TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have received this email from an English speaking friend, Alex. Read part of his email
below.

Some friends of mine are going backpacking next month around Vietnam. They would like to
learn about Vietnamese culture and its history.

Where should they begin the trip? What´s the easiest way to get around? Where should they stay
as they are on a tight budget?
Write an email responding to him. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to
include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Alex,

Long time, no see! What a surprise to receive your email. The trip sounds amazing and I´m sure
that your friends will have a great time. I have a few ideas for things to do.

I think the best place to start the trip would be in Ho Chi Minh City - also called Saigon, as it’s
easier to get cheap flights to this city. The city has a great history related to Vietnam War and a
great vibe. Then they can take a trip out of the city and explore Mekong River, a paradise for
wildlife.

From there I would start heading north and stop in Dalat, a scenic small city, then travel down
the coast by bus to Mui Ne and NhaTrang to enjoy some water sports. From NhaTrang it is easy
to get a train to Da Nang; don’t forget to visit Hoi An Ancient Town. Then go to Hue Imperial
City, it is not to be missed. After that, take a coach to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and take a
tour around the old city by motorbike or even on foot. The best places to finish would be Ha
Long Bay, a highlight on any Vietnam trip, and Sa Pa, where they can explore Fansipan Mount.

Regarding accommodation, the best option would be to stay in hostels or dorms; they normally
cost between $5 and $8 per night.

Please let me know what you think. I look forward to speaking to you in the near future.

Your friend,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an education magazine.

While compulsory education in some countries such as England begins at the age offive (with
many children actually starting at four), in countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Finland,
school does not begin until the age of seven.
There are two different points of view regarding this. Some people think that children should
begin their formal education at a very early age and should spend most of their time on school
studies. Others believe that young children should spend most of their time playing.
Write an essay to an educated reader to tell which point of view you agree with. Include specific
reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

People learn through their entire lives. Curiosity was always the basic characteristic of a human
being. We always want to break limits and learn more. At this point, some people think that
children should begin their formal education at a very early age and spend most of their time on
school studies. This will help them to succeed in the future. However, for several reasons, which
I will explain bellow, I think that children should not study at a very early age.

Of course, children who begin to study at a very early age have more chances to succeed in the
future. They gain more knowledge and experience which are priceless and valuable. In addition,
studying more now they will give them the opportunity to perfect their knowledge in the future
and become better professionals.

However, I think that every child must have his or her childhood. Children should learn through
playing and communication with their friends and parents. I think that such basic qualities as
kindness, self-confidence and just a good sense of humour cannot be gained from studying.
Children should more time spend with their family, playing and learning with their parents.
Imagine that a child instead of playing with his friends does his homework and feel exhausted
and tired. Another important aspect of this is that children at their early ages need more exercise
because at this age the development of their body is an essential aspect. Children, first of all,
must be healthy.

To sum up, I think that children should have their careless childhood with no responsibilities.
Moreover, I am sure that playing helps them develop not only their bones and muscles but their
ability to make decisions, analyse things and make conclusions, which is very good for their
future.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

This is an extract from your pen-friend’s postcard:

I’m having a busy time at the moment as I have to write lots of Christmas cards to all my friends
and relatives.

Do you celebrate Christmas in Vietnam? What holidays are celebrated in your country? What is
your favourite holiday? How do you celebrate it?

Well, I’d better go now. I’ve got to help mum with cooking.

I can’t wait to hear from you.

Lots of love,

Dan

Write a letter to Dan. In your letter

 answer his questions about Vietnamese holidays

 ask 3 questions about British holidays

You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Dan,

Thanks a lot for your postcard. I also wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Actually, in Vietnam, Christmas isn't an official public holiday. In the past, Christmas was only
celebrated by Christian community but in recent days it is getting more and more popular and is
greeted with happiness by Vietnamese people. They also decorate the streets and department
stores with Christmas trees, snowflake decoration and colourful lights. There are lots of other
holidays celebrated in Vietnam such as Women’s Day, Mid-Autumn Festival and New Year’s
Day. My favourite holiday is Tet holiday. Tet is a special holiday in Viet Nam. It’s on the first of
January based on Lunar Calendar. To prepare for Tet, people usually clean and decorate their
houses. They also cook traditional food, such as banhchung or banhtet. During Tet, each family
has a big party. Children wear new clothes and get lucky money from older people. It’s also the
time to visit relatives, teachers and friends.

So how do you celebrate Christmas? Are there any holidays connected with British history? How
do you mark them?

Well, I’d better go now. It’s time to do the cooking. Take care and write back soon.

Your friend,

TASK 2:
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about the Internet:

It is evident that the Internet has increasingly brought about significant changes to our life.
According to a recent study, the more time people use the Internet, the less time they spend with
real human beings. Some people say that instead of seeing the Internet as a way of opening up
new communication possibilities worldwide, we should be concerned about the effect it is having
on social interactions.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about the effects of the
Internet on human interactions. Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your
answer. You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

It is evident that, at present, people are spending a considerable amount of time on the Internet,
and thus spending less time with real people. I strongly agree that although this use of the
Internet has greatly increased the level of communication available, it has also had detrimental
effects on the amount and type of social interaction that takes place.

The benefits of the Internet in terms of increased communication are clear, with people
connected across the globe. In the past, communication was only possible by phone or mail,
which entailed time and expense. It also usually meant just keeping in contact with those
peoplealready known to you. With the internet, this has changed dramatically. Email and
socialnetworking sites such as Facebook and MSN have created online communities that are
global in scale, and they have fostered communication between people and countries that we
would not have thought possible in the not too distant past.

That said, there is no doubt in my mind that this has had negative impacts on social interaction.
People, especially the younger generation, spend hours of their time online, chatting and on
forums. Although this can be beneficial, it is certainly not the same as real interaction with
human beings and does not involve the same skills. It is important that children have and
maintain real friendships in order to develop their own interpersonal skills. Not only this, it can
also have negative effects on local communities if people are spending most of their time
communicating online and not mixing in their neighbourhoods, and possibly lead to feelings of
isolation for those individuals who do not have a ‘real’ person to turn to in times of need.

To conclude, I believe that the internet has undoubtedly been beneficial, but there are good
reasons to be concerned about social interaction in our societies. It is therefore important that we
maintain a balance between our online life and our contact with real human beings.

intensive English course, three or four classes per week if possible.

I am 20 years old now and I have been studying English since I was in secondary school.
However, I am sure I need to improve lots of things. Despite the fact I am quite good at
grammar, I must admit I have difficulties in pronunciation and expressing my ideas. Besides, I
think I have some troubles rememberingand using new words.

I am very interested in languages, and my hobbies are reading books and watching films in
English. I consider all these activities are worthwhile since they help you develop your
intellectual skills. Moreover, I enjoy doing different activities every day in order to take
advantage of the experience I may gain and the things I can learn.

Read the following text from an article about the quality of life in large cities:

Recent years have witnessed the increasingly deteriorating quality of cities. Population explosion
and pollution are attributed to this phenomenon. The corresponding solutions are needed to put
forward.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about the causes and
solutions of this problem. Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer.
You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

The global phenomenon of urbanisation from the beginning of industrialisation to the present
day has brought opportunity and prosperity, albeit at a cost in the quality of life. With an
increasing city population, the complexity of the challenges also increases, the causes and
solutions for this are outlined below.

The causes for the decrease in the quality of life are paradoxically the prosperity endowed on
such metropolitan centres. Their growth is largely due to the increase of opportunities on offer,
which in turn increases their attractiveness, essentially they are trapped in a positive self-
reinforcing cycle. However, this eventually leads to a decrease in the quality of life as the city
can experience overcrowding, exorbitant property prices, and increased vulnerability to terrorist
attacks. For example the density of London makes it a more efficient place to attack, when
compared to a smaller city such as Bradford. Therefore, due to continuous growth and
prosperity, urban citizens, especially the less well off, often experience a lower standard of
living.

Considering the solutions, greater investment in public transport would ease traffic congestion,
as would bike lanes. In theory this would reduce air pollution, and possibly improve the
wellbeing of the population if they did adopt a more active lifestyle and cycle to work. To
counter violent terrorist attacks, cities could embark on CCTV installations, so as to closely
monitor for threats. For example, it is said, the CCTV in London has foiled many potential
attacks, and therefore greatly increased the security of its citizens.

To conclude, a wealthy city attracts a large population inflow, which then causes pressure on
existing infrastructure and security. Various solutions exist to mitigate such drawbacks,
nevertheless an indefinite solution has yet to be found.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about equality in the number of male and female students
in the university:

Universities are the pillars of a society and build a sophisticated civilisation in this modern era.
Therefore the standard of education should be maintained at an optimum level in order to ensure
that the education. Many believe that university admission should be based on the ratio males
and females for each major to maintain the equilibrium among women and men.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this issue. Include
reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250 words.
Model Answer:

In my opinion, men and women should have the same educational opportunities. However, I do
not agree with the idea of accepting equal proportions of each gender in every university subject.

Having the same number of men and women on all degree courses is simply unrealistic. Student
numbers on any course depend on the applications that the institution receives. If a university
decided to fill courses with equal numbers of males and females, it would need enough
applicants of each gender. In reality, many courses are more popular with one gender than the
other, and it would not be practical to aim for equal proportions. For example, nursing courses
tend to attract more female applicants, and it would be difficult to fill these courses if fifty per
cent of the places needed to go to males.

Apart from the practical concerns expressed above, I also believe that it would be unfair to base
admission to university courses on gender. Universities should continue to select the best
candidates for each course according to their qualifications. In this way, both men and women
havethe same opportunities, and applicants know that they will be successfulif they work hard to
achieve good grades at school. If a female student isthe best candidate for a place on a course, it
is surely wrong to reject her in favour of a male student with lower grades or fewer
qualifications.

In conclusion, the selection of university students should be based on merit, and it would be both
impractical and unfair to change to a selection procedure based on gender.

Model Answer:

Dear Anne,

How are you? It's been long since my last email but I was terribly busy listing details of my trip
to London. I really appreciate your willingness to help.
Generally the main reason I’m going to the UK is to develop my language skills. I don't have any
experience in working abroad so I decided that I would try to find a job as a waitress in a
restaurant. I think it would be perfect to spend evenings working whereas daytime would be for
sightseeing as well as meeting my friends.I’ve always wantedto see Big Ben and Thames river,
now my dream is going to come true.

As for the details of the trip, I've just booked my flight. My departure time will be the 12 th of
August, at 8 pm. As far as I know, the flight lasts more than twelve hours so I should turn up at
the airport near midday. I hope we will meet soon in London.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about high levels of migration from rural areas to cities:

The world has never witnessed such a great influx of population in cities from rural areas that it
did in the last decade. Cities are already over-populated, polluted and cramped with an
overwhelming number of people. Only decentralisation and mandatory relocation can reverse the
scenario.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about the causes and effects
off this trend. Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should
write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Migration from the countryside to cities is certainly a topical issue, as so many nations are seeing
this pattern today. There are three main causes, and two key impacts, which I will outline now.

The main cause is probably the lack of employment available to rural people. Rural industries,
ranging from agriculture to food production and animal breeding, have all been rationalized and
made far more efficient in recent years, meaning that fewer people are needed to staff them.
Furthermore, the growth of employment opportunities in the cities means that people, especially
youngsters, are tempted to move there by higher wages and the prospect of reliable work.
Finally, many countries still have a weaker infrastructure in rural areas, especially in terms of
transport and economic activity. For example, if a country dweller is unable to find public
transport to get to work locally, that person will inevitably consider moving to a city where the
infrastructure is far better established.

Regarding the effects felt by the urban residents, perhaps the main impact is on accommodation.
An increased urban population drives up the cost of buying or renting a home, leading to
possible hardship for people who had assumed that prices would remain stable. We can see this
clearly in major conurbations such as London, Sao Paolo or Delhi, where property prices are
extremely high and continue to rise. The other main effect on the existing city population is the
vastly increased competition for job opportunities, especially at a less skilled level. For instance,
drivers, shop workers and hospitality staff find themselves competing for work with new arrivals
who are often prepared to work for less. This can lead to a reduction in wages and consequent
decline in standard of living, especially when combined with the increased cost of housing.

To sum up, the causes of this trend are primarily to do with employment, and the effects are felt
in terms of wages and accommodation.

Read the following text from an article aboutvegetarianism:

Vegetarians tend to avoid consuming meat and fish on the purpose of keeping body health and
concerning on environmental issue. It is a fact that several groups of people prefer not to
consume any kinds of meat and fish, as they believe that being vegetarian bring many benefits
for their health and for the world as a whole.

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

There is a general belief that there are many health and environmental benefits to vegetarianism.
While I do agree with this view, I do not think that vegetarianism is for everyone.

The consumption of animal products certainly has some health consequences. It hurts the
environment as well. Some studies have shown that vegetarians tend to live longer than their
meat or fish eating counterparts. The environmental impacts of non-vegetarianism are even
worse. Annually, countless animals are raised, abused and slaughtered to fulfill the demand for
meat and fish worldwide. Framing livestock is one of the major causes of greenhouse gas
emissions worldwide. If we can reduce the consumption of meat, the need for raising more
animals also reduces. As a result, the land that is being used to raise them can be altered to grow
vegetables which in turn produce clean air for the whole planet. Obviously, cutting down on the
consumption of animal products benefits the whole world.

On the other hand, meat and fish are integral part of many cuisines; therefore, being a vegetarian
is not an option in many regions of the world. To illustrate, sushi is the most popular Japanese
delicacy and without the addition of its main ingredient, fish, sushi will not be complete. Meat
consumption is particularly common in cold countries. There are also some regions where it is
difficult to grow vegetables and cereals. Furthermore, fish and meat are excellent sources of
proteins and some fatty acids crucial for good health. For this season, meat consumption is
essential for people engaging in strenuous physical activities. Being vegetarian, for example, is
not a viable option for a body builder or an athlete.
In conclusion, even though there are advantages to vegetarianism, I believe that this lifestyle is
not for everyone. Even so, in my opinion, everyone should make an effort to cut down on their
consumption of animal foods. That way they can improve their health and save the planet from
tons of greenhouse gases.

Dear Mary,

Thank you very much for your letter. As I told you in my previous letter, I began an English
course three months ago and by now I have had a good result but I think it would be better for
me to go to England to have an advanced course of about three weeks to make a definite
improvement inmy English pronunciation and vocabulary.

I'd really prefer a morning course. This is because in the afternoon I want to have enough free
time to spend with you and go sightseeing. Besides, I also need accommodation during my stay
in Manchester. I guess the best place to stay is in a house with a host family because I want to
practice English every day, but if you've got a better idea, please let me know. Moreover, I need
to ask you two more questions. First, have you got any idea of how much I would have to pay for
the course? Second, do you think it is possible to get a part time job in the evening?

Thank you in advance for your help and I'd really appreciate it if you could check the course fee
and the accommodation for me first.

Read the following text from an article about social responsibilities of businesses:

People have different views about what kinds of obligation a company should have. While some
people suppose that the top priority of companies is to generate profits, others think they should
focus on social responsibilities.

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this issue. Include
reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Businesses have always sought to make a profit, but it is becoming increasingly common to hear
people talk about the social obligations thatcompanies have. I completely agree with the idea that
businesses shoulddo more for society than simply make money.

On the one hand, I accept that businesses must make money in order to survive in a competitive
world. It seems logical that the priority of any company should be to cover its running costs,
such as employees’ wages and payments for buildings and utilities. On top of these costs,
companies also need to invest in improvements and innovations if they wish to remain
successful. If a company is unable to pay its bills or meet the changing needs of customers, any
concerns about social responsibilities become irrelevant. In other words, a company can only
make a positive contribution to society if it is in good financial health.

On the other hand, companies should not be run with the sole aim of maximising profit; they
have a wider role to play in society. One social obligation that owners and managers have is to
treat their employees well, rather than exploiting them. For example, they could pay a “living
wage” to ensure that workers have a good quality of life. I also like the idea that businesses could
use a proportion of their profits to support local charities, environmental projects or education
initiatives. Finally, instead of trying to minimise their tax payments by using accounting
loopholes, I believe that company bosses should be happy to contribute to society through the tax
system.

In conclusion, I believe that companies should place as much importance on their social
responsibilities as they do on their financial objectives.

Model Answer:

Dear Barbara,

I am very happy to receive your letter. It’s my pleasure to help you with your project, and I hope
that I can give you some details you could use.

In the main, Vietnamese people have breakfast at around 7 am. The breakfast can be a loaf of
bread or a bowl of noodles. We often drink coffee or milk when having breakfast. Then at
around 12 pm, we have lunch. A typical meal usually includes rice, a dish of meat or fish, a dish
of vegetables and a bowl of soup. There are also dipping sauces and side dishes like pickled
cabbage to enhance the flavor of other dishes. After the meal, we have some fruit for dessert. The
old people would prefer to have a cup of green tea. Between 6 and 7 pm most Vietnamese
families have their dinner which resembles lunch.

Well, I think that’s all. Good luck with your project!

Your friend,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about the ways to develop skills for children:

Children development, a widely accepted as a significant task for parents, is a heated-up issue. It
is believed that allowing tots to practice their hobbies or sports is more beneficial to their skills,
rather than committing to reading books or novels. Or, in other words, doing an enjoyable
activity with a child can develop better skills and more creativity than reading.

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.
Model Answer:

Parents throughout the world place spend time reading with their offspring to prepare them for
school where their literacy skills are further developed; however, recent research suggests that
focusing on reading at an early age can be detrimental, and participating in fun activities would
be far more beneficial. I am a strong advocate of this approach, and the benefits of it will be
covered in this essay.

A fundamental reason for this is that there is no biological age for reading, and pushing infants to
acquire this skill before they are ready could have repercussions. For example, in the UK, many
boys are reluctant readers, possibly because of being forced to read, and this turned them off
reading. By focusing on other activities and developing other skills such as creativity and
imagination, when they are ready to read, they usually acquire this skill rapidly. In addition, the
importance of encouraging creativity and developing a child’s imagination must be
acknowledged. Through play, youngsters develop social and cognitive skills, for example, they
are more likely to learn vocabulary through context rather than learning it from a book.

Furthermore, play allows youngsters to mature emotionally, and gain self-confidence. There is
no scientific research which suggests reading at a young age is essential for a child’s
development, moreover, evidence suggests the reverse is true. In Finland, early years’ education
focuses on playing. Reading is only encouraged if a child shows and interest in developing this
skill. This self-directed approach certainly does not result in Finnish school leavers falling
behind their foreign counterparts. In fact, Finland was ranked the sixth best in the world in terms
of reading.

Despite being a supporter of this non-reading approach, I strongly recommend incorporating

bedtime stories into a child’s daily routine. However, reading as a regular daytime activity
should be swapped for something which allows the child to develop other skills.

sophisticated restaurant serving a buffet dinner that will impress everyone – even people who
don’t usually like buffets! It offers excellent international dishes, seafood and Vietnamese food.
Both of the restaurants are close to HoanKiem Lake, so you can go for a walk after the meal.

Well, I hope you do like one of those and wish you an enjoyable day! Give my love to your
family!

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about the admission fee of museums:

A museum is an entity that preserves the artifacts of history and works as an important
representative of a nation’s tradition and culture. Thus the importance of museums to convey the
historical facts to the new generation is beyond controversy. However, there are scopes to
discuss whether entry to a museum should be free or not.

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about the question that the
advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages or not.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

Some museums have an admission charge while some do not. In my opinion, the drawbacks of
an entrance fee are eclipsed by its benefits in the sense that the income will be ploughed back
into operation and development of the museums.
A major disadvantage of an admission fee is the possibility of reducing the number of visitors.
Museums house exhibitions and artifacts of great educational and historical value. If the chief
aim of a museum is to introduce the local community, admission should be free to the public and
visitors. Take some folk museums in Hong Kong, which preserve historic relics and display folk
customs, for example. Admission to these folk museums, which are often monuments, is free of
charge. If they had charged an entrance fee, many might have turned to other activities.

Granted, an entrance fee might have a negative effect on the admission figures, but an income is
favorable to museums in terms of operation. Museums feature educational exhibitions at times,
and this could not have been done without a sum of money expended on hiring professionals and
buying equipment. The Hong Kong Space Museum, for instance, has monthly exhibitions on
different issues and professional docents are employed to take visitors on a guided tour around
the museum. This example speaks volumes about how a reasonable admission charge is
advantageous to the operation of a museum.

In conclusion, the disadvantages of an admission fee are overshadowed by the benefits accruing
from a stable source of income. Therefore, having weighed up the pros and cons, I am convinced
that museums should charge an entrance fee for the sake of operation and development.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Read this extract from a letter you have recently sent to a friend:

Oh, and by the way, don't go to XZY Restaurant for your birthday. We went there last night - the
service was awful and the food was a disaster! I complained to the head waiter but he asked me
to put it in writing.

Write your letter of complaint to the restaurant manager. You should write at least 120 words.
You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my annoyance at the service I received in your restaurant yesterday. I

chose your restaurant to invite my relatives following the advertisement and reviews on “Hanoi
Food Blog”, but the reality failed to live up to my expectations.

First, as advertised on the blog, you had a variety of set meals on the menu. However, many
dishes were unavailable yesterday, which really disappointed my guests. Although we had
wanted to have seafood, we had to choose rice with pork and some kinds of fresh juice.
When the food came out, it was cold and we were given chicken by mistake so they had to take it
away and make another meal. The juice was good but the pork was overcooked and salty and
some was just bone, knuckle and skin.None of the meals we had could be finished.

After a few attempts to get someone's attention to pay, we went up to the counter and on paying
the bill, I complained about this inconvenience to your head waiter, but he asked me to contact
you directly in writing. I feel that a refund of at least 500.000 dong, which is half of our bill,
would be appropriate. I look forward to receiving a satisfactory reply within 7 days.

Yours sincerely,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about fresh water issue:

Fresh water has always been a limited resource in some parts of the world. Today, however,
growing worldwide demand has made this a global problem.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about the causes of the
increased demand and measures governments and individuals could take to respond to this
problem. Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at
least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Since time immemorial, in certain drier parts of the world, fresh water has always been a scarce
natural resource. However, in the present time, due to various reasons, scarcity of fresh water has
become a global issue. This essay will illustrate some factors contributing to this problem and
will also elicit certain steps that can help the national authorities and individuals in controlling
this growing demand for natural salt free water.

There are compelling reasons for shortage of fresh water. The main reason is the overpopulation
in the metropolitan areas. The global phenomenon of urbanization has led to the global surge in
potable water requirement. Secondly, increased pollution of natural fresh water reserves due to
urbanisation and industrialization has compounded this demand. In fact, since the beginning of
industrialization, fresh water from rivers and lakes has been increasingly used for manufacturing
processes such as chemical reactions, cleaning toxic equipment and so on. Furthermore, in
modern times, the growing use of salt free water for activities like recreational swimming, have
also catalysed the surge in global water demand. For instance, swimming pools at home, theme
parks, and resorts use an avalanche of water. Therefore, water scarcity has risen and is now a
global problem.
National authorities, on the other hand, can control this surge by implementing public education
schemes regarding controlled water usage. Strict national legislations for preventing natural fresh
water reserve pollution are also required. Moreover, government should also set up infrastructure
for purification of seawater into saline free water, which will help in meeting the growing
requirement of fresh water. A good example is UAE where desalination plants have been used
since many years to provide fresh drinking water.

Similarly, public can also contribute towards this noble cause by conserving water and also by
limiting their daily household water usage. They should refrain themselves from performing
activities that will pollute natural fresh water reserves.

Thus even though, the scarcity of fresh water is a growing global problem, there are various
means and methods available, by which both the government and individuals can prevent this
from worsening.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about work-life balance:

One of the most conspicuous trends in the 21st century is the difficulty of keeping a life-work
balance. Some people find it hard to manage their time to be successful and fully responsible at
their workplace and at the same time spend quality time with their families. This is certainly a
problem faced by many.

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about the causes of this
situation, and what individuals and employerscan do to reduce the problem. Include reasons and
any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Finding a compromise between one’s job and one’s private life is probably harder than ever
these days, especially if one has a family. There are several reasons for this, but also a number of
measures we can take.

Possibly the major factor is the increased workload that many people have to deal with. The
predominance of the service sector means that most people work in office-related jobs, and they
find that employers expect them to stay longer or be available outside traditional office hours. On
top of this, the rise of communication tools – ranging from smart phones to laptops and
teleconferencing equipment – has accelerated the trend, because people are always contactable.
Furthermore, the economic recession has made the labour market increasingly competitive, and
so workers are under pressure to cooperate in this process, fearing loss of promotion or even
redundancy if they resist.

However, there are various steps that can be taken to lessen the problem. Firstly, individuals
should clarify with their employer the times when they expect to be free of work and out of
contact, thus ensuring private time. Another positive development would be for employers to
allow more flexible working hours, so that staff can take time off for important family events
during the working day. Lastly, employers could offer advice and coaching to staff in areas such
as time management, stress control and relaxation techniques. This would help to reduce the
anxiety that stems from heavy workloads and long hours.
In summary, we can say that technology and economics are creating this situation, but also that
employees and companies together can reduce the impact.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have been informed that the company you work for is going to close down its sport and
leisure club in order to save costs. You have organised a meeting with your colleagues to discuss
the matter and the following points were made:

The club is used by most employees after work and it brings a lot of benefits.
The management should reconsider its decision and consider alternatives.
Action: write a email to the Managing Director on behalf of employees explaining our views and

Re: Decision to close our leisure centre

I am writing on behalf of my colleagues to express our concern about your decision to close our
fitness club and we would like to share with you our opinions on this matter.

As you know very well, many of us go to this club regularly. We take advantage of its wonderful
facilities, ranging from the swimming pool to the sauna. The club location is very convenient for
employees because we do not waste time commuting there since this centre is very close to our
work place. Furthermore, this leisure centre seems to be an ideal place for relaxing after a hard
day at work. You cannot deny that general health is closely connected with work efficiency.

We appreciate that there is a real need to decrease costs. However, closing the club is not the
only solution available. We encourage you to find another way of saving money. Perhaps some
of us would accept a slight increase in prices of for using these amenities, of course with reduced
rates.

Taking everything into account, we would be grateful if you could reconsider your decision. We
are convinced that retaining this club would be beneficial both for all employees and work
performance.
Yours faithfully,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about sports at school:

Sports started out as a leisure activity and there are a lot of different sports played and enjoyed
throughout the world. However, the topic of sports has become a controversial one in modern
times. Some people believe that sport is an essential part of school life for children, while
others feel it should be purely optional
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about both points of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

Sport continues to be a controversial topic in the school curriculum, just as sport itself has
become a controversial industry in some respects. There are valid opinions on both sides, which I
will consider now.

On the one hand, some people feel that sport uses up time which could be better spent on
academic subjects such as exam preparation. In addition, it might be said that it is unwise to
force children to do activities which they have no interest in. After all, some youngsters are just
not sporty, and should be allowed to study instead. Finally, there are question marks over the
wholesomeness of sport itself, with drugging and corruption scandals increasingly common, as
we see in cycling at present. Some people believe that this lack of morals sets a poor example to
young people.

On the other hand, though, one major benefit of sport is that it helps children’s physical
development at an important stage. If all their time was spent studying, they would become unfit
and their minds would eventually suffer. Furthermore, supporters of school sport emphasize the
importance of team building in sports such as football or hockey, which is often felt to be an
excellent preparation for adulthood. Finally, many people feel that a competitive spirit, so
important today, is fostered by sports at an early age. It is notable, for example, that many
successful business people excelled in sport at school.

Overall, I feel that sport should be compulsory for school children, because the positive effect on
their mental and physical development outweighs the negatives. This is as long as children are
given a wide range to choose from, to ensure their interest is high, and that the sports industry
itself maintains the highest standards of conduct.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You see this advertisement in a student newspaper.

Lifeguard assistants wanted

We are looking for someone in September to assist our lifeguards, provide supervision during
beach activities and observe swimmers.

Write to the Lifeguard Manager, saying what your experience and qualifications are and stating
the reasons why you are suitable for the job. You should write at least 120 words. You are not
allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am looking for an outdoor job during the summer holidays and I would like to apply for the
position of lifeguard assistant that I saw advertised in my university’s student newspaper.

I am 20 years old and at present I am studying Physical Education. I am a strong swimmer and
have recently had first aid training. I enjoy working with people very much and for the last two
summers I have been working as an assistant in a National Park, where I had to provide
information to the public about the rules when visiting the park and provide emergency
assistance to the park visitors. Now I am looking for something different.

I think I would be a suitable candidate for the position because I have been described as calm in
a crisis and someone who works well with others.

I am available for the whole of September and would be happy to attend an interview at any
time. I look forward to hearing from you at any time in the near future.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about zoo:

Animate being is an inseparable component of the universe and there is a controversial matter
concerning animals. Some people feel that it is always wrong to keep animals in captivity, for
instance in zoos. Other people say that there are benefits for the animals and for humans.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about both points of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

Zoos continue to be controversial, even now that they have evolved into ‘animal parks’ or similar
facilities. Most people love animals, and there are strong views on both sides, which I will
discuss now.

People opposed to zoos highlight the unnatural way in which animals live in such places. For
example, captive animals do not need to hunt or raise offspring, and this means that they are not
living as nature intended. Furthermore, the anti-zoo lobby point out that animals probably suffer
mentally when kept in captivity, even if their surroundings are spacious and similar to the natural
habitat.

Symptoms of mental issues range from repetitive behaviour to eating disorders, and these are
oftenseen in captive animals. Lastly, it is often said that zoos add little to animal conservation,
which is better served by preserving their habitat.

Conversely, those who support zoos say that in most cases they offer a secure and peaceful
setting for animals, for example in high quality wildlife parks or reserves. They add that in many
cases, the animals would suffer from loss of habitat or poaching in the wild, and in captivity they
are at least safe and able to breed successfully. Finally, zoo enthusiasts feel that zoos and animal
parks are part of an integrated system of protecting animals, involving habitat protection,
breeding programmes and disease control. This all helps to safeguard endangered species and
thus preserve the global ecosystem for the future benefit of all life forms.

Overall, I feel that zoos provide a valuable service to society and the animal world, as they help
to protect many species. This outweighs their possible disadvantages, as long as they are
properly staffed and maintained.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have received this email from a friend called Bill. Read part of his email below.

Well, I have had some health problems recently. I don’t know the exact reason, but I think it may
come from my smoking. I started smoking a couple of months ago and I’m becoming dependent
on it. Every day I smoke a few cigarettes, maybe 4-5. Could you please give me some advice? I
feel quite depressed…
Write to your friend. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.

Model Answer:

Hi Bill,

I got your e-mail yesterday. I was excited to finally hear from you, although the news is not very
good.

I am sorry for your health problems. But why did you start smoking? Do you have problems with
your friends, family or school? If so, do you get some kind of satisfaction from smoking? I have
heard that it helps with anger and anxiety, but boy it isn’t worth it! This may cause your asthma.
You'd better talk to your parents and a doctor if you haven't yet.

Last night I made a close study on the internet about possible ways to give up smoking. I came
across some really interesting solutions, which I will send you later. In many blogs people share
their experience and say that you need a strong will and supportive friends. Think about your
future. You've got the chance to win a scholarship and study technology. You've been dreaming
of this since you were 6. Don't throw away your chances by doing pointless things. I hope you
will think over my advice.

I am looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

Love,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about choices of university students:

Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe
that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those
related to science and technology.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about both points of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

People have different views about how much choice students should have with regard to what
they can study at university. While some argue that it would be better for students to be forced
into certain key subject areas, I believe that everyone should be able to study the course of their
choice.
There are various reasons why people believe that universities should only offer subjects that
will be useful in the future. They may assert that university courses like medicine, engineering
and information technology are more likely to be beneficial than certain art degrees. From a
personal perspective, it can be argued that these courses provide more job opportunities, career
progression, better salaries, and therefore an improved quality of life for students who take them.
On the societal level, by forcing people to choose particular university subjects, governments can
ensure that any knowledge and skill gaps in the economy are covered. Finally, a focus on
technology in higher education could lead to new inventions, economic growth, and greater
future prosperity.

In spite of these arguments, I believe that university students should be free to choose their
preferred areas of study. In my opinion, society will benefit more if our students are passionate
about what they are learning.Besides, nobody can really predict which areas of knowledge will
be most useful to society in the future, and it may be that employers begin to value creative
thinking skills above practical or technical skills. If this were the case, perhaps we would need
more students of art, history and philosophy than of science or technology.

In conclusion, although it might seem sensible for universities to focus only on the most useful
subjects, I personally prefer the current system in which people have the right to study whatever
they like.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have received this email from an English-speaking pen friend.

I’m a rock fan. I can listen to rock all day. What about you? What kind of music do you like?
What is your favourite song and artist? Please write to tell me more about your music taste.

Write to your friend. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.

Model Answer:

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for your letter. I'm happy to tell you what you wanted to know - I'm mad about music!
My favourite is Vietnamese folk music. It is extremely diverse, but my favourite type is “danca”.
I've been a folk music fan for all my life, since my mother used folk music as my lullaby songs.

Some of my friends think I'm strange and old-fashioned - they often listen to pop music and their
idols are young and trendy artist. They're OK, of course, but I prefer listening to singer
ThanhThanhHien or AnhTho - you can try listening to their songs on YouTube. The singers have
got great voices and the lyrics are usually good, too.

I listen to country music nearly all the time. I usually listen with headphones on in my bedroom,
but sometimes I listen on the CD player with my parents. They are also big fans of folk music
like me.

Please write to me again soon.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about ex-prisoner:

It is true that ex-prisoners can become normal, productive members of society. Some people who
have been in prison become good citizens later, and it is often argued that these are the best
people to talk to teenagers about the dangers of committing a crime.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

It is true that ex-prisoners can become normal, productive members of society. I completely
agree with the idea that allowing such people to speak to teenagers about their experiences is the
best way to discourage them from breaking the law.

In my opinion, teenagers are more likely to accept advice from someone who can speak from
experience. Reformed offenders can tell young people about how they became involved in crime,
the dangers of a criminal lifestyle, and what life in prison is really like. They can also dispel any
ideas that teenagers may have about criminals leading glamorous lives. While adolescents are
often indifferent to the guidance given by older people, I imagine that most of them would be
extremely keen to hear the stories of an ex-offender. The vivid and perhaps shocking nature of
these stories is likely to have a powerful impact.

The alternatives to using reformed criminals to educate teenagers about crime would be much
less effective. One option would be for police officers to visit schools and talk to young people.
This could be useful in terms of informing teens about what happens to lawbreakers when they
are caught, but young people are often reluctant to take advice from figures of authority. A
second option would be for school teachers to speak to their students about crime, but I doubt
that students would see teachers as credible sources of information about this topic. Finally,
educational films might be informative, but there would be no opportunity for young people to
interact and ask questions.

In conclusion, I fully support the view that people who have turned their lives around after
serving a prison sentence could help to deter teenagers from committing crimes.

You have received this email from an English-speaking pen friend.

I’m fine but I’ve got a very busy week ahead. I’m a member of the school team and we are
preparing for an important match in the National Championship. Are you fond of football? Do
you watch football matches on TV?
What other sports do you enjoy?
Well, I’d better go now. I’ve got to do some more training - I don’t want to lose this match.
Take care and write back soon.

Write to your friend. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.

Model Answer:

Hi Chris,

How’s it going? Thanks for your last letter. I’m glad you are in your school football team now!
You should be proud of yourself!

In your letter you asked me about football. Well, I’m really fond of it. It’s a great sports and I’m
always happy when my team wins. But I don’t watch football matches on TV because it’s rather
boring. I prefer playing to watching as it’s more exciting. I’m also interested in roller-skating.
It’s fun to take part in street competitions and to perform different tricks.

Anyway, what about your preparation for the National Championship? Do you work hard? How
many times a week do you train? Do you get on well with your team-mates?

Well, I’d better go now as I have to tidy up my room. I wish you best luck with your match. And
don’t forget to write back soon!

Read the following text from an article about social media marketing:

Social networking sites are highly used by people across the world, especially by the young
generation. The communication of messages through these websites is fast and it’s having a
convincing impact on the youth. Many companies are using this mode to promote their goods
and to fascinate customers. It is said that social media marketing can influence what consumers
buy

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

Since the introduction of social media applications in the early 2000’s the world has become a
much smaller place. Social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have
become information sources for a majority of the global market. As such, I would agree that
marketing, which happens to be a source of information accessible on these platforms can
influence the consumers who use them. This notion is further aided by the rise in online retail
stores who conduct the bulk of their transactions online. This makes it easier for the consumer to
purchase from anywhere in the world.

As a consumer on social media, you are constantly bombarded with advertisements of various
products that are specifically designed to catch your attention. This means that most of the
adverts on your news feeds aren’t random and will almost always feature something you have
previously searched online or something currently popular or trending. Given the fact that most
social media users are young consumers who are influenced by current trends and happenings
these adverts will almost always catch their eye.

The habit of sharing, retweeting and liking also ensures that these adverts get around, quite fast.
As such, when an advert does reach your news feed you have already probably seen it on your
friend’s news feed. The truth is, adverts are a form of information and with the age of the
internet, information spreads faster than a wild fire. Therefore, it only makes sense that in the era
and age of technology, globalization and the need to be trendy, social media marketing can
influence what consumers buy.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about identity theft:

In many countries, financial crime involving identity theft is increasing. There are some causes
of this trend, and it has some negative effects on the victims involved.

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about the causes and the
effects of this issue. Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You
should write at least 250 words.
Model Answer:

There is no doubt that identity fraud is a great concern, especially in western countries where
people are most at risk. I think there are two main causes, and a number of damaging effects.

The major cause is probably the almost universal use of digital technology to store financial data
and undertake financial transactions. It is surprisingly easy for criminals to obtain personal
information about a possible victim, and then to use this information to impersonate the target.
Because bank accounts and loans can be applied for digitally, without the need for face-to-face
contact, the criminals are able to apply for financial products remotely, often before the victim is
even aware of the attack. The second key cause is, I believe, the increasing probability of
‘traditional’ crimes (such as armed robbery, mugging or burglary) being detected. When
criminals see thewidespread use of CCTV, DNA profiling and fingerprinting, they are less
inclined to indulge in suchold-fashioned crimes. Rather, they prefer the lower risk and more
profitable use of data-based crimes.

The effects on the unfortunate victims can be quite devastating. Firstly, there is the loss of money
from bank accounts or by being connected to a fraudulent loan. In some cases, this can take years
for the victim to pay back or resolve with the banks and the authorities. Secondly, there is the
damage to their credit rating, which means they may find it impossible to obtain legitimate credit
in future. In extreme cases, people’s employment prospects can even be damaged as well, as they
find themselves profiled as a financial risk.

Overall, the presence of technology and the decline of ‘traditional’ crimes are the key causes
behind this trend. The effects on the victims involve long-term financial hardship in many
instances.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Brown, (1)

I am writing to you asyour nephew, Thomas, had mentioned about you when he suggested a
place for me to stay when I come to England. I would be grateful if I could stay in your place for
five days; however, please feel free to let me know if it may cause any inconvenience to you. I
would like to thank you very much in advance, no matter what your decision is.

I should tell you a bit about myself. I am a senior student at Hanoi university, Vietnam and I am
an outgoing and open-minded person. I enjoy talking to people and making friends. My interests
are classical music and romantic movies.

I am planning to come next month, but the dates are flexible. If I could stay in your place, would
it be better for you if I came at the beginning of the month or at the end?

Finally, if possible, could you suggest any interesting places I could visit and see in the area? I
would be extremely grateful for any help you could give me.

Thank you very much.

Yours faithfully,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about police street patrols:

The rate of criminal activities is soaring in communities these days throughout the world, so
authorities should take effective actions regarding deterrence of this issue. It is always claimed
that police patrolling play a vital role in dropping crimes, although there are other supportive
measures that should be taken.

Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about how effective you
think police street patrols are and other ways of reducing crime you can propose. Include reasons
and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

We are all keen to reduce crime wherever possible, and the role of visible policing is a hotly
debated part of this. Personally, I feel that street patrols are highly effective, although there are
several supplementary methods too.
Regarding the effectiveness of patrols, evidence suggests that an increase in police on the streets
leads directly to a drop in crime, especially crimes of violence and robbery. This was the
experience of New York when it adopted the ‘zero tolerance’ policy in the 1990s, a high-profile
policing tactic which has been extended successfully to many other cities worldwide. When
compared to other tactics that have been tried, ranging from citizen patrols to CCTV, there is
little doubt that assertive police patrolling is the most effective resource we have.

Turning to other methods, we should supplement police patrols with coordinated action
elsewhere in the state. For instance, the courts should be prepared to issue deterrent sentences
and prisons should be run strictly. This would help to deter people from committing crimes in the
first place. Secondly, we should increase the resources available to the police away from the
streets aswell, for instance in detective and forensic departments, hopefully ensuring that
detection rates arehigh when crimes do occur. Moreover, individuals and businesses should step
up their own securityarrangements to complement the police presence. For example, improved
locks and lighting are simple measures which can reduce theft and burglary.

All in all, I feel that visible police patrols have been proved to be the most effective way to
reduce common crimes. Their effectiveness can be maximized by supporting action from
elsewhere in the police and justice system, and by private citizens doing their part as well.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Last week you saw a new film. Write an e-mail about the film to your English friend (at least 120
words) and speak about the following:

• write about the film (story, location, actors …)

• why you liked / did not like the film

• where you like watching films: in the cinema, or at home on TV/DVD (why)

• if you prefer watching films alone or together with others (why)

Model Answer:

Dear Lily,

I can’t wait to write to you to tell about a new film that I saw last night named “Shutter Island”. I
saw it in the cinema with my brother. I really looked forward to the film because it featured one
of my favorite actors - Leonardo Dicaprio. It’s a thriller and detective movie.
As a detective movie fan, you should not miss this film because it is very exciting and intriguing.
Besides, it was a little bit scary. It made my hair stand on end many times. I recommend you see
it in the cinema because you cannot enjoy it to the fullest on TV or DVD. You should invite
somebody to the film so that you are not alone during jumpscare scenes! You will love the film
because the plot is great and the performance of every actor and actress is excellent. Moreover,
the music of the film is wonderful.

After you see it, don’t forget to tell me what you think. I’m eager to discuss the film with you.

Love,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about modern lifestyle:

New trend of living has caused enormous problems for people nowadays. These could range
from physical and mental issues. However, there are effective measures that could be taken
regarding solving these problems.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about how effective you
think police street patrols are and other ways of reducing crime you can propose. Include reasons
and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Most people agree that modern lifestyles can be unhealthy, both physically and mentally. I
believe there are three main problems, but also some practical steps we can take.

Perhaps the largest problem is the issue of obesity, which is growing drastically in most Western
countries. With people working at desks and using transport rather than walking, weight gain
seems inevitable, and being overweight causes various medical issues including heart trouble and
strokes. Another major problem linked to lifestyle is poor diet, with people who are short of time
eating junk food rather than proper nutrients. Resultant health problems range from obesity to
high cholesterol and even organ failure. Finally, we must consider the issue of mental health.
Modern lifestyles are highly pressurised, with people expected to work at a fast pace for
extended periods, and little scope for family life or relaxation, leading to enormous stress and
anxiety.

Turning to possible solutions, the biggest step would be to improve the level of education
regarding health issues connected to lifestyle, especially obesity. The government, media and
schools should work together to raise awareness of the dangers and to promote sports and other
positive practices. A further step would be to use legislation to curb the consumption of
unhealthy foods, for example by imposing higher sales taxes or by restricting availability in retail
outlets. Furthermore, to deal with the psychological impacts, we should encourage employers to
adopt more flexible working practices, allowing workers to lead a fuller private life with less
stress.

Overall, the key problems of obesity and stress can be addressed through a combination of
awareness, targeted legislation and better employment practices.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

This is part of a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend.

Do you often have arguments with your parents? I do. My mother thinks that I spend too much
time hangingaround with my friends. Do you often meet your friends?
What do you usually do together? And what do you do when you disagree with your parents
about how you spend your free time?
Write back soon.
Love,
Mary

Write back to Mary. In your letter,

 answer her questions

 ask 3 questions about her relations with her younger sister.
You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Mary,

Thanks for your letter. I’m glad to hear that you are well.

I’m sorry you had arguments with your parents. As for me, actually I no problems with mine, but
we also have quarrels sometimes because I forget to tidy my room or spend too much time
watching TV. However, after that, I try to talk to them and find the solution. I can meet my
friends twice a week on Fridays and Sundays and we usually play volleyball together. It’s our
favouritesport.

And how do you get on with your sister? Do you spend much time being together? Do you help
her with her homework? I wish I had a sister or a brother!

Anyway, everything will be alright, so keep smiling whatever happens! I’d better go now as I’ve
got loads of homework (and housework) to do.

Please write back soon. I look forward to hearing from you.

Your friend,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article aboutchildren and video games:

During last twenty years, taste of children has changed enormously with respect to their
recreations. Nowadays they opt more for playing video games than playing sport or conventional
sort of games. Of course, this result in hazardous problems to them, that could be dealed with by
taking some effective measures.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about what problemsmight
these games cause, for children and society as a whole andhow these problems could be reduced.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

The almost universal availability of video games among children has presented us with a number
of challenges and decisions, none of which are straightforward. I believe there are three main
problems associated with these products, and also three remedies we can adopt.

Perhaps the major problem we need to deal with is the level of violence found in these games.
Many of them feature aggressive or warlike characters, ranging from soldiers to criminals and
killers. This inevitably leads children to believe that such behaviour is normal, or even desirable.
A second issue is the obsessive way that some children use the games – for example, preferring
their computers to real friendships, making these children isolated and socially naïve. Finally,
there are physical effects from excessive gaming, including eye strain, insomnia and damage to
posture. These can be difficult to reverse once they have taken hold.

Turning to possible solutions, one key step would be to legislate more strictly to control the
content of these games. They could, for instance, be reviewed by censors in the same way that
films are. This would prevent unsuitable material influencing young minds. To tackle the
problem of obsessive use, we could make more counselling and advice available through
schools. On the subject of physical side effects, advice on safe use could be included as part of
the packaging or even the game itself, so that youngsters are constantly aware of the risks.

To sum up, this is a problem that has both social and physical effects, and the solution will
require combined action by manufacturers, schools and authorities.

TASK 1:
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Harry who writes:

At school we are doing projects on famous singers from different countries. Could you telI me
about any famous Vietnamese singer? What is he or she famous for? How long has he/she been
singing? Do you enjoy his/her songs? Have you ever been to his/her concerts?
As for my school trip to New York last week, it was really wonderful...

Write back to Harry. In your letter,

 tell him about the singer you admire most of all

 ask 3 questions about his trip to New York.
You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Harry,

Thank you for your letter. It sounds like you had a great time in New York, doesn’t it?Which city
attractions did you visit? What impressed you most of all? Did you take any pictures?

I’m glad I can help you with your project on famous singers. Well, my favourite singer is My
Tam. She made her debut in 1999with the first demo song named “Please, dear”, so she has
already been singing for20 years. My Tam is one of the most famous pop singers in Vietnam and
she is known for her songs such as“I wish” and “The guitar of Students”. I enjoy her songs
because of her beautiful voice. Unfortunately, I’ve never been to her concerts but I’d love to.

Anyway, let me know if you have any other questions. I’d better go now as I have to do the
laundry.

Please write back soon.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about “cybercrime”:

Cybercrime is an ever-growing problem today, as so many people use various forms of

technology to store and transmit sensitive data. These crimes present a number of problems and
people are getting more concerned about them.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about what
problems‘cybercrime’ causes, and what solutions you can suggest for ordinary people and
businesses to take. Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You
should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Cybercrime is a cause of widespread concern today, as so many people use technology to store
and transmit sensitive data. There are a number of problems that people suffer as a result of these
crimes, but also some straightforward measures we can take to protect ourselves.

Perhaps the worst problem stemming from this is the financial impact. If someone has his or her
bank account emptied, or has false credit lines created under their name, they are potentially
liable for large sums of money. Even if they can avoid the consequences, their bank or finance
company has to cover the losses, which can damage their performance. A further problem is the
wayin which these stolen funds are used to subsidize other crimes, such as drug distribution or
eventerrorism. Once the money enters the criminal networks, we have no way of knowing how it
will beused. Finally, there is the problem of anxiety and stress caused to the innocent victims of
these crimes. The initial shock is often followed by months or years or legal wrangling,
paperwork and a sense of insecurity.

Turning to possible solutions, probably the most effective measure is to improve personal
security, ranging from passwords to the shredding of documents. This denies the criminals the
raw materials to work with. Secondly, we should raise awareness of the risks among the elderly
or the very young – two groups who are often specifically targeted – via publicity and public
education. Ultimately, however, it is the financial companies who can make the greatest
contribution, by increasing their security and detection systems – ideally in partnership with the
police.

Overall, the problems caused are both financial and social, and the solutions should involve
coordinated action by individuals, corporations and the state.

silver-coloured Rolex Datejust 41 watch and cost €5621 when I bought it new last month and I
still keep the bill. Its case diameter is 41 mm with steel bracelet and buckle and I kept it in a
black boxwhich engraved the brand name Rolex and my name.

I lost it when I was having dinner in a restaurant called Salathip in at 89 New Road, Bangkok. I
had been at the restaurant for around one hourr when I noticed it was missing.

I am entitled to make a claim for the value of the above mentioned item and request that you

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about prisons:

Imprisonment is often viewed as the best possible way to punish the criminal as it confines them
inside the four walls away from the family member and society. It is said that, “Prison is the only
truly effective form of punishment, because it separates criminals from society.”
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

There is no doubt that we need to find effective forms of punishment for criminals, and also find
ways to protect citizens from the threat of crime. I personally feel that prison is only one of a
range of options we should use, and is not always the most effective.

Firstly, I do not accept that all criminals need to be separated from society. Juvenile and minor
offenders can be punished through fines, community service or other non-custodial means. This
is cheaper than prison, and prevents the damage to the criminal’s family which in itself could
generate further social problems. Furthermore, by keeping these small-scale criminals in society,
we can try to rehabilitate them, for example through training or education programmes. This will
help to reduce reoffending in future.
Besides this, if offenders are believed to be a threat to their fellow citizens, there are ways of
containing them such as electronic tagging, curfews or regular reporting to the police. Such
methods have been shown to be effective in reducing criminal behaviour and are themselves
quite a strong punishment, as they restrict an offender’s freedom greatly. Finally, we should
remember that prisons are to some extent ‘schools of crime’ and in many cases prisoners end
their jail terms as more capable and determined criminals than when they entered.

Of course, it is true that in certain cases we need to both punish criminals and isolate them from
other people. I recognise that violent or dangerous people need to be imprisoned – yet I believe
this applies to a small minority of instances.

To conclude, I feel that prison is a last resort in cases where there is no alternative. This doesnot
make it the only effective punishment, but rather the most severe among a variety of
possibilities.

I’m taking lots of pictures at the moment. I can also access the Internet on it. In addition, I’ve got
a laptop but I use it mainly for study purposes, for example making presentations, writing essays
and doing researches. Of course we’ve got things like a TV, a smart TV box to connect the TV to
the Internet and a PlayStation game machine. My parents usually watch TV whereas my brother
spends many hours a day playing video games.

By the way, I’m glad you’ve made such progress in chess. Is it difficult to learn how to play it?
Will I be able to teach myself? How can I get started?

I’ve got to go now as I have to walk my dog in the park.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about equality in the number of male and female workers:

There are numerous objections towards the policy of employment throughout the world. It is
claimed by people that authorities should impose laws in which force corporations and
organizations to employ employees of both gender equally in all sector. In my opinion, we
should introduce laws to make businesses and state services employ equal numbers of male and
female workers in every department or area of the company.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

The issue of equality for men and women at work is still widely debated, despite the extensive
legislation that now exists in many countries. Personally, I do not feel that imposing a numerical
target for gender is a sensible idea, and I will explain why.

Firstly, we have to consider whether equal numbers of men and women really wish to do every
job which is available. For example, few women wish to be airline pilots, and only a minority of
school teachers are male. If we impose a law on airlines or schools, where will they find the
people to fill these posts willingly? Furthermore, there is the huge issue of the existing
workforce. Would it be right to dismiss a worker because he or she is of a certain gender, in
order to create a statistically perfect balance? The effects would be disastrous for many hard-
working people. Finally, I believe we should find ways to encourage equality of opportunity
through support and guidance, rather than top-down legislation. For instance, improved child
care facilities and subsidies would probably encourage more women into parts of the workforce
which may currently be difficult to enter.
I do understand the opposing view, which is that legislation is the quickest and most effective
way to achieve gender equality. Nevertheless, I feel that the disruptive effects of ‘overnight’
legislation would destabilise society and hinder many people’s prospects.

Overall, I believe that equality is an excellent goal for society to strive for. Above all, though, I
think that this needs to be a gradual process, based on careful support rather than sudden
legislation.

You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Akiko,

Thanks for your letter. I’m glad you have got the excellent score for the Math test.

I agree with you that English grammar is rather hard so I think it’s vital to learn grammar rules
and to practise it by doing exercises. As for me, after reading a topic in the grammar book, I will
do all the related exercises. I do it on a regular basis.

In my opinion, going to a language school is a great idea and I would love to go with you. We
could practise our English and visit lots of city attractions. I haven’t got any plans for this
summer, but I need to ask my parents first and I will inform you if they allow me to go or not.
Anyway, I would like to know what’s on your mind about the language school. Which course

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about tourism:

There are several proverbs and quotation that the best way to make people throughout the world
more familiar with each other. One of them is, ‘Tourism is always a force for good which
enables people of different countries to understand each other.’
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

The role of tourism in the world today is widely debated, with some people claiming that it is
indeed a force for international understanding. However, I personally do not entirely accept this,
and I will explain why in this essay.

Firstly, we must consider the potential negatives of contact between cultures. For example, when
western tourists visit untouched parts of the world, their stay causes pollution for local societies.
We see this in the litter left at Machu Picchu in Peru, and in the damage to ecology caused by
safari tourism in Africa. Furthermore, there are numerous examples of tension between tourists
and local cultures, ranging from drunken British tourists in Europe to American ‘spring breakers’
in Canadian or Latin American resorts. In these cases, tourism actually leads to resentment and
distrust between nationalities, not better understanding.

A further reason to be wary of this idea is the economic aspect. It is sometimes said that tourism
improves international relations because it encourages the flow of money from wealthy to less
developed countries. In reality, however, the wealth generated usually stays in the hands of
private companies or local officials, and rarely drips down into the population. Many of us have
visited less developed nations as tourists, and have witnessed at first hand the poverty that exists
outside the confines of the resort hotels. We leave with the impression that our stay has
contributed nothing to the lives of those we have observed.

This is not to say that tourism is entirely bad, of course. There are benefits in terms of improving
local infrastructure such as roads and airports. But to say that it is ‘always a force for good’ is to
ignore the various problems it causes.

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about saving money:

It is often considered by some that, money savings is a good practice when compared to
spending every now and then. Some people say, “It is better to save money than to spend it.”
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

With the world in such economic turmoil, many of us face difficult choices in managing our
money. Personally, I feel that saving is preferable to high spending, and I will explain why.

Firstly, saving money is a sensible precaution in a world where the future is uncertain. It is
possible, for example, that a person might meet unemployment, ill health or other crises at some
pointin life. It is essential to have some funds in reserve for these situations, and saving is for
most people the only way to achieve this. Furthermore, I believe that saving is itself a good
discipline for people to develop, as it builds skills of planning and reaching targets. We can see
this in the way that disciplined people build up quite large sums through small monthly
contributions to savings plans. In many cases this meets important objectives in their lives,
including large purchases such as cars or property. Finally, we have to remember the reasons for
the current economic problems besetting the world. The crisis was caused by excessive spending
and insufficient saving – not just by individuals, but by corporations and even governments
themselves. I feel that an emphasis on sensible saving should be a universal strategy now.

I do appreciate that some people think differently, saying that it is better to live for the moment
and spend accordingly. While some daily spending is essential, of course, I feel this is a
potentially unwise viewpoint, especially considering recent global events.

To conclude, I believe that saving is the wiser course, not just for financial but also for personal
and political reasons. Sensible saving is an invaluable skill and a buffer against uncertainty.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have received a letter from your bank, asking you to acknowledge receipt of a new bank
card. However, the card was missing from the envelope.

Write an email to the bank's head office. In your letter:

 explain why you are writing

 express concern about the missing card
 ask them what they intend to do
You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing with regard to a missing or stolen debit card from your bank. This is an urgent
matter as it will lead to negative consequences if the bank card is in the hands of the wrong
person.

I received a letter from your bank's head office this morning. It clearly stated that it enclosed my
new bank card and asked me to inform if I had received it. However, the envelop seemed to have
already been torn when it arrived in my mailbox. What concerned me more was that the debit
card was not enclosed. I checked my mailbox several times but found nothing. I am worried that
someone has opened the envelop and possibly stolen the card.

Therefore, I request that you terminate the existing debit card immediately. The debit card in
question is related to my account number 34354322 at your Hanoi branch. After it has been
cancelled, please send me a new one as soon as possible because I may need to use it during my
overseas trip next week.

Thank you very much in advance.

Yours sincerely,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about gap year:

There are arguments that students who graduated from high school should have a year break
before enrolling in college or university as it will give them several opportunities and
advantages. However, other individuals believe that students must have a continuous education.
It seems reasonable to argue that a year break between secondary and tertiary education is not a
reasonable perspective.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about both points of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:
While gap years are increasingly popular, they continue to be rather controversial because the
benefits are hard to quantify exactly. There are arguments on both sides of this very topical
debate, and I will discuss them now.

On the one hand, opponents of gap years point to the cost involved in areas such as air fares,
accommodation and living expenses. All this money has to come from the student’s family, or
even from borrowing to be paid later. Secondly, it is often said that gap years take a young
person’s focus away from studying, and allows them to get involved in distractions such as
travelling. This can make it hard to adjust to university life, damaging the student’s performance.
Finally, there is a concern over the safety of young people if they are travelling to remote places.
Being kidnapped or mugged is a poor start to an academic career, after all.

On the other hand, supporters of gap years say that the skills learned outweigh the disadvantages.
They highlight the independence and assertiveness that a student will acquire, in areas such as
time management and interpersonal skills. They also say that these skills lead to greater career
success later in life, thus cancelling out the costs involved. Furthermore, there are manyexamples
of young people using gap years to achieve something significant, whether in voluntary work or
in a sector of business that interests them.

In conclusion, my own feeling is that a year off can indeed be a useful activity, with the

that the year is planned carefully and used for something genuinely worthwhile.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

This is part of a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend.

By the way, we are doing a project at college on the fashion industry in different countries. It
would be nice if you could tell me what clothes are popular with teenagers in Vietnam. Do you
have any special fashion for teens?
What kind of clothes do you prefer?
Write back soon.
All my love,
Timmy
Write a letter to Timmy.

In your letter

 answer his questions

 ask 3 questions about his tastes in clothes
You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.
Model Answer:

Dear Timmy,

I was so happy to receive your letter. It was great to hear your news.

In your letter you asked me about popular teenage clothes in Vietnam. Well, I guess today’s
teenagers have a new tag line, ‘I can wear anything I want.’ Unisex fashion has become trendy in
the recent years. You can see in urban areas, more and more boys wear colorful and flower-
patterned clothes, earrings and handbagswhen girls wear pants, jeans, tuxedo and other items that
previously worn by male. As for me, I’m not a person who follows fashion trend. I always enjoy
a popular layered style and I usually wear black trousers, whiteshirts and open cardigans as
they’re very comfortable and easy to be combined with different accessories.

Anyway, write back and tell me about your tastes in clothes. What kind of clothes do you prefer?
Do you follow any fashion trends? Do you enjoy wearing a school uniform?

Well, I’d better go now as I have do my homework. Take care and keep in touch!

Best wishes,

TASK 2:

Read the following text from an article about helping people in other nations:

There is an opinion that to assist all needy people around the world is quite unreachable so the
best way is to only focus on matters of each one’s nations. We cannot help everyone in the world
that needs help, so we should only be concerned with our own communities and countries.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

Some people believe that we should not help people in other countries as long as there are
problems in our own society. I disagree with this view because I believe that we should try to
help as many people as possible.

On the one hand, I accept that it is important to help our neighbours and fellow citizens. In most
communities there are people who are impoverished or disadvantaged in some way. It is possible
to find homeless people, for example, in even the wealthiest of cities, and for those who are
concerned about this problem, there are usually opportunities to volunteer time or give money to
support these people. In the UK, people can help in a variety of ways, from donating clothing to
serving free food in a soup kitchen. As the problems are on our doorstep, and there are obvious
ways to help, I can understand why some people feel that we should prioritise local charity.

At the same time, I believe that we have an obligation to help those who live beyond our national
borders. In some countries the problems that people face are much more serious than those in our
own communities, and it is often even easier to help. For example, when children are dying from
curable diseases in African countries, governments and individuals in richer countries can save
lives simply by paying for vaccines that already exist. A small donation to an international
charity might have a much greater impact than helping in our local area.

In conclusion, it is true that we cannot help everyone, but in my opinion national boundaries
should not stop us from helping those who are in need.

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Nancy who writes

In your letter you said you were organising a surprise party for your friend. Was it difficult to
organise? Did you decorate the place? What kind of food did you provide? What did your friend
say?
I’d love to hear how it went because my parents let me have a big party at home on my birthday
but I’ve got to organise everything myself I’ve never done anything like that before.
Write a letter to Nancy.

In your letter

 answer her questions giving relevant details

 ask 3 questions about her birthday party
You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Nancy,

It was great to receive your letter and to learn the latest news! I wish you a happy birthday and
many happy returns of the day!

In your letter you asked me about how to organise a surprise party. Well, actually it wasn’t very
difficult. A friend of mine offered her flat for the party because her parents went on a business
trip. We decorated it with flowers, balloons and streamers. We also bought a birthday cake, fruit
and some coke. We sang the “Happy Birthday” song, then danced and played different games,
such as “Truth or Dare?” and some board games. Our friend was excited. She said she had never
had such a great party before. I hope this will help you to organise an unforgettable party too.

Anyway, write back soon and tell me how your birthday party went. Did you have many guests?
What did you do? Did you enjoy your party?

Unfortunately, I have to stop now as it’s time for me to do homework.

Lots of love,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about music:

Music is a magical factor helping us reduce the stress in life. Today, we listen to several kinds of
music and I think the traditional music of a nation is more significant than the international one.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about why we need music
and if the traditional music of a country is more important than the international music that is
heard everywhere nowadays. Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer.
You should write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

It is true that a rich variety of musical styles can be found around the world. Music is a vital part
of all human cultures for a range of reasons, and I would argue that traditional music is more
important than modern, international music.

Music is something that accompanies all of us throughout our lives. As children, we are taught
songs by our parents and teachers as a means of learning language, or simply as a form of
enjoyment. Children delight in singing with others, and it would appear that the act of singing in
a group creates a connection between participants, regardless of their age.

Later in life, people’s musical preferences develop, and we come to see our favourite songs as
part of our life stories. Music both expresses and arouses emotions in a way that words alone
cannot. In short, it is difficult to imagine life without it.

In my opinion, traditional music should be valued over the international music that has become
so popular. International pop music is often catchy and fun, but it is essentially a commercial
product that is marketed and sold by business people. Traditional music, by contrast, expresses
the culture, customs and history of a country. Traditional styles, such as quan ho and cailuong,
connect us to the past and form part of our cultural identity. It would be a real pity if pop music
became so predominant that these national styles disappeared.
In conclusion, music is a necessary part of human existence, and I believe that traditional music
should be given more importance than international music.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You eat at your company canteen at lunch time every day. However, you think it needs some
improvements. Write a letter to the head of Admin Department in your company. In your letter:

 explain what you like about the canteen

 say what is wrong with it
 suggest how it could be improved
You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

Model Answer:

Dear Mr. Chris,

I am writing with regard to our company canteen. Since almost every employee spends some
time here every day, I believe it is in everyone's best interest to find ways to improve the quality
of this central eatery.

The canteen itself is modern, spacious and attractive. The seating area provides an open, airy and
outdoor feeling which makes it very pleasant to eat meals there. This is further enhanced by the
large green plants and flowing water fountains.

The main problem with the canteen is in the food served. First of all, there is a very limited
selection available. If we don’t choose to eat rice, we can only chooseinstant noodles. Sometimes
there are days that we want to eat something other than rice.It would be wonderful to have some
choices likehamburgers, beef or chicken noodles, pizzas and spaghettis added to the menu.
Secondly, the prices are a little bit too high at the moment. We have unfortunately seen two price
hikes in the last two years.

I am sure if we offer a wider range of foods, at better prices, the canteen will continue to run
profitably as more employees choose to eat there.

Yours faithfully,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text froman article aboutteenagers’ volunteer work:

Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their free time to
help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individual teenager and
society as a whole.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

Many young people work on a volunteer basis, and this can only be beneficial for both the
individual and society as a whole. However, I do not agree that we should therefore force all
teenagers to do unpaid work.

Most young people are already under enough pressure with their studies, without being given the
added responsibility of working in their spare time. School is just as demanding as a full-time
job, and teachers expect their students to do homework and exam revision on top of attending
lessons every day. When young people do have some free time, we should encourage them to
enjoy it with their friends or to spend it doingsports and other leisure activities. They have many
years of work aheadof them when they finish their studies.

At the same time, I do not believe that society has anything to gain from obliging young people
to do unpaid work. In fact, I would argue that it goes against the values of a free and fair society
to force a group of people to do something against their will. Doing this can only lead to
resentment amongst young people, who would feel that they were being used, and parents, who
would not want to be told how to raise their children. Currently, nobody is forced to volunteer,
and this is surely the best system.

In conclusion, teenagers may choose to work for free and help others, but in my opinion we
should not make this compulsory.

TASK 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

 describe your new job
 tell him / her your other news
You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.

How are you? I hope you've been well. Sorry for having been out of touch for a short while.
There have been some changes in my life and I wanted to let you know the latest from my side.

The big news is that I have finally changed my job! Do you remember when you were here on
holiday, I always talked about how I hated my boring office job? Well, it was clear I needed a
change. So, finally, I took a vocational class in the evening and trained to be a make-up artist.
Now I'm having a self-employed business. I do the make-up for brides, models and whoever
wants to look more beautiful on a specific day. Each day, I look forward to going to work. Most
of mycustomers are lovely and I really enjoy beautifyingthem.I am a much happier person today
because of these recent changes.

So, how about you? I hope you'll have a chance to visit Hanoi again soon. In the meantime,
please write and let me know what's new with you.

Lots of love,

TASK 2:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Read the following text from an article about hobbies:

It is argued that the more challenging the hobbies are, the more satisfied people could feel. Some
people think that hobbies need to be difficult to be enjoyable.
Now, write an essay to an educated reader to discuss your opinions about this point of view.
Include reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250
words.

Model Answer:

Some hobbies are relatively easy, while others present more of a challenge. Personally, I believe
that both types of hobby can be fun, and I therefore disagree with the statement that hobbies need
to be difficult in order to be enjoyable.

On the one hand, many people enjoy easy hobbies. One example of an activity that is easy for
most people is swimming. This hobby requires very little equipment, it is simple to learn, and it
is inexpensive. I remember learning to swim at my local swimming pool when I was a child, and
it never felt like a demanding or challenging experience. Another hobby that I find easy and fun
is photography. In my opinion, anyone can take interesting pictures without knowing too much
about the technicalities of operating a camera. Despite being straightforward, taking photos is a
satisfying activity.
On the other hand, difficult hobbies can sometimes be more exciting. If an activity is more
challenging, we might feel a greater sense of satisfaction when we manage to do it successfully.
For example, film editing is a hobby that requires a high level of knowledge and expertise.

In my case, it took me around two years before I became competent at this activity, but now I
enjoy it much more than I did when I started. I believe that many hobbies give us more pleasure
when we reach a higher level of performance because the results are better and the feeling of
achievement is greater.

In conclusion, simple hobbies can be fun and relaxing, but difficult hobbies can be equally
pleasurable for different reasons.
