Quarterly Industry Brief – Quarter 3/ 2017

In quarter 3 of 2017, mobile phone importers of Bangladesh imported 9.6 million

mobile handsets. 7.3 million of them are feature phones, while 2.3 million are smart
phones. Feature phone and smart phone ratios are 76% and 24% respectively.

Total market price of imported handsets is $297 million. Only 30% of this amount
accounts for feature phones, and 70% accounts for smart phones.

In terms of number, the domestic market is dominated by Symphony, Walton, Itel, and
Samsung. However, in amount, market leaders are Samsung, Symphony, Huawei, and
Oppo.

In quarter three, 17 smart phone brands were active in the market, while as many as
53 feature phone brands were present. This is notable that out of the 53 brands, only 2
are global brands.

2017 Quarter 3 import increased by 14% from 2016 Quarter 3 imports. From January
to September 2017, total 27.6 million handsets have been imported through legal
channel.
