 Problem solving and problem based strategy

A skill that use understanding, strategy, implementation, and optimization

(method+answer=sulotion) ; polyas four steps.

Also known as PBL is a strategy where students will solve a problem/ set of problems that is
unfamiliar to them.

Underpinned by constructivist approach/ active learning.

Foster self directed learning effective problem solving, communication and collaboration skills.

PBL Process
Present problem –> students define the problem and brainstorm ideas based on prior
knowledge –> students engage in independent study –> students share information engage in
peer teaching and work toward a solution –> students present their solution and review what
they have learned –> students engage in self, peer, and tutor review of the process.

 Critical thinking skills in math

- Separates those who do math and those who understand what they are doing.
1. Arguments – thought process to present an arguments
2. Conflict resolution – find peaceful solution for disagreements
3. Conjecture reasons – important step in problem solving. Not yet fully proved; when it is,
it becomes a theorem.
 What is math education?
- Practice of teaching and learning mathematics
- Formal teaching and learning of mathematics concept.
 How to teach math?

1. Classical education – teaching math using deductive reasoning

2. Computer based math – use of mathematical software as primary tool of computation
3. Computer based math education – use of computers to teach math
4. Conventional approach – gradual and systematic guiding through the herarchy of
mathematical motion, idea, and techniques
5. Discovery mathematics – constructivist; problem based; inquiry based
6. Exercise – reinforcement of mathematical skills by completing large numbers of exercises.
7. Mastery – high level of competence before progressing
8. Problem solving – cultivation of mathematical inquiry, creativity, and heuristic thingking
9. Recreational math – for math activities
10. Standards based math – deepening students understanding of math
11. Relational / approach – class topics are solved and related to current events or real world
situations.
12. Rot learning – drills and kills a repetition and memorization
