Introduction
The readymade garments (RMG) industry is vital to Bangladesh
economy. It contributes 84 percent of the total exports nearly 13
percent of the GDP and employs some four million workers. The
fourth industrial revolution is under way and bringing with it a
series of upheavals robotics, automation, machine learning, and
artificial intelligence are gradually making their way into the
production process all over the world which also significantly
impacted our RMG Industry.

● Online recruitment: Earlier company recruits by publishing notice at office gate . But now
Organizations connects with potential employee by circulating job opening via BDjobs,
LinkedIn etc and recruit by quicker process and cost effective way. Technology has made a
global field to interact between employer and employee.
● Making E database & Digital repository: Resumes ,prospective profile and employee
information are now kept in E-database. BGMEA has developed a digital repository platform
to store comprehensive date on RMG workers.
● E performance & management: Technology enables to collect, store and analyze data to
measure individuals’ performance that helps to make productive decision based on data
analysis rather than self-esteem.

● E-training: Availability of technology helps to teach without assembling in same place in same
time.
● E payment: Technology helps organizations to move into cashless wage payments. Payments
enable companies to minimize human interactions during financial transactions on workers
can get their wages on time. In November’ 19 Government, Manufacturer, Brands and other
related associations commit to digitize 90% RMG workers’ wages in Bangladesh by 2021.
Once Bangladesh Bank released the circular to digitize all RMG factories wages disbursement
in less than two weeks 1.92 million mobile wallet was created. During Covid-19 crysis 77%
workers were getting paid digitally.
3. Local Sourcing 13
With the increase of automation, With the technological advancement, it’s easier to
management's approach to invest in a find a global marketplace/ medium in your electronic
diverse production facility and creating new devices- where you can look for the raw material,
division in the organization such as own machine (like Alibaba) or even the experienced
design and developing team to help the workforce (linked in) to strengthen the sourcing

pool of eligible suppliers and collect /choose more in your control. The sourcing hubs can employ
the eligible product/ material to support various skilled people from abroad who can help the
their needs. local sourcing and production process that ultimately
benefits the purpose of local sourcing.
3. Local Sourcing 14

3. Local Sourcing 15
Fast fashion refers to inexpensive and trendy apparel that is made & sold in the market in record
times. As a result of fast fashion, the average amount spent on clothing by a consumer has increased
by 60 percent from 2000 to 2014. The lengthy design conceptualization, sample making, importing
raw materials from overseas and prototyping process that the RMG sector had earlier, haves been
replaced by a photo-realistic virtual simulation of design concepts. Also, the idea of utilizing locally
sourced raw material has become a trend so the backward linkage has been enriched. By incorporating
technology in automating various manufacturing steps, the requirements of fast fashion have been
met.
4. Digitalisation 16

5. Skill Development
The garments sector has played an important role in uplifting the economy of Bangladesh—
creating numerous jobs, pushing down the number of people living in poverty, and fostering
female labour participation. A major drawback however is that a large portion of the workers
employed in the RMG sector are unskilled; especially with automation.

5. Skill Development
Ensure Sustainability
According to McKinsey & Company, environmental sustainability will become a key apparel
purchasing factor by 2025. To address the linear supply chain and increased need for quick
transportation, companies need to make investments in automation, nearshoring, and
sustainability.
With these challenges in mind, the Bangladeshi RMG sector has made a robust initiative to adopt
‘green manufacturing’ practices – using innovative technology to bring solutions to saving energy,
water, and resources. Technology has been bringing in alternatives such as waterless dyeing, bio
fibers, conversion of waste to new fabrics, etc. So without skilled workforce it is not possible to
keep pace with these new technology and that’s why management are focusing on technological
skill development of the workforce.

Conclusion
Despite the challenges, Bangladesh's RMG sector has a bright future as new possibilities
emerge. Due to the US-China trade war, for example, US-based fashion businesses are
transferring their sourcing away from China, and Bangladesh is one of the greatest options
available. Some Chinese RMG factories have already relocated to Dhaka and begun operations.
Furthermore, it is an appealing solution for RMG goods due to its adoption of compliance,
transparency, factory and occupational safety, and green industrialisation. The RMG sector may
once again become the hero of the Bangladesh economy with effective labour force training,
finance for SMEs, and widespread use of technology throughout the industry.
