The Youth Club of Strathmore is moving
forward with its programs now that the
School year has begun. Because of this,
the organization is looking for people to
volunteer to be a part of the local board.
We are hoping to fnd energetic people
who care about the youth of Strathmore,
so that we, as a board, can plan programs
for the youth, said Pat Fule, in an e-mail.
Our Board meetings are the frst Thurs-
day of each month, at 4 p.m. Also, we are
looking for a person who may be willing
to volunteer to be our program coordina-
tor.
Lastly, we are hoping to fnd a person
who would be willing to be our volunteer
coordinator, helping to fnd secure, need-
ed, volunteers to run the various Youth
Club programs.
Ryan Tongs, Chair at Youth Club of
Strathmore, said there are approximately
seven board members at this time. The
program coordinator and volunteer co-
ordinator are the two critical positions,
which need to be flled quickly.
Basically ensuring that the programs
are working, the programs are getting
scheduled. Basically supervising the op-
erations of the programming, said Tongs,
of the program coordinator role.
The volunteer coordinator would have
similar duties but would clearly focus on
volunteers. Meanwhile, the Program Co-
ordinator position will expand over time
and become a paid position once they
have the funding in place.
Tongs said the level of commitment
the Youth Club would be looking for
from these new roles shouldnt exceed
10 hours a week, as much of the legwork
has already been done to get things into
place.
Theres a group of board members that
have just done a fantastic job of getting
the programming going, said Tongs.
Anyone interested in one of the posi-
tions can call the Youth Club of Strath-
more at 403-324-4521. All applicants must
meet all of the clubs policies.

Brentwood Elementary student Samantha Walstra and her
family are staying active and healthy, while helping out char-
ities and organizations that are important to them.
Dave Walstra, Samanthas dad, works at G&S Airport Con-
veyor, and in an attempt to promote healthy and active life-
styles, the company offers a bonus to everyone who signs up
and completes the Scotiabank Marathon in May.
For everyone who crosses the fnish line, they are given
$200 to donate to a charity of their choice. This year Saman-
tha and her family chose Brentwood schools music program.
Samantha, her brother Josh, her dad and her mom Tracy,
who is also a teacher assistant at Brentwood, all took part in
the marathon, raising $800 for the school.
Its really cool because I really like school, and I have
been here for six years. Ive been here since kindergarten,
said Samantha.
Music is important to Samantha and after deciding where
she wanted her money to go, the rest of her family pooled
their money with hers.
The Town of Strathmore also gave the music program
$100 after the kids sang O Canada at the Canada Day cel-
ebrations.
Brentwoods music teacher, Carolyn Steeves, went shop-
ping with the $900.
Thanks to the money raised and donated to the music
program, Steeves was able to buy six new guitars and 10
new guitar cases.
This year Grade 5s are going to be playing guitars and
I think for the older students it would be better because
theres not enough guitars for everybody, so I think it would
be better to get guitars for them, said Samantha.
Last year she had donated her money to Paws, and said
she doesnt know which organization or charity she will
pick next year.

Bear Facts
Hibernation is a dormant sleep-like state.
By going into hibernation, bears bypass
winter when their food supply disappears.
Animals like the bear would fnd it ex-
tremely diffcult to fnd enough food during
winter, and therefore go into hibernation.
A bears body goes through several chang-
es once it enters hibernation. Its heartbeat
drops from ffty-fve beats per minute to
ten beats per minute, and the bears body
temperature will drop from fve to nine
degrees below normal.
Samantha Walstra, centre blonde hair, was surrounded by fellow band mates,
who showed off the new guitars and cases which the Walstra family helped
the school buy, by donating to the music program.

During the Happy Gangs meeting on
Sept. 13, Gail Galusha was pleased to
present Shirley Farand with a bronze
medal from the Alberta 55 Plus sum-
mer games.
Farand won the medal for an afghan
that she crocheted and entered into
the visual arts and crafts section.
The competition was very stiff in
Fairview, and it wasnt only just for
crocheting, it was all arts and crafts,
said Galusha.
The 55 Plus summer and winter
games are a mix of sports, competition
and fun, and there are a wide variety
of activities in which people can com-
pete. Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks
and Wildlife Foundation sponsor the
event.
Some of the activities include alpine
skiing, carpet bowling, creative writ-
ing, slo-pitch, Scrabble and tennis.
Farand had heard about the games
earlier this year and decided it was
something she wanted to be involved
in.
Gail was at the meeting and she
spoke about the summer games, I got
interested and I just thought it would
be fun. Theres so many different
things you can get into, it wasnt just
one thing, you could go into so many
different things, said Farand.
I think its a really good organiza-
tion, I wish there were more people
interested. Im proud to have won, Im
glad to have entered something.
Next year, the Canada Games will be
held in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The
Canada games and the Alberta 55 Plus
alternate every year.
Galusha attended her frst games in
Whitehorse and has been hooked ever
since.
Im just a junkie for going to the
games. This is the frst time I didnt get
a medal but it doesnt matter to me. To
me its more important (the) camara-
derie, said Galusha.
For me, every two years that I go

The Strathmore Hand in

fcially re-opened its doors
on Sept. 17. The Strathmore
Parent Link is connected
with the Aspen Family and

ety from Calgary.
Its a program run by
the government of Alberta.
They started it so that each
region would run their
own, and all the programs
are at no cost to parents,
said Betty Lepps, manager
for Strathmore.
Lepps said they work with
Alberta Health to bring in
guest speakers on a variety
of topics about childcare
and health.
We do programming for
families zero to six, and
(its) parents and children
together. Its not a daycare
or anything, said Jeanette
MacKay, one of the parent
coaches.
Occasionally there will
also be parent education
workshops during which
daycare is provided, but
most of the time the focus
is on parent and child.
The idea behind the cen-
tre is to offer support to
families. The parent coach-
es are able to provide in-
formation, referrals, devel-
opmental screening and
parenting classes. Mackay
said just about any infor-
mation to do with parent-

centre.

Studies have proven time
and again that breakfast is
an essential part of every-
ones day, especially for
school-aged children to be
able to learn at their maxi-
mum potential.
This will be the second full
school year that Hope Cov-
enant Community Church
has provided breakfast to
fve schools in Strathmore
through the School Fuel
program.
I dont know if our church
approached the schools, or
if the schools approached
our church saying that
some kids are having a hard
time concentrating and just
doing well because they are
hungry and so they asked if
perhaps we could provide
breakfast, said Lynn Wahl,
one of the volunteers from
the church.
Every morning from 8:15
a.m. to 8:50 a.m. volunteers
can be found at Westmount
Elementary, Brentwood El-
ementary and Wheatland El-
ementary, serving breakfast
to the students. They also
provide food to Crowther
Memorial Junior High and
the anchor program.
In March and April we
were feeding about 200
per day (between all of the
schools), said Wahl.
As long as kids need it,
its a privilege to provide it.
So hopefully well be there
for them.
One way the program has
been able to keep running
is through donations and
corporate support. Hope
Church also received a grant
from the United Way this
year to purchase necessary
supplies, and one of the big-
gest supporters is Sobeys.
Its a good community
initiative which started in
the grassroots. I give total
respect and credit to the
people that have started this
program, said Neil Ken-

want a little more. Natasha is a volunteer from Hope Community Church,
she doesnt have kids that go to Westmount, she just does it because it is

This year not only marked
the 100th birthday of the
town and a number of other
organizations and groups,
but it also marked the an-
niversary of the Strathmore
Masonic Lodge 53. On Sept.
17 there was a re-consecra-
tion ceremony performed at
the Civic Centre, which was
headed by Alberts grand
master, Peter Dunlop.
Its just like a centennial
celebration, just celebrating
100 years. Its not 100 years
since the frst meeting which
I think was held in May the
previous year, said Geoff
Scott, Secretary and Treasur-
er of Lodge 53.
Though the frst initial
meeting was held 101 years
ago, the Strathmore Lodge
did not become a chartered,
certifed member until al-
most a year later.
In order to have a Lodge
opened there must be a min-
imum of seven members. To
date there are 48 members
in the Strathmore Lodge.
Like all organizations Li-
ons whatever numbers di-
minish because young guys
really dont have enough
time. As far as membership
we do not solicit member-
ships, members have to ask
to join, said Scott.
He said the theory behind
that is that interested men
will see these guys out in the
community living full and
productive lives, and want
to copy or emulate it and
fnd out how to go about it.
When an application is made
a committee is formed to in-
terview the applicant.
In May of 2012 Ill have
been a member for 60 years,
said John Scheer, former
Worshipful Master.
Though the Lodge may not
solicit new members, there
can be hints. Scheer had an
uncle gave subtle little hints
to him. He had resisted for a
few years, before fnally de-
ciding to join. For Scott, he
had reached a point in his
life when he had the time to
commit to joining.
I had a grandfather whod
been a master of a couple
of Lodges inAustralia. I
had reached a point in time
where I (could) lift my nose
from the grindstone a little
bit, and see other aspects
of life, and John was a good
friend at the time, said Scott,
who joined in 1972.
Glen Sollid joined the Ma-
sons in 1987.
I was gearing down to re-
tirement from teaching, I had
three or four years left to go.
I thought I may as well look
into something that could
give me a little bit of some-
thing to do when I dont
have to chase kids anymore.
I mentioned it to a friend of
mine who was also a Mason
and Shriner. I was processed
very quickly and handed a
whole lot of things, and all
of a sudden I could fnd my-
self almost being swamped
so I had to step back from
too much involvement, said
Sollid.
Another thing Scott made
sure to pint out is that Ma-
sonry is not a cult.
Theres enough there to
say, oh do they do that? But
then its just a good story af-
ter that. Theres always just
a bit of a grain of something
but not enough to favour a
whole meal, said Sollid.
In early 1910 a small
group of men met in the
small North West Mount-
ed Police Offce to discuss
forming a Masonic Lodge
in Strathmore. Meetings be-
gan on May 16, 1910, and in
1913 the Lodge purchased
the Opera House. The up-
per foor was used for meet-
ings, and the ground foor
was rented out as a commu-
nity hall. In July of 1924 a
fre burned down a number
of businesses, as well as the
Masons hall, destroying all
records, charters and prop-
erty.
The Masons bought the
Knox Presbyterian Church,
where they stayed until the
property was sold and de-
molished in 2005, when it
became apparent renova-
tions would be quite costly.
The Strathmore Lodge was
a Moon Lodge, meaning
its meetings were held the
Monday closest to the full
moon. With country trails
poorly marked and hazard-
ous, the full moons bright
light enabled Brethren to
navigate safely. By 1921,
district roads had improved
to a point where the meet-
ing night was set as the frst
Monday of the month.
Currently the Lodge is
holding meetings in Irricana,
and hopes to fnd a home
again soon.

Wi-Fi
Connection
Falsely
Claims To
Be RCMP
Two recent incidents
have surfaced in the
Calgary area involving
homeowners who have a
Wi-Fi router, noticing an
unauthorized computer
connection, which
identifed itself as RCMP
Surveillance
The owners contacted
the RCMP directly and were
assured that the computer,
which had made the Wi-Fi
connection, was in no way
an RCMP computer.
One individual had
noticed a car in an
open feld area near his
residence, and when he
subsequently logged into
his computer he discovered
that a connection had
been made to his internet
through his Wi-Fi and it had
been identifed as RCMP
Surveillance.
The RCMP do not use
Wi-Fi for security reasons
and if anyone detects any
computer accessing their
Wi-Fi, whether named
with any form of RCMP
or not, should shut their
system down immediately
as that computer may be
attempting to access the
internet for malicious or
illegal purposes. This
could include such areas as
child pornography, internet
scams and computer
hijacking.
It is vitally important
that those who use a
Wi-Fi router to realize that
anyone within a limited area
surrounding that router
could access the Wi-Fi
unless the security settings
have been completely
enabled. This includes
setting passwords, limiting
computer access to specifc
authorized computers and
restricting the broadcast of
the Wi-Fi name itself so only
authorized users are able to
sign onto the system.
If anyone feels their
computer systems may
have been compromised by
an unauthorized computer,
then they should check
with their internet service
provider. If illegal activity
is detected then please
contact your local law
enforcement agency.

amount of cash.
If anyone has any information regarding this matter please
contact Strathmore RCMP detachment at 403-934-3968 or Crime

were traveling East on Township 221 when the collision occurred.
The 28-year-old operator of the motorcycle received serious,

Strathmore has never seen a bridal show quite
like this before. On Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. until 4
p.m., the Strathmore Centennial Civic Centre will
be transformed into a amke-believe wedding re-
ception, a different take on your average trade
show.
The Strathmore Bridal Show is being presented
by Studio B Events, a business which provides ser-
vice in wedding and event planning.
A lot of people have had positive feedback for
it. I really wanted to show a different style of wed-
dings rather than what people see normally, so
that was my main aspect, said Amanda Bazant, the
wedding and event designer of Studio B Events.
Main events include a fashion show which be-
gins at 11 a.m. and a second show at 10 p.m. All
bridal and bridesmaid dresses are courtesy of Sun-
shine Bridal and Sew Delicious; models of all sizes
will be fashioning the many dresses.
As well, many door prizes will be available, the
largest prize being a three month lease on a new
Ford Fiesta, courtesy of Byron Smith Ford. Smaller
prizes include a month of wedding co-ordinations
from Studio B Events, and a special gift from Home
Hardware.
The Centre will also be flled with vendors that
focus on hair, makeup, jewellery, and facial prod-
ucts.
No matter what it is, whether its a wedding
or a corporate party, its not really focused just to
brides, anyone can come, any woman will enjoy
this, said Bazant.
Within the last month, Bazant feels that the show
has fnally been coming together. She gives kudos
to DJ Split Circuit Sound putting together the mu-
sic and lighting for the fashion show, as well as the
entire event.
Ive done trade shows in the past, but some-
thing to this scale, its a bigger thing that Ive done
in a long time. Its really neat to see it all come to
together, said Bazant.
Bazant is hopeful and expects over 200 to attend
the event. Courtesy of Weddings in Alberta, the frst
200 to attend will receive a free wedding magazine.
Its just a unique event that will show newly
engaged couples a different twist on their wed-
ding. Its a different event than what weve seen,
said Bazant.
Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. More
information about the Bridal Show and Studio B
Events can be found at www.studio-b-events.com.

Strathmore Town Councillor John
Rempel picked his choice for Citizen of
the Month for September. Rempel nomi-
nated Roger Nelson.
I dont remember when I frst met
Roger, but it was a long time ago. Roger
is an ex-councillor, ex-school teacher,
dedicated parent and a valued volun-
teer, said Rempel.
I worked with Roger on town coun-
cil for seven years. Roger is without a
doubt the hardest working councillor I
ever worked with. Roger was a tireless
motivator and a true ambassador for the
Town of Strathmore.
Rempel said it was an appreciation for
what Nelson has done for the communi-
ty that helped him decide on his choice
for Citizen of the Month.
Nelson was a member of council for
15 years. He was also principal of Strath-
more Storefront School, Principal of Clu-
ny Bow Valley when it was still open,
and Vice-Principal of the Strathmore
Youth Development Centre. Nelson was
surprised when Rempel said he was be-
ing nominated at Citizen of the Month.
He actually came over the day before
the council meeting, and had talked to
me and asked me if it would be okay,
and I thought it was an honour. I had
served with John, I think it started with
the second council I was on, said Nel-
son.
Its always nice to be recognized by

your peers, (for) the things youve done.
Nelson retired this past June and said
though he may not be going to work
from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. anymore, he has
found many things fll a day.
Prior to retirement I had taken a
three year program, and (a year ago
in October) I was ordained a deacon.
I spend most of my time now doing
church work, said Nelson.
A deacon is originally a person who
gets involved in service in the commu-
nity. That was one of the things I was
looking at because, I could continue a
lot of the things I had done before in-
side a formal setting type of thing. There
are times its a lot of work, its complete-
ly a volunteer position.
While he spends a good portion of his
time doing church work, he also does
substitute teaching when needed. When
he is not doing either of those, Nelson
is trying to fx up his house and do all
of the things he wasnt able to do with
a full time job.

The new rural addressing signs are
now being placed all over the county.
Workers installing the signs will be go-
ing west to east in the county. The new
address system will help EMS, utility
companies, couriers and other visitors
fnd residences easier. Currently EMS
is sent to a quarter section of land and
from there they try to fnd a particular
house. Once all of the new address signs
are added to GPS, EMS will be able to re-
spond to the scene of an emergency fast-
er. All parcels of land within the county,
which support a structure with primary
access on a public road, will be assigned
a rural address by the county. The ad-
dress signs will be perpendicular to the
roadway and parallel to the driveway.
Global TraininG road
The traffc assessment for the Global
Training Centre road has been complet-
ed and Wheatland County Council has
decided to implement the recommenda-
tions. The speed limit on the road will be
80 km/h and will drop to 60 km/h near
Global Training Centre. There will also
be signs stating there is a hidden drive-
way by the Centre, and the county was
told to look at brushing to try to increase
visibility.

Every woman can use a ladies night

Women is trying to promote with the

Sept. 28
Women can gather together to lis-
ten to an inspirational speaker, while
enjoying good company and network-
ing.
Its going to be an engaging eve-
ning, and the topic is going to be
transitions, because we fnd right now
a lot of people we talk to are in the
midst of transition. It seemed very
appropriate, and were very excited
about the speaker Phoebe Fung com-
ing out, said Marcy Field with Wheat-
land Business Women.
A group of women from Wheatland
Business Women attended the Alberta
Women Entrepreneurs conference this
past spring. Fung was on one of the
panels and when the women heard
her speak they knew she was perfect
for this years event.
I think she has a message that re-
ally appeals to women whatever stage
of life theyre in. We go through all
kinds of transitions in our lives, said
Field.
Fung is the owner of the Vin Room
in Calgary, which has won numerous
awards including one of the top 50
fastest growing companies.
Fung spent 15 years working in the
oil and gas industry before taking a
year off to travel and explore differ-
ent interests. During that time she dis-
covered how much she likes food and
wine.
So I chose to start a wine bar. Go-
ing from corporate to an entrepreneur
is a big transition in itself, said Fung.
Im going to be talking about the
journey and women especially, actu-
ally people in general, they change
their careers three to four times in a
lifetime, so this is becoming more and
more common.
She said one of the thrills for her in
doing this with her professional life,
was because she entered into a busi-
ness she had no background in, and
into a completely different industry
from her previous one
Its turned out to be the best thing
thats happened to me in my life, said
Fung.

Strathmore Handi BuS update
The Strathmore Handi Bus has been very busy, serving 1641 clients since
Jan. 1, 2011. The Board has completed reviewing the policies and with
the help of our community donations and the recent donation of $25,000.00
from the Wheatland County, and the improved operations management,
we have changed from having a fnancial shortfall to meeting our immedi-
ate expenses. We feel that it is possible to meet the demands of our ever
growing population with a few more changes. One of the changes needed
is the increase of bus rates, which have not been reviewed for many years
and have fallen well below our cost of service. As of September 30, 2011
the rates will increase to the following:
in Strathmore Rates [return trip]
Social trips for all approved clients - $10.00 each
Medical Trips for all approved clients - $7.00 each

Out of Town Rates per km rate
Large Bus-Social Trips - $3.50/km
Medical Trips - $1.00/km
Van- Social and Medical Trips - $0.50/km
Trip from Strathmore to Calgary for Clients with medical appointments
will cost $55.00. The Strathmore Social Groups going to Calgary using the
large bus will pay $385.00 for a 6 hour booking[from the time of pick up
to the time of drop off]. Anything over the 6 hour duration will result in an
overtime cost of an additional $50.00/hour.
These rates will be reviewed regularly and be upgraded as necessary at
the beginning of each new year.
Strathmore Handi-Bus is regulated through the Provincial Operating
authority which permits the transport of handi-capped persons and
seniors 65 years and older. Our apologies to those who do not meet these
requirements.
The Board is constantly struggling to balance our service as personal,
unique and affordable to those who truly rely on this type of service with
our increases of expenses. Your full support and understanding is needed
and appreciated so the Handi-Bus Association can maximize the funding
they receive and minimize any cuts to the service.

Summer is coming to a close, meaning school
is just starting to swing into full action. There is
one thing; however, that separates this year from
any other. For many years, the school has had TA
(Teacher Adviser), or D.E.A.R (Drop Everything
And Read), where students would read quietly for
three out of fve days of the week, and were able
to do homework during TA.
This is the beginning of a new era for the high
school. The administration changed D.E.A.R and
TA to learning strategies or study hall, which al-
lows the students to go to their teachers to either
catch up on missed work, or get help with the
things they are struggling with. In many ways it is
a very useful class, but to some of the students, its
a waste of time. For the students that fnish their

work in class and have nothing else to do, they sit
and read for the half an hour of learning strategies,
while everyone else works busily on their work.

The third new award is the 2011 Em-
ployer of Choice Awards. The award is
for the company which shows excel-
lence in its approach to workforce de-
velopment.
The Chamber is delighted to an-
nounce another award to recognize suc-
cess and innovation in our local business
community, said Chamber President
Steve Jeffrey in a press release.
We look forward to celebrating the
efforts made by area businesses to at-
tract and retain employees. The accom-
plishments of local businesses are now
recognized through eight awards being
presented this year.
There will also be a Chamber Busi-
ness of the Year, where members will be
recognizing one of their own, who has
been active and engaged with the cham-
ber and the projects they are doing with
community, and economic development
in the town.
We thought theres some really neat
things happening in town, and it was a
great opportunity to move forward and
to recognize more of the businesses,
said Field.
And to make people more aware of
some of the great work and hard work
that goes on by some of the business
owners in town.
One of the other awards include Busi-
ness of the Year, honouring one business
in each level from small, medium and
large businesses.
The Awards ceremony will be held
Oct. 20, and once again people in atten-
dance will have a chance to pick who
they think should win the Emerging En-
trepreneur award. Unfortunately nomi-
nations are already closed for this award.
The deadline for the remaining nomi-
nations is Sept. 30, and though the busi-
ness does not need to be a chamber
member, it must be in Strathmore and
the surrounding area.
Full Awards criteria and the nomina-
tion form are available at The Chamber
offce at 205 3rd Avenue, Strathmore
or can be viewed on-line at www.strath-
moredistrictchamber.com.

Students trek through Kananaskis Country
Manny everett
Times Contributor
A tradition begun at Rockyford School
is continuing in Standard as teacher
Steve Wiewel took students on a camp
and hike in Kanaskis Country last week.
Over the last ten years, Wiewel started
off the school year for Rockyford stu-
dents in Grades 5-9 with a four-day fall
camp.
It quickly grew into a community
event with many parents travelling
with the students to enjoy camping and
bonding with the various families that
attended. Parents brought their trailers
while the kids and teachers camped in
tents.
When Wiewel moved over to Stan-
dard School this year with the Grade
7 and 8 students, he brought with him
his passion for hiking and love of the
back-country. After discussions with the
staff of Standard and Rockyford schools,
under the direction of Principal Kar-
en Smith, it was decided that the trips
would continue and be kept simple to
start.
The Grade 5 and 6 class from Rocky-
ford, with their teacher Kathy Gerritson
and Wiewel, camped at Paddys Flats for
a total of three nights and four days. On
their third day students in Grade 5 and
6 from Standard School joined them in a
hike on the Canyon Creek Trail to Ings
Mine. The round trip hike that day to-
taled 12 km with 25 students and ap-
proximately a dozen adults.
The students, parents and teachers
were driven by bus to the trailhead and
they walked 6 km down the closed road.
At the end of the road, they were within
1 km of Ings Mine, a fun, non-technical
cave to explore. After crawling across
a skree (a steep slope of loose rocks)
one can see that the access to the cave
mouth is up a steep incline that can only
be negotiated on all fours.
Following huffng and puffng and a
lot of encouraging words of you can do
it, hikers came upon the cave mouth
(about 4 metres wide and 15 metres
tall).
Some students and chaperones ven-
tured inside the damp and dark cavern
where a few ignored the wet, icy foor
the deeper they went in.
With fashlights in hand and mit-
tens on, some even had to belly crawl
through spaces to explore this natural
wonder.
While the 6 km hike up the road and
mountain was strenuous and at times
grueling, those who made it to the top
and into the cave were rewarded by this
unique experience and defnitely over-
come with a sense of accomplishment.
Breathing became easier on the way
back down the path after the break of
exploring the cave came to an end, but
thighs, hips, knees and toes sure got a
workout especially after the 6 km walk
back to the beginning of the trailhead.
The group was picked up by bus and
driven back to Paddys Flats where they
were treated to burgers and a break
from all their hard travelling that day.
Wiewel will be taking the Grade 7 and
8 students from Standard School on a
one night and two day campout and will
be exploring and covering much of the
same territory later this week.
Each year I have looked forward to
these trips and I am looking forward to
starting a new tradition here at Standard
School, said Wiewel.

The Calgary Catholic Immigration So-
ciety (CCIS) presents Opening Doors, a
two Day Cultural Diversity Symposium
at Strathmores Centennial Civic Centre
from Sept 29-30. The focus is to help
build a stronger multicultural paradigm
throughout the smaller centres of rural
Southern Alberta.
The symposium includes keynote
speakers who are there to give their out-
look on immigration resettlement. The
entire workshops activities and discus-
sions are designed to create an overall
awareness in the issues revolving around
cultural integration.
As a celebration, any in attendance at
the workshop are invited to a banquet at
the Strathmore Travelodge on Thursday,
Sept. 29 from 6 - 10 p.m. The night will
include the buffet dinner, a cash bar, a
dance and entertainment.
Tickets to the symposium are $55.00
and can be bought online. More infor-
mation can be found at http://opening-
doorsstrathmore.eventbrite.com/

Westmount Elementary School was
the only elementary school in Strath-
more in the early 1970s. Many people
have passed through its doors over the
years, some returning when they have
children of their own, pointing out for-
mer classrooms and teachers they may
remember. On Sept. 30 the school will
be celebrating 40 years.
The afternoon of the 30th were hav-
ing a kind of open house event during
the school day. Were going to have a
big assembly and just some fun things
to commemorate that, said Principal
Wayne Funk.
Students, parents and all former staff
members will be invited to the open
house to be a part of the celebrations.
Pat Irish, who works in the front of-
fce, has been with the school from the
beginning, joining the team offcially
two months after the school opened its
doors.
The students were hard at work dur-
ing the frst week of school, preparing
their individual clay bricks that will be
part of a big mural.
Everybody got kind of assigned to
one of the schools virtues and thats
what they made their brick (signify)
and thats what the mural is going to be
about, said Funk.
The virtues are: respect, truth, wis-
dom, love and friendship, courage, hu-
mility, and honesty, all of which will be
displayed on the mural. The mural will
be on display near the entrance for ev-
eryone to enjoy when they come to the
school.

Bear Facts
Bears will generally enter hibernation in early October and emerge sometime in April or May,
when their food is plentiful again. The hibernation cycle is just another unique adaptation of
nature that allows many animals like the bear to survive during
the severe conditions of wintertime.

Holy Cross Collegiate, HCC, hosted a Junior Var-
sity girls home volleyball tournament Sept. 16 and
17.
It was our frst tournament of the year. We ended
our tournament winning our bronze medal match,
said Darren Perizzolo, Head Coach of the Hawks
Junior and Senior Varsity Womens teams at HCC.
This group of young women are very eager to
learn, and are a very coachable bunch. So far things
are going very well. I am extremely impressed with
the work ethic and enthusiasm that these young
women bring to every practice.
The tournament brought teams in from all over
the zone, including Strathmore High Schools, SHS,
JV Spartans.
The Spartans started off the tournament by play-
ing Three Hills, Strathcona Tweedsmuir, and HCC
Jr. A, winning all three matches in the third set of
the round robin.
In the quarterfnals the Spartans were up against
Queen Elizabeth school, winning with a score of
15-9 in the third set. In the semi-fnal match HCC
and SHS faced each other once again across the net.
The Spartans took another victory, winning both
sets by a score of 25-22.
The Spartans and the Hawks will be facing each
other at least three more times in league play, and
each game is almost guaranteed to be a great match
up.
In the fnal the Spartans played the Chestermere
Lakers. It was a close match with the Spartans com-
ing out on top, scoring 25-21 in one set and 28-26
in the other.
Its a great start to the season but we defnitely
have some things to work on, said SHS JV girls
coach Jerry Flaws.
We need to work on court positioning and block-
ing. We served well and passed well this weekend,
which is a huge asset at all levels of play.
The Spartans and Hawks faced each other again
on Sept. 20. The results were unavailable as of press
time.

Holy Cross Collegiates, HCC, and Strathmore High Schools Junior girls
volleyball teams faced each other on the court Sept. 17. The two local teams
were pitted against each other during the tournament hosted by HCC.

Players vying for a spot
on the UFA Bisons roster
had their frst opportunity
to square off against po-
tential future opponents
this past weekend, as the
local triple-A midget team
held their annual exhibition
tournament.
The Bisons hosted the
Calgary Buffaloes, the Cal-
gary Northstars and the Red
Deer Rebels in a preseason
tournament Sept. 15-18 at
the Strathmore Family Cen-
tre.
It went really well, we
started a little slow, but the
guys got used to the pace,
said head coach Jeremy Fri-
esen. We made adjustments
throughout the weekend it
was good to see the kids ad-
just and to be able to handle
those things and execute
them.
The biggest thing for us
was to identify and give
kids opportunities to chal-
lenge them and see what
they can do. We werent too
worried about the score-
board it was just about
going through the process,
making sure everyone had
an opportunity to show us
what they can do.
We saw a lot of really
good things.
According to Friesen, most
of the teams at the tourna-
ment brought 30-33 players
to evaluate before trimming
their roster. The Bisons
made their cuts immediately
after the tourney, trimming
their roster to 22 players.
Each team must be down to
20 players before the start of
the regular season.
The Bisons lost 4-3 to Red
Deer to open the tourna-
ment before a 4-2 win over
the Northstars. The team
was relegated to third in the
round robin after losing to
the Buffaloes 5-2.
In the semifnal against
Red Deer, the locals won a
thrilling double overtime
game 5-4, before losing
3-1 in the fnal game to the
Northstars.
If you look at the scores,
with the exception of two of
our games, every game was
decided by one goal, said
Friesen. It goes to show
the competition within the

league and how tight the
league actually is. It was a
good teaching point for the
kids too because it goes to
show that if you make one
or two mistakes in a game,
they end up in the back of
your net. Whether they be
in the preseason or the reg-
ular season thats the dif-
ference (between wins and
losses).
Attention to detail is criti-
cal.
Friesen was particularly
impressed with his team
when they used their speed
and got into the offensive
zone.
When we play fve on
fve and get the puck deep
and establish a forecheck
were a pretty scary team,
said Friesen. We need to
create some more oppor-
tunities as far as driving
the net and crashing (the
crease). Weve got a lot of
speed and size up front
guys that will crash and
bang, and weve got a very,
very mobile defence that
can put a lot of pressure on
the opposition and make it
hard for them to breakout.
Were going to be a quick
transitioning team and I
think that is one of our
strongest asset(s).

It was a good day for the Strathmore
Spartans peewee team, right from the
kickoff.
We had the intimidation factor
when we got off to a fast start, said
offensive tackle Johnathan Lemay. The
Spartans scored a touchdown on their
frst two offensive possessions, the
second a long run on the frst play
of the series. Running back Ethan
Monaghan ran the ball 81 yards for
the touchdown, with 5:18 left in the
frst quarter.
The Spartan defense only allowed
two points on a safety with fve min-
utes left in the half. The second half
was a different story; the Stettler of-
fence started running the ball outside
and put up two touchdowns in the
half, but it was too little too late, as
the Spartans pulled off a 2614 win.
In the second game of the day, the
bantam team wasnt so lucky. With
most of the team out due to injuries,
the Spartans didnt have the numbers
to play against a very talented Rocky
Jr Rebels team.
The Rebels took the lead on their
frst possession and maintained it to a
75-0 victory. There were a few bright
spots for the bantam players, moving
the ball down the feld, but they were
unable to put any points on the board.
The team put in a good effort with
the few players they had available to
play. But that wasnt the only loss of
the day, as linebacker Aidan Jones suf-
fered a broken femur, and needed to
be taken to hospital by ambulance.
Our best wishes go out to him, for
speedy recovery.
The senior team played against the
Brooks Buffalos on Sept. 13. They lost
the game, but again there were many
positives to the game. Strathmores de-
fense held the very skilled Buffalos of-
fence for the majority of the game, and
the Spartans picked up a late touch-
down by slot back Josh Stolz in the
second half.
The senior Spartans are in action
on Tuesday against the Chestermere
Chiefs at home.
Later in the week, it will be just
the peewee Spartan playing at home
against the Springbank Phoenix on
Sept.24. Both the bantam and senior
teams do not have a game this week-
end.
Spartans program splits weekend games
Top: The peewee Spartans showed that
practice pays off when they won against
the Stettler Panthers on Sept. 17. Left: The
bantam Spartans also hit the gridiron on
Sept. 17 facing off against the Rebels.
