I. INTRODUCTION
The fuel oil system for a diesel engine can be considered in two parts—
the fuel supply and the fuel injection systems. Fuel supply deals with the provision
of fuel oil suitable for use by the injection system.

SYSTEM

V. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A slow-speed two-stroke diesel is usually arranged to operate continuously on
heavy fuel and have available a diesel oil supply for maneuvering conditions. The oil is
stored in tanks in the double bottom from which it is pumped to a settling tank and heated.
After passing through centrifuges the cleaned, heated oil is pumped to a daily service tank.
From the daily service tank the oil flows through a three-way valve to a mixing tank. A
flow meter is fitted into the system to indicate fuel consumption. Booster pumps are used
to pump the oil through heaters and a viscosity regulator to the engine-driven fuel pumps.
The fuel pumps will discharge high-pressure fuel to their respective injectors.
The viscosity regulator controls the fuel oil temperature in order to
provide the correct viscosity for combustion. A pressure regulating valve ensures
a constant-pressure supply to the engine-driven pumps, and a pre-warming bypass
is used to heat up the fuel before starting the engine. A diesel oil daily service
tank may be installed and is connected to the system via a three-way valve. The
engine can be started up and manoeuvred on diesel oil or even a blend of diesel
and heavy fuel oil. The mixing tank is used to collect recirculated oil and also acts
as a buffer or reserve tank as it will supply fuel when the daily service tank is
empty.

8.9 MDO Service Tank

Based on the engine project guide, two service tanks for HFO are to be provided,
each with a capacity sufficient for at least 4 hours operation at maximum fuel
consumption. Then based on the calculation above, the capacity of the service
tank will be:

 BHPME : BHP of the main engine from the catalogue (kW)
 SFOC : Specific fuel oil consumption of the main engine (g/kWh)

8.12 HFO Storage Tank Heater

Storage tank need to be heated to keep fuel temperature above pour point (~10 OC).
Therefore the fuel can be moved by pump; else if the fuel temperature goes below
pour point it will cause it to cannot be pumped.

HFO pour point = 40OC

Ambient Temperature = 25 OC

∆ T =( HFO Pour Point +10 ℃− Ambient Temperature )

∆ T =( 40+10 ℃−25 )
∆ T =25 ℃

After we get temperature difference we need to find power needed to heat the fuel

We make the selection of final heater based on the project guide.

In order to heat the HFO to the proper viscosity before the injection valves (12±2 cSt),
the oil is led through a preheater. The temperature of the HFO is regulated by an
automatic viscosity control unit to 85-150 °C (depending on the viscosity).

Based on the minimum temperature of the oil from the HFO service tank to be 60 °C
and because the fuel must be heated to temperatures indicated in the table below
(corresponding to a viscosity of 12±2 cSt plus an addition of 5°C to compensate for
heat loss before injection) the capacity of the preheater in kW should be minimum:
The above capacities include a safety margin of 15% but the necessary capacity
depends on the actual fuel and condition. We will be pleased to carry out calculations
for a specific condition on request.
