(1) (a)A researcher wishes to estimate the proportion of all dengue patients who come to
the hospitals in Gampaha. He takes a random sample of 540 patients of 20
hospitals in Gampaha district; and obtains an average of 196 dengue patients.

(i) What is the population of interest?

(ii)What is the parameter of interest?

(iii)What is the statistic involved?

b) The number of patients come to the hospital per day were recorded for the
month of December 2020. The results were as follows:

(i). Draw a frequency table for data by identifying appropriate class size.

(ii). Interpret the findings in a meaningful way.

2) a) Infants’ birth weights (in pounds) of smoking mothers were recorded as follows

65 72 68 64 60 55 73 71 52 64 61 74

67 74 50 54 75 67 62 66 80 64 65

(i) Find the range ,mode, median and mean.

(ii) Find Q1 and Q3.

(iii) Make a box-and-whisker plot of the data

(iv) Find the value of the inter-quartile range (IQR).

(v) What can you say about the shape of the distribution/ skewness

b)

Above figure shows a histogram of time taken to answer the 1st question for the
students in a school. Variable t which represent the time taken in minutes.
Complete the frequency table.

t 5-10 10-14 14-18 18-25 25-40

Frequency 10 16 24

Estimate the number of students who took longer than 20 minutes to answer 1st
(ii)
question.

(iii) Find an estimate of the mean time taken.

(iv) Find an estimate for the estimate for the standard deviation of t.

3). a) In a shoes manufacturing company, a shoe is given to three swing workers L, M

and N whose have the chances of complete the shoe are 3/7, 2/5, 4/9 respectively.
What is the probability that the shoe is completed?

b) Three bags contain 2 red, 5 black; 3 red, 4 black, and 5 red & 2 black balls
respectively. 1 of the bags is selected at random and a ball is drawn from it. If the
ball drawn is red, find the probability that it is drawn from the third bag.

c) The random variable X has the probability distribution shown.

x 1 2 3 4 5

𝑝(𝑋 = 𝑥) 7c 5c 4c 3c c

i) Use the fact that ∑ 𝑝(𝑋 = 𝑥) = 1 to find c.

ii) Calculate E(X).

4).a) A researcher knows that averages of 5 out of 16 bulbs are defective. A random
sample of 1200 bulbs is selected.

Find the probability that,

(i) Exactly 5% of bulbs are defective.

(ii) Greater than 50% of bulbs are defective.

b) Given the continuous random variable 𝑋 with the following probability
density function chart,

(i) Obtain the probability density function of X

(ii) Calculate the following probabilities

(A)(𝑋<1)

(B)(𝑋>0)

(C)(𝑋=1/4)

(D)(1/2≤𝑋≤3/2)

(iii)Calculate the cumulative density function(CDF) of X.
