PART -I; SOLVED PROBLEMS
1. A solid sphere has a radius of 1.5 cm and a mass of 0.038 kg. Calculate the specific gravity or
relative density of the sphere.
Solution
Radius of the sphere R = 1.5 cm
Mass m = 0.038 kg

2. Two pistons of a hydraulic lift have diameters of 60 cm and 5 cm. What is the force exerted

3. A cube of wood floating in water supports a 300 g mass at the center of its top face. When
the mass is removed, the cube rises by 3 cm. determine the volume of the cube.
Solution
 Let each side of the cube be l. The volume occupied by 3 cm depth of cube,

V= (3cm) × l2 = 3l2cm

According to the principle of floatation, we have

Vρg = mg ⇒ Vρ = m

ρ is density of water = 1000 kg m-3

(3l2 × 10-2m) × (1000 kgm-3)=300 × 10-3 kg

l = 10 × 10-2m = 10 cm

Therefore, volume of cube V = l3 = 1000 cm3

4. What is a hydrometer?
 It is a device used for calculating the relative density of liquids.

5. If the weight of the object is more than the weight of the water displaced, the object _____

A. Remains constant B. Floats C. Sinks D. None of the above options

Answer: C) Sinks

Explanation: When the weight of the displaced water is less than the object’s weight, the object
sinks.

5. State true or false: Buoyant force acts in a direction opposite to the gravitational force.

a. TRUE
b. FALSE Answer: a) TRUE

Explanation: The buoyant force always opposes gravitational force.

6. Choose YES or NO: Does the fluid pressure increase with depth.

A.YES B.NO

Answer: A) YES

Explanation: The weight of the fluid applies pressure on the submerged object that increases with
depth.

B. ⍴ × V/g D. ⍴ + V × g
Answer: A) ⍴ × V × g
Explanation: Thrust force is given by the formula ⍴ × V × g.
9. Archimedes’ principle helps to calculate the buoyancy of any floating object that is _____
immersed in a fluid
A. Only partially B. Only completely
B. Neither partially nor completely D. Both partially and completely
Answer: D) Both partially and completely.
Explanation: Both partially and completely immersed buoyancy of any floating object can be
calculated.
10. When does the object float?
The object will float when the weight of the water is displaced equal to the weight of the object.
