OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
1. Define quartiles;
2. Identify the formula to be used and use it in calculating quartiles
3. Apply the interpolation method; and
4. Apply the idea of percentile in real life situation
III.PROCEDURES
A. Activity
Strike a Pose!
Mechanics:
1. The class will be divided into two groups
2. The teacher will project poses from famous groups
3. The learners must copy the position showed to them by the teacher
4. The group with the most flawless and perfect copy wins a point

D. Abstraction
Quartiles are the three score points that divides the distribution into four equal
parts
k
Q k = (n+1)
4
Where:
k is the position
n is the total number of observations
Steps in finding Qk
1. Arrange the data from lowest to highest
2. Apply the formula
Example 1
Let’s Do This
Directions: Find the quartiles of the given distribution
A group of students obtained the following scores in their 10-Item Math quiz:
8, 5, 2, 4, 8, 5, 7, 1, 3, 6, 9
Q1 Q2 Q3
Lower Median Upper
Quartile Quartile
Q1, first quartile 3 is obtained by finding the middle value of the first half
of the given
Q2, second quartile 5 is obtained by finding the middle value of the
sequence. It is also equal to the median
Q3, third quartile 8 is obtained by getting the middle value of the second
half
Example 2
What about this?
Directions: Try these example, find Q1,Q2 and Q3
Interpolation
When Qk is a decimal number, we use Interpolation to find the exact value of Qk
Steps of Interpolation
1. Subtract the two data that encompasses the solved kth position
2. Multiply the result from step 1 by the decimal part obtained from the kth
position
3. Add the result in step 2 to the second or smaller number
E. Application
Activity 1
Pair Share
Directions: Read, analyze and solve the problem below.
1. 290, 260, 430, 370, 180. Solve for Q1, Q2, Q3 and IQR
2. The owner of the coffee shop recorded the number of customers who came into his
café each hour in a day. The results were: 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10 and 11.
Find the lower quartile, median, upper quartile and IQR of the data.
3. The lower quartile of the data set is the 6th data value. How many data values are
there in a data set?
4. The lower quartile of the data set is the 8th data value. How many values are there
in the data sets?
Activity 2
Solve me
Directions: Solve for Q1, Q2, Q3 of the given data below.
Given are the scores of 10 students in their mathematics activity: 4, 9, 7, 14, 10,
8, 12, 15, 6 and 11
IV. EVALUATION
