CE 6013: Statistical Methods in Civil Engineering

Homework# 1

Problem: Collect any dataset and find the descriptive statistics of the dataset. Civil engineering
related time-series data is preferable. If time series data is not available, at least look for Civil
Engineering Relevant data. You may use the data that are already published in research articles.
Please mention the source of your data in any case. Specific Tasks:
i) Find the summary statistics of the dataset including mean, median, variance, standard
deviation, quartiles (q1, q2, q3), IQR, minimum, maximum, range among others.
ii) Draw following plots using the data.
a. Scatter plot
b. Box and Whisker plot
c. Time-sequence or time-series plot (if it is a time series data)
iii) Estimate the frequency of observations, plot histogram and cumulative frequency plot.
iv) Give a brief description of data (at least 5 sentences).

You may use any software or programming tools for the assessment.

Submission Method: An assignment will be created on Teams as “Homework 1” for

submission. You will be responsible for submitting your homework under the assigned
assignment. For submission, please prepare a single pdf file and name it as
“StudentNo_CE6013_HW1”. Uploading multiple files may result in deduction of marks.
