QUESTION ONE (COMPULSORY) (30 MARKS)

a) Define the following terms

c) In a five day week, the probability that a student will be late for a class x days is given by

of detention in the school. What is the standard deviation of the number of hours a student is
detained in a week?

QUESTION FIVE (OPTIONAL) 20 MARKS

a) Two unbiased four sided dice have their faces marked 2, 4, 6 and 8 are tossed once. The
random variable X is the absolute value of the difference between the uppermost faces.
i) Obtain the probability distribution of X. (3 marks)
ii) Calculate the variance of X . (3 marks)

b) A box holds 8 red and 4 blue balls. Three balls are drawn from the box one after the other
without replacement.
i) Draw a tree diagram showing all the possible outcomes. (3 marks)
ii) Find the probability that at least two of the balls drawn are red. (3 marks)
iii) Given that the three balls drawn were of the same colour, what is the probability that
they were red. (4 marks)

c) The weekly expenditure of a female student in a college is sh. 520 while that of a male
counterpart is sh. 420. If the average spending of a student is sh.500, find the ratio of male to
female students in the college. (4 marks)
