12 TEACHER PAT : At this point, you are about to learn the Center-Radius of the
13 : Equation of a Circle.
14 SNEAK-IN SFX SWOOSH
15 : The standard form also known as Center-Radius form of the
16 : circle equation is in the format (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2, with
17 : the center being at the point (h, k) and the radius of r units.
18 : The values of h and k indicate that the circle is translated h
19 : units horizontally and k units vertically form the origin.
20 TEACHER PAT : There are two cases on how to find the equation of a circle
21 : where in center and radius are given.

2 : The first case is the equation of a circle centered at the origin
3 : If the center of the circle is at the origin of the coordinate
4 : plane, the equation is x2 + y2 = r2 where r is the radius.
5 : Let us now study the examples presented.
6 TEACHER PAT : Let us write the center-radius form of the equation of a circle
7 : given the center at the origin and the radius 2 units. There
8 : are two steps to follow in writing the equation. First, let us
9 : identify the center coordinates and the radius. Since the
10 : center is at the origin then we have (0, 0). Next, let us
11 : substitute the center coordinates and radius into the center-
12 : radius form (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2, then we will have
13 : (x – (0))2 + (y – (0))2 = (2)2. To simplify, we can get x2 + y2 = 4.

15 TEACHER PAT : The second case is the equation of a circle at the point (h, k).
16 : When the center of the circle is at the point (h,k), the
17 : equation becomes (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2.
18 : Let us now study the examples presented.
19 SNEAK-IN SFX SWOOSH
20 TEACHER PAT : Now, let us write the center-radius form of the equation of a
21 : circle given the circle with a center (4, 2) and a radius of 4

2 : First, let us identify the center coordinates and the radius.
3 : We have center (4, 2) and radius 4 units. Next, let us
4 : substitute the center coordinates and radius into the center-
5 : radius form (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2, then we will have
6 : (x – (4))2 + (y – (2))2 = (4)2. To simplify, we can get
7 : (x – 4)2 + (y – 2)2 = 16.

9 TEACHER PAT : Are you still with me?
10 : At this moment, let us proceed to the general equation of a
11 : circle.
12 SNEAK-IN SFX SWOOSH
13 : Circle equations are often found in the general form of
14 : Ax2 + By2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0, where C, D, and E are constant.
15 : There are two steps in converting the center-radius form
16 : (standard form) into the general form equation of a circle. For
17 : example, given the expression (x + 2)2 + (y – 1)2 = 81, we have
18 TEACHER PAT : to first multiply out the center-radius form to obtain the
19 : general form of the equation then we obtain
20 : (x2 + 4x + 4) + (y2 – 2y + 1) = 81. Next, we have to transform
21 : the equation in general form so we will have
