Instructions to candidates:
Question 1
a) A local sports college lecturer selects a random sample of 56 students and the time spent in the
training centre, to the nearest hour, are recorded. The results are tabulated in the below table.
No of hours spent 1 – 10 11 – 20 21 – 25 26 – 30 31 – 40 41 – 60
Frequency 6 15 11 13 8 3
(i) Draw a histogram on a graph paper to illustrate the above data. (6 marks)
(iii) Calculate the estimated mean for the number of hours spent in the training centre. (2 marks)
(iv) Calculate the estimated standard deviation for the number of hours spent in the training centre.
(4 marks)
b) In a game, a marble is selected from a bag. The bag contains 5 red marbles and 7 blue marbles.
A marble is selected at random from the bag, the colour of the marble is noted.
When a red marble is selected, a biased dice with the probability 0.4 of getting ‘5’ is tossed.
When a blue marble is selected, a fair dice is tossed.
(i) Draw a complete tree diagram (including all the events and probability) to obtain ‘5’ or not ‘5’
from the game. (4 marks)
(ii) Find the probability that the fair dice is tossed and a ‘5’ is obtained. (2 marks)
(iii) Find the probability that a player obtain ‘5’ from a round of the game. (3 marks)
(iv) Given that the player does not obtain ‘5’, find the probability that the player obtained a blue
marble from the bag. (3 marks)
[25 marks]
Question 2
a) The probability distribution for discrete random variable X is as follow:
𝑐(𝑥 − 1) 𝑥 = 3, 5, 7
P(𝑋 = 𝑥) = { 𝑐𝑥 𝑥=9
0 otherwise
b) A manufacturer supplies umbrellas to retailers in batches of 25. From previous record, the
mean number of faulty umbrella from a batch is 2.
Let X represents the number of faulty umbrellas and p is the probability that the umbrella is
faulty.
Question 3
a) The heights, H, of a particular type of tree are modelled by normal distribution with mean 70
metres and standard deviation 5 metres.
(i) Find the probability that a randomly selected tree exceed the height of 66.5 metres.
(3 marks)
(ii) Find the value of c such that P(c < H < 84) = 0.8387. (4 marks)
(iii) A sample of 100 of this type of trees are selected randomly. Find the probability that between
65 to 70 (inclusive) of the trees will exceed the height of 66.5 metres. (6 marks)
b) The weights of 10 years old boys are normally distributed with a mean of 35 kg and a standard
deviation of 4 kg.
The weights of 10 years old girls are normally distributed with a mean of 38 kg and a standard
deviation of 8 kg.
(i) Find the probability that the total weight of 5 randomly chosen 10 years old boys is more than
180 kg. (4 marks)
(ii) Find the probability that the total weight of 3 randomly chosen 10 years old girls is less than
90 kg. (4 marks)
(iii) Find the probability that the weight of a randomly chosen 10 years old boy is less than ¾ times
of the weight of a randomly chosen 10 years old girl. (4 marks)
[25 marks]
Question 4
a) X, in RM, is representing the cost for water bill for a small manufacturing firm. The water bill
for 36 consecutive months were recorded and the results are summarised as follows.
∑ 𝑥 = 6030 ∑ 𝑥 2 = 1,010,970
(i) Find an unbiased estimates of mean for the cost for water bill. (2 marks)
(ii) Find an unbiased estimates of variance for the cost for water bill. (2 marks)
b) A statistical report shows that, on average, an employee spend 60 minutes on social media
during working hours. The human resource manager of a manufacturing company believes that
the employees spend more time on average on social media during working time. Hence, the
total time spent, X, in minutes, on social media by 100 randomly chosen employees are
recorded and the results are summarised as follow:
∑ 𝑥 = 6300 ∑ 𝑥 2 = 398,088
FORMULAE

If Z has a normal distribution with mean 0 and variance 1, then for each value of p, the table gives
the value of z such that
P(Z ≤ z) = p.
