QUARTILES FOR UNGROUPED DATA
Measures of Position
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:

•Illustrate the quartiles for ungrouped data;

•Calculate the lower quartile, middle quartile and upper quartile
of a set of data; and
•Solve problems on quartiles for ungrouped data using
Mendehall and Sincich method.
GROUP ACTIVITY: Watch This!
a. You are the fourth tallest student in a group of 10.
If you are the 4th tallest student, therefore 6 students are shorter
than you.
GROUP ACTIVITY: Watch This!

It also means that 60% of the students are shorter than you. If you are the 8th tallest student
in a group of 10, how many percent of the students are shorter than you?

b. A group of students obtained the following scores in their
statistics quiz:
8, 2, 5, 4, 8, 5, 7, 1, 3, 6, 9
First, arrange the scores in ascending order.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9

GROUP ACTIVITY: Watch This!
Observe how the lower quartile (Q1), middle quartile (Q2), and upper quartile (Q3) of the
scores are obtained. Complete the statements below:

• Observe the position of 3 from 1 to 5

The first quartile 3 is obtained by ________________________________________.

• Observe the position of 5 from 1 to 9

The second quartile 5 is obtained by ______________________________________.

• Observe the position of 8 from 6 to 9

The third quartile 8 is obtained by ________________________________________.

c. The scores of 10 students in a mathematics seatwork are:
7, 4, 8, 9, 3, 6, 7, 4, 5, 8
First, arrange the scores in ascending order.
3 , 4 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 7 , 8 , 8 , 9

GROUP ACTIVITY: Watch This!
Discuss with your groupmates:
•We observe that quartile
________________________________________________________.
•To obtain each value, we have to
________________________________________________________.
•Regarding our observations, we can say that
________________________________________________________.
THE QUARTILE FOR UNGROUPED DATA
The quartiles are the score points which divide a distribution into
four equal parts. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the distribution are
below the first quartile, fifty (50%) are below the second quartile,
and seventy-five percent (75%) are below the third quartile.

Q1 Q2 Q3
THE QUARTILE FOR UNGROUPED DATA

Q1 Q2 Q3

•25% of the data has a value ≤ Q1

•50% of the data has a value ≤ X or Q 2

•75% of the data has a value ≤ Q3

MENDENHALL AND SINCICH METHOD

We have the data {7, 21, 7, 16, 27, 1, 30, 3, 31}.

Find the first quartile (Q1), second quartile (Q2), and the
third quartile (Q3).
MENDENHALL AND SINCICH METHOD
•Lower quartile (L) = position of Q 1 = (n+1)
If L falls halfway between two integers, round up.

•Upper quartile (U) = position of Q 3 = (n+1)

If L falls halfway between two integers, round up.
GROUP ACTIVITY
1. The owner of a coffee shop recorded the
number of customers who came into his
café each hour a day. The results were 14,
10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and 11. Find
the lower quartile and upper quartile of
the data.
GROUP ACTIVITY
2. Find the first quartile (Q1), second quartile
(Q2), and the third quartile (Q3), given the
scores 10 students in their mathematics
activity using Mendenhall and Sincich method;
4, 9, 7, 14, 10, 8, 12, 15, 6, 11.
GROUP ACTIVITY
3. Given the scores of 11 students in their
science project determine the first quartile
(Q1), second quartile (Q2), and the third
quartile (Q3).
{25, 18, 30, 8, 15, 5, 10, 35, 40, 43, 45}
GROUP ACTIVITY
4. Albert has an assignment to ask at random 10
students in their school about their ages. The data
are givenName
in the table Age
below. Name Age
Ana 10 Tony 11
Ira 13 Lito 14
Susan 14 Christian 13
Antonette 13 Michael 15
Gladys 15 Dennis 12
GROUP ACTIVITY
5. Aqua running has been promoted as method for cardiovascular
conditioning for the injured athlete. A study reported in the journal of
sports medicine investigated the relationship between exercise
cadence and heart rate by measuring the heart rates of 12 healthy
volunteers. The data are listed below:
87 79 80 96 95 90 92 96 98 91 94 98

Find the lower and upper quartiles of the data.
