (CONT'D)
(into cage)
Can you hear me? Are you ok?
(to the floor)
Helloooo! Anyone?!
To get a better look, she pushes her face against the metal -
her nose sticking through the bars. Did she just hear
something SLITHER?
EDIE (CONT'D)
That did not just happen. This is
just another one of my fucked up
dreams. Wake up, Edie!
EDIE (CONT'D)
Who’s in charge here?
EDIE (CONT'D)
No, no, no.
EDIE’S POV: She mashes the ‘door close’ button. As she looks
up, she notices a design affixed to the front of the nurses’
station: THE OUROBOROS.
Realizing she knows, Edie looks at the pin -- the same design
-- but wait -- she pulls out Jake’s journal -- flips through -
- finds an Ouroboros of the same design - Jake’s been here.
SMASH TO:
CRYSTAL
You always have the most fucked up
dreams. I’m going to go find the
doctor to see if we can get you the
hell out of here.
Edie nods. Crystal leaves. Edie pulls back the sheets.
EDIE
Jake... Jake, it’s me.
To find a pale, gray and still WOMAN lying on the bed. Edie
turns to leave. The patient lets out a deathly rattle.
Edie turns back to her. She has to help. Edie looks around
and finds her chart, trying to make sense of it all.
EDIE
What’s your name? Who’s your
attending physician?
DYING WOMAN
Water.
Edie spots a cup next to her table and helps her sip. She
stares at her a beat - what the hell disease does she have?
EDIE
Where’d you get this?
Revision 19.
With the woman’s death goes Edie’s best lead on her brother.
EDIE (CONT'D)
What the fucking fuck!
She turns to get the hell out, only to run right into:
MORGAN
I can’t tell from that photo.
Growing more desperate, Edie pulls out Jake’s journal and
opens to an Ouroboros drawing.
EDIE
Why did he paint this over and
over?
MORGAN
That’s nice work.
Edie slams the book shut - that’s it.
EDIE
(to room, looking about)
Crystal, are you getting me back
for filling your car with water-
condoms on your birthday?
Looks to an expressionless Morgan -- nothing. Continues.
EDIE (CONT'D)
You can come out now. This is way
beyond that - I’m impressed. And
over it.
No response. Freaking out, Edie takes in the place again --
looks down at herself -- spiraling --
EDIE (CONT'D)
Wait, I hit my head out there and
I’m in a coma, right? This is some
“Vanilla Sky” shit?
MORGAN
I assure you, your life’s never
been more real.
EDIE
What the hell is this place?
MORGAN
This ward cares for supernatural
creatures.
EDIE
Bullshit it does. Tell me what Jake
has to do with this floor, or I’m
going to admin.
Edie turns to leave.
MORGAN
You’re in no position to make empty
threats.
Edie turns back to Morgan as the lights flicker. She looks
around and hears that strange sloshing NOISE again.
Revision 22.
EDIE
OK. I’m in.
CUT TO:
Edie spots a PHOTO of Jake and her on the inside locker door -
DISSOLVE TO:
Revision 23.
JAKE
Hey.
EDIE
I was so worried.
They break. She pulls his sketchbook from her side-bag, hands
it to him. You can feel the relief, the comfort it brings him
just to hold it. A beat, then considers the reality.
JAKE
My bail?
EDIE
Don’t worry about that.
JAKE
Where’d you get the money?
EDIE
I robbed an old lady. OK, a bank.
It was an old lady who worked at a
bank.
(his laugh reassures her
he’ll be ok )
School loan.
JAKE
Edie, no.
EDIE
(shrugs, covering the
hardship it is)
I’ll get a job to pay it back.
JAKE
A first year Med student? You don’t
have time for that. I’m getting
clean, Edie, and I’m getting a job.
She looks at him - she wants to believe him, but they’ve been
down this road before.
EDIE
Let’s get you sober, I’ll worry
about the rest.
Revision 24.
JAKE
Can we go get breakfast?
EDIE
Leftover pizza and some coffee at
my place work?
BACK TO:
CRYSTAL
Edie.
EDIE
Hey.
CRYSTAL
(annoyed)
“Hey?” You ghosted me last night.
What the fuck, E?
(notices her packing)
What’re you doing?
EDIE
I gotta make some changes.
CRYSTAL
You’re quitting? Sure you don’t
want to think about this for a sec?
See a trauma counselor maybe?
EDIE
I’m fine. Just got to focus
completely on Jake.
CRYSTAL
I know you’re worried, but you have
to live your life. Let’s grab a
drink and talk about it.
Crystal put her hand around Edie’s arm to prod her to get up.
Edie pulls away.
Revision 25.
EDIE
I can’t just party all the time.
CRYSTAL
He’s your brother, I get it; but
this isn’t on you.
EDIE
You don’t understand.
CRYSTAL
He hurt me too, you know.
(gentler)
You can’t change him. He needs to
do it by himself.
EDIE
He can’t do it by himself. He needs
me.
CRYSTAL
I’m just worried you’re not going
to find the closure you hoped for.
EDIE
I gotta do this, Crys. I’ll call
you this week - promise - we’ll get
a drink.
ZELL
It’s the most I could authorize.
EDIE
Money’s not everything.
She shakes his hand, turns to leave, then walks back to him.
EDIE (CONT'D)
I’m sorry; you’ve been great. But I
have to find my brother and I know
how to do that now.
Revision 26.
EDIE
(sotto)
Keeping it classy, Miss Ada.
EDIE
For fuck’s sake -
MISS ADA
Pay up and you can sleep in your
bed again.
(notices Edie’s bruised
face)
You’re not living right.
EDIE
Obviously, if I’m renting from you.
Edie turns and walks off. Miss Ada gives her the stink-eye.
Edie storms out down the walkway, turns to get a look at the
apartment building. Sizes it up.
CUT TO:
Revision 27.
SNAP. A strut pops off and dangles. This won’t hold long.
EDIE
Hey!
EDIE (CONT'D)
That’s Jake’s.
EDIE
(calls out)
You can keep the bag. I just want
to talk to you about Jake.
She pulls out her flashlight and taser as she turns the
corner - he’s gone.
MORGAN
You’re late.
EDIE
I literally just almost had every
drop of blood drained from my body.
MORGAN
That’s no excuse.
EDIE
What does this do?
MORGAN
It allows you in here...And marks
you as a ‘Protected Commoner’ so
the Chthonics won’t hurt you.
EDIE
Chthonics?
MORGAN
It’s the general name for these
creatures - our patients - and
employers. You should wear it all
the time for your protection.
EDIE
You couldn’t have told me that
before I almost pissed my pants
tonight?
MORGAN
Fear is a good motivator. You had
an interaction with one?
EDIE
(duh)
Yeah.
MORGAN
(moves in closer, serious)
Not all the Chthonics play by the
rules so the pin won’t protect you
from all of them.
EDIE
Great. Well, that’s just - yeah. So
all these creatures are out there
and I’ve never seen them?
MORGAN
People see only what they want to
see.
EDIE
In that case, then can I see a five-
hundred dollar advance?
Revision 30.
MORGAN
That’s not possible.
MORGAN (CONT'D)
You’ll be shadowing Gina today.
She’ll get your scrubs. And Edie -
EDIE
Yeah?
MORGAN
Take a shower. Your smell will
overstimulate many of our patients.
ON Edie - gross, what does that mean? She turns to size Gina
up – is she one of them? Gina’s not pleased with the pairing
either. Edie rolls her eyes and heads for the Changing Room.
Gina nods and Edie tentatively follows her as they walk down
the hall. Edie’s eyes dart around taking it all in, unsure of
the decision she’s made.
EDIE
How long have you worked here?
GINA
I was supposed to have the day off.
But I had to come in and train you.
Gina shoots Edie her best bitch face. Edie pulls out a photo
of Jake, puts it in Gina’s face.
EDIE
You seen this guy?
GINA
You ask too many questions.
Edie follows Gina into the room to find JEROME, late 20s with
rough and tumble good looks, lying in a patient bed. Edie
takes it all in -- the regular trappings of a hospital room --
until she clocks a rusted-looking neck collar with chain
hanging on the wall and all she can think is -
EDIE
(sotto)
This place is fucked.
GINA
(to Jerome)
Are you faking sick just to see me
again? There’s no deductible to
call me.
Gina leans in close, runs her fingers through his hair. Their
eyes meet - you can feel the chemistry.
JEROME
After our last date, I wasn’t sure -
GINA
I’m sure.
Lycanthrope.
EDIE
(re: the restraints)
What does he need those for?
GINA
Still a full moon.
EDIE
You’re a - werewolf?
Revision 32.
JEROME
Oh, newbie.
GINA
Werewolves are children’s tales.
He’s a Lycanthrope - the real deal.
EDIE
So you actually transform?
Jerome suddenly turns to Edie and his teeth morph into larger
wolflike teeth as he snaps at her. She jerks back, freaked,
until she hits the wall behind her. Gina and Jerome laugh.
GINA
Any other questions?
GINA (CONT'D)
(to Edie)
I’ve got this, why don’t you go
clean a bedpan.
EDIE
Your dedication as a health care
provider is inspiring.
EDIE
(sotto)
Dammit!
Chaz deflects and looks past her and reads the screen.
CHAZ
You have a bacitracin wash in room
seven.
He walks off and she looks at the screen to see that room
seven is where Ty Baxter - the man who assaulted her - is.
She stares at his name a beat in disbelief.
The curtain is drawn around Jerome’s bed, but she sees the
silhouettes of Gina straddling Jerome (still restrained) in
his bed. Edie stares - a mixture of disbelief and something
else - interest? She sees the silhouette of Jerome’s fingers
begin to stretch and morph, shaking Edie’s out of her leering
moment. She walks off, visibly disturbed.
FLASH TO:
BACK TO:
Edie shakes it off. She stares at his body and considers the
charring all over him. Tentatively, she wipes his chest and
works her way down his arm – the one missing a hand.
She stops when she gets to his stump and her eyes widen as
she watches - his hand is slowly growing back -- and she can
see the skin gradually growing back over the bone.
Revision 35.
EDIE
No fucking way.
Edie steps onto the packed bus. There’s only one seat open -
next to a STRANGE GUY, 40s - darkly dressed, sunken eyes.
Edie walks down the aisle until she approaches the seat.
EDIE
Is this taken?
She turns and looks him up and down - rough life? Or one of
those creatures?
STRANGE GUY
Freak.
EDIE
(after him)
Whatever, Jack Skellington.
Embarrassed, she reaches into her bag and pulls out her
earbuds and pulls her jacket up around her, leaving just the
top of her head sticking out, like a turtle.
ON EDIE: As she walks around the hospital - past the door she
entered in the teaser - and around the other side until she
approaches a tall electrical unit against the wall.
Edie’s pin glows and the unit slides open, revealing a secret
door. She steps into it and it closes behind her.
Crystal comes around the corner one second after. She stops,
so confused. She could have sworn she saw Edie. She shakes
her head and walks back to the front of the hospital.
GINA (CONT'D)
Go.
Gina takes off. Edie turns around, not changing, heads for -
Her scrubs make contact with his skin and he wakes SCREAMING.
Jerome’s cuffed hand grabs her wrist and pulls her in close --
his eyes dilated, morphing -- panic rises on Edie’s face.
Morgan shoots her a pissed off look and motions for her to
leave. Dejected, Edie turns to walk off.
JEROME
Hang on a sec.
Edie turns around.
JEROME (CONT'D)
(to Morgan)
It’s what, her second day? If she
didn’t know the rules, that’s on
you.
Morgan bristles then stares at Edie a beat, sizing her up.
MORGAN
(to Edie)
Go change and get back here for
rounds. And Edie -
(Edie turns back)
No third chances.
Understanding the stakes, Edie runs out.
DR. TURNAS
What do we have?
EDIE
The patient, Jerome Foster, 28,
Lycanthrope, presents with symptoms
including periodic abdominal pain,
nausea, vomiting.
DR. TURNAS
Probably a bug. What have you been
eating?
JEROME
That’s offensive.
Dr. Turnas begins to press on Jerome’s abdomen. He hides his
squirming from discomfort.
DR. TURNAS
Probably some kind of noro-virus...
Campylobacter...
EDIE
(to Jerome)
Is your vomit sometimes green?
Dr. Turnas turns to Edie, pissed.
DR. TURNAS
I know you’re new here, but I’m the
Doctor, I’ll ask the questions.
An awkward beat, then Dr. Turnas turns to Jerome’s chart.
Edie rolls her eyes - another asshole doctor.
JEROME
Yes.
They both turn to him. He looks to Edie.
JEROME (CONT'D)
It’s green. Sometimes.
EDIE
Could be Intussusception.
DR. TURNAS
(to Jerome)
Is the pain intermittent?
JEROME
Yes.
Dr. Turnas turns to Edie, crosses her arms.
Revision 40.
EDIE
Pain is intermittent because the
intussuscepted bowel segment
transiently stops contracting.
DR. TURNAS
I know how it works. But that’s not
the diagnosis here. You’re
dismissed.
Jerome groans and pulls his legs to his chest.
EDIE
He’s pulling his legs to his torso
due to intermittent cramping and
abdominal pain. It’s
Intussusception, Doctor.
They stare daggers at each other while Jerome exhales, the
pain gone. Dr. Turnas considers him -- looks back to Edie.
DR. TURNAS
Run a blood test for microbials.
Edie looks deflated - she lost the fight.
DR. TURNAS (CONT'D)
And get him an ultrasound of his
abdomen. To be on the safe side.
EDIE
Right away, Doctor.
Dr. Turnas scowls at Edie and exits. Edie catches Jerome’s
impressed expression.
JEROME
You must have bigger balls than I
do.
She turns around to grab a vial, and smirks to herself.
EDIE
Get used to it. I’m here to stay.
They get in. Gina turns to her with a smile.
GINA
Let me give you some advice.
Thinking she’s made a connection, Edie leans in.
GINA (CONT'D)
Be careful what you wish for - once
you’re here, they own you.
The doors open and Gina gets off, leaving Edie gobsmacked.
CUT TO:
Edie gets on the floor and feels the music. She dances for
herself - her style is on lock down she gives it all. Seeing
the release on Edie’s face, Crystal is reassured.
DISSOLVE TO:
They’re on the bed now. Edie rides him cowgirl style. They
moan together. When Edie arches her back, she doesn’t see:
CUT TO:
ASHER
You’re not staying the night?
EDIE
I’ve got my own apartment.
ASHER
But I don’t even know your name.
EDIE
I know.
BACK TO:
She snaps out and looks at the three high scores listed:
She shakes her head, turns off the TV and walks away.
She hears voices coming and closes the window as Morgan and
Dr. Turnas head for her -- Edie knows this means trouble.
EDIE
Good morning, Morgan, Doctor
Turnas. Something wrong?
DR. TURNAS
Your attitude. I’m the doctor. You
don’t question me in front of
patients.
EDIE
But the ultrasound showed I was
right. I saw the report.
Dr. Turnas is apoplectic. Morgan calms her with their hand on
Dr. Turnas’ shoulder.
MORGAN
(to Edie)
Yes, you’re right. But, as the
doctor, Dr. Turnas has to make the
diagnosis.
(hands Edie a file)
You failed to label this file.
Edie gives a quizzical look - what file? - as Morgan and Dr.
Turnas turn to leave. Edie opens the file to find five one-
hundred dollar bills. Morgan look back over their shoulder to
Edie and nods. Morgan’s not so bad after all.
Edie swaps out a low IV bag for a fresh one. She looks down
at a sleeping Ty –- down to his stump -- can’t believe
there’s even more growth -- up to the metacarpal now.
Revision 45.
She considers him – he’s the guy who attacked her, and now
she’s taking care of him. Through the looking glass stuff.
She adjusts his pillow with care, gently smooths his sheets.
She reaches over him to hold the wrist of his other arm to
take his pulse. His eyes pop open.
EDIE
I think my grandfather had
those...?
A look of alienation and he turns away from her.
TY
Never mind.
An awkward beat, then -
EDIE
How’re you feeling?
TY
Better. How do I look?
EDIE
Less burned. Somehow.
TY
You’re new.
She nods. He considers her a moment - not in a predatory way,
but appreciative. Then closes his eyes to sleep.
JEROME
You’re a bad-ass nurse, doing the
doctor’s job too.
He notices her bitter expression.
JEROME (CONT'D)
Did I just offend you again?
EDIE
(shakes her head)
It’s just - I was going to be a
doctor and then - never mind.
She’s about to turn away when he reaches out with his chained
hand and touches her hand resting on the bed frame.
JEROME
You saved my life. You’re more than
my nurse. We’re sinyinyis.
(off her look)
Kindred. You’re part of my pack.
(He sees her soften)
Tell me.
EDIE
I dropped out of medical school to
look after my brother - he’s got
problems.
(admitting)
I freaked out on him a month ago.
He ran off.
(pulls out Jake’s photo)
Name’s Jake. Have you seen him
around? Around here?
Jerome pauses, hates that he can’t help. Shakes his head.
JEROME
I’m really sorry.
She puts it back into her pocket, disappointed.
EDIE
I don’t know if he’s ok, or -
Realizes she’s getting a little emotional - too much sharing.
JEROME
Oh, hey, woah.
She shuts down and removes her hand from his touch.
EDIE
It’s fine. Let’s prep you for
surgery.
Revision 48.
JEROME
I’m sorry about your bro, but
you’ll find him - you’ll make up.
(off her look)
You will. And as far as being my
nurse, you know your shit more than
the doc did.
She looks at him a beat - someone’s finally recognizing her.
EDIE
Sorry about before. I didn’t know
the silver in my scrubs would burn
you, because, well, I’ve never had
a Lycanthrope for a patient.
JEROME
How did you know it was
Interspection?
EDIE
“Intussusception.” It’s not
uncommon in canines. I had a dog
once who had it.
JEROME
I’m not a dog.
EDIE
I know - you’re some kind of big
bad wolf… with a jacked-up colon.
He smiles. Edie’s got a great bedside manner.
GINA (CONT'D)
Don’t.
GINA (CONT'D)
Christ.
Dr. Turnas, Gina and Chaz roll Matt in, hook up monitors.
GINA
Lycanthrope. Lung punctured - chest
stabbing.
DR. TURNAS
Is this street warfare shit of
theirs on the rise again?
CHAZ
Two Lycanthropes here during a full
moon.
GINA
From rival packs, no less. They’ll
be marking their territory on every
corner in the ward.
Chaz takes the just-removed bloody clothing and leaves.
JEROME
Can you loosen my restraints?
Revision 50.
SWIPE TO:
JAKE
Don’t leave me!
(then)
Don’t come back! You never cared
about me, Edie! Edie!
Edie runs out -- tears streaming down her face, we’re --
BACK TO:
JEROME
Edie, you ok? Restraints? I wanna
text Ma that I’m OK.
Matt’s on the table -- Gina and Dr. Turnas try stabilize him -
- he tosses about in pain -- not making it easy for them.
GINA
Sit still. We’re trying to help
your dumb ass.
Gina and Dr. Turnas swap concerned looks - he’s morphing into
his Lycanthrope state.
DR. TURNAS
Sedation! Now!
GINA
On it.
Gina turns and preps a needle as Dr. Turnas tries to snap
Matt’s hairy wrist into a restraint.
Matt rips his hand from Dr. Turnas and shoves her...
She stumbles back into Gina...
Revision 52.
ON GINA: On the floor, sits up, dizzy. She spots Dr. Turnas
splayed out unconscious on the floor. She looks up to see:
GINA
Oh, shit.
GINA (CONT'D)
Et secundum legem debet. Non est
hic homicidium. (Translation: You
must obey the law. There is no
killing here.)
A TRANQ GUN
On the other side of the room. She slowly pushes the gurney
around to make a barrier between her and the creature. Each
time she tries to go for the gun, he lunges at her.
Revision 53.
Jerome reaches through with his other arm and rips Matt in
half, splattering blood and chunks of flesh all over the room
and on a shocked Gina.
GINA (CONT'D)
Jerome. It’s me. Come back to me,
baby.
EDIE
He’ll kill everyone.
Edie looks from Gina to where the tranq gun hangs. Without
missing a beat, Edie grabs it and runs out -
INT. STAIRWELL
EDIE
(to the floor)
Everyone down.
EDIE (CONT'D)
Lock the door.
EDIE (CONT'D)
Hey!
With a trembling hand she aims the tranq gun and pulls the
trigger – and it locks! She can’t get a shot off.
He’s on her now and all she can do is SMACK him with the butt
of the gun -- he’s momentarily stunned.
CRYSTAL
What the fu -
EDIE
Just - run!
Edie runs at him with the gun, she’s gonna whack him with it
again, but he knocks her aside. She crashes into some medical
equipment, knocked-out.
CRYSTAL
Justanightmare. Justanightmare.
CRYSTAL
(whispers, in fear)
Edie?!
EDIE
Noooooo!
Edie moves fast. She grabs the tranq gun, hitting it on the
ground to try to un-jam it. Only one way to see if it works -
She FIRES – the tranq blasts out, hitting Jerome and he goes
down. Crystal falls onto him, unconscious.
EDIE (CONT'D)
Crystal!
Edie runs and drags Crystal away from him, checks Crystal’s
pulse, relief washes over her face.
Edie turns and notices blood pooling around Jerome. She looks
at him - blood’s gushing out of his torso.
It’s then she notices the spent gun shell from the gun on the
floor - there was a bullet in the tranq gun!
EDIE (CONT'D)
I need a crash cart!
EDIE
I’m sorry, Jerome. Come on, stay
with me. You’re gonna be fine.
(calling out)
I need help!
Jerome bleeds out and dies in her arms. Edie is soaked in his
blood. Devastation washes across her face. Her new friend is
dead, and she killed him.
EDIE (CONT'D)
I’m so sorry.
EDIE (CONT'D)
Gina, it was an accident.
EDIE (CONT'D)
There was a bullet in the tranq
gun!
CHAZ
Gina stop!
Shoves her fingers into Gina’s eyes. Gina screams out in pain
and rolls off Edie, covering her eyes with her hands.
Revision 58.
Chaz pulls Gina away from Edie, who struggles to breathe from
her near strangulation. Gina resists Chaz, but he restrains
her with a big hug.
CHAZ (CONT'D)
That’s enough. We have to go, the
Shadows are coming.
And then that tough facade she’s worked so hard to build over
the years crumbles like the Parthenon. She begins sobbing --
tears stream down her face. A beat and Edie looks up to see -
The Shadows are everywhere. They creep around the rest of the
floor – suspending anyone who saw the Lycanthrope attack.
Her pin glows and the Shadows retract, leaving Edie and
Morgan alone.
MORGAN (CONT'D)
Come.
Edie turns back for a glimpse at Crystal, who’s just come out
of the patient room, seemingly not sure why she was there.
Crystal shakes it off as a nurse grabs her attention.
NURSE
You ok? He didn’t bite you?
CRYSTAL
Who?
NURSE
A rabid dog got onto the floor.
Revision 60.
CRYSTAL
What?
(confused, maybe she
doesn’t remember)
Oh, yeah... I remember now.
Edie sees the look on Crystal’s face - confusion and fear.
Crystal pulls her sweater up and closes it tight around her
torso, unnerved. Edie closes the secret door.
We watch as the Shadows seep back into the woodwork, into the
darkness, as they...
Despite his matted hair, the dried blood and sweat on his
face, we clearly see this is JAKE, Edie’s brother she’s been
desperately searching for.
FADE OUT:
Jake screams over the darkness.
