The Monkey and

the Dolphin
M any years ago, there was a sailor who found himself
in a far-off port. He wandered through the markets
and marvelled at the things the merchants were selling.
There were jewels, statues and vases, as
well as exotic spices that smelled wonderful!

But what really amazed him was a tiny

creature in a cage. It had big eyes, clever
little hands and a long tail.

“What is that?” he asked.

Worlds of Wonder

The World

O n a little island at the edge of the

world, there lived a girl whose
name was Repeka.
Well, it wasn’t really at the edge of the world –
Repeka knew that the world was round. But the
place where she lived with her uncle and aunt was
in the middle of a vast ocean and far from anywhere.

Repeka’s uncle and aunt loved her very much, but

she thought that living on a tiny island was boring.

Her aunt clucked kindly as she slid a steaming

flatbread onto the girl’s plate.

“Don’t worry, dear!” she said. “You’ll get to see

the world soon enough. When your parents have
settled into their new jobs and sorted out their
house overseas, you can all be together again!”
But Repeka paid no attention, because she
was busy daydreaming.

When dinner was over, she went to her

that thrust out into the ocean. It was high
and round and looked like a turtle shell,
which was why people called it Turtle Rock.

When she felt sad, Repeka would go

A ponibolinayen was woken up by the sound of her
grandmother calling her.

“Get up, sleepyhead! You must go and gather leaves for the family feast!”

The girl crawled out of bed and began combing her long hair. Everyone
said it was the most impressive mane in the village, for it was bright red
and glowed like a flame!

When her hair was smooth and shiny, she set off into the forest.

It was a beautiful morning, but she paid no attention to the cool breeze,
the scent of the flowers, or the birds that sang in the trees. She was looking
for siksiklat leaves, which were the tastiest in the forest!

After searching for more than an hour, Aponibolinayen spotted a siksiklat

vine that was covered with bright green leaves.
“They are perfect!” said the girl. Feeling curious, she knocked on

The Enchanted

I n Flanders, there once lived a king who loved doing

nothing. His only hobby was birdwatching!

His son could not have been more different.

He was restless and adventurous! He dreamed
of travelling to other lands and seeing all the
exotic things they did not have in Flanders.
Things like wonderful flowers and fruits and
colourful birds… He thought his country would
be a nicer place if it had a bit more variety!

The young prince’s name was Desire, and

it suited him – most of the girls of Flanders
thought he was very handsome!

But Desire did not want to marry, for he was

always dreaming about the wonders that
lay beyond the horizon...

One morning, a bishop came to the palace,

carrying something round and orange.

“What is that?” asked the king.

The King’s Ears

T he people of Ireland were very curious about their
king’s strange appearance. He always wore a hood
on his head, with his crown on top of it!
“Why do you think that is?” they asked each other. They came up with
all kinds of wild theories, but nobody knew the answer.

The king also let his hair grow very long. He only had it cut once a year –
and the person who cut it always disappeared after giving the ruler a trim!

Before long, no barber in the kingdom wanted to do the job. The king then
held a lottery instead – the person who ‘won’ had to give the king a haircut…

The Greatest
Gift of All
W hen Fatima woke up, she thought she was at sea!
The sand dunes of the desert looked silvery in the
moonlight – like waves on the ocean.
The camel that she and her little sister Maryam were riding on rocked
back and forth like a boat as it walked across the sand.

“Why did we have to leave our home?” she asked her father,
who was riding on the camel in front of hers.

He turned around in his saddle and looked at her kindly.

“Because there was a war in Tunisia,” he said,

“and all the trouble that comes with it. I did
not want you or little Maryam to grow

“But where are we going?”

Her father smiled. “Our new

33
This comforted Fatima. Her father was a wise man,
and she trusted him. She soon fell asleep again,
holding her sister in her arms.

When they arrived in Fez, though, Fatima wasn’t impressed.

It was a town made up of lots of square brick buildings stacked
together like toy blocks, and it was full of people. The little

She stared at the bustling streets. There were people from

Myths and Legends

The Golden Chain

T he Yoruba people of West Africa believed that the
universe was created by a supreme being, whose
name was Olorun.
At that time, the Earth did not exist. Olorun lived in the sky, where he made
a giant baobab tree grow.

After uncounted ages, Olorun grew lonely, so he created spirits called orishas
to serve him. They lived in the shade of the baobab tree, and Olorun gave
them food, fine clothes, gold jewellery and anything else they wanted.

The orishas were happy living under the tree. “Why should we go
anywhere else?” they would say. “Olorun and the baobab tree
give us everything we need!”

But Obatala was different from the other orishas. He was curious about
what existed beyond the tree, and was always asking questions.

40
One day, he asked Olorun, Obatala went to Orunmila, the wisest

The supreme being smiled. “What will I need to make a new

6 MAKE AN EGG-CARTON PLANTER
Obatala grew new plants from seeds. Now, you can
sprout seeds too, using an egg carton as a tray!
GROW
N-UP!

• You will need an empty egg carton, scissors, blue and white
paint, a paint brush, a jar of water to wash your brush in,
potting soil or compost, an old spoon, a little stick and
some seeds. (Parsley, lettuce, alfalfa and tomato seeds
are easy to grow!) You will also need a sunny windowsill
to place your planter on, and a spray bottle is ideal for
watering your seedlings with!
• First, carefully cut the lid off the egg carton with the scissors. Ask an adult to help!
• Next, paint waves on the bottom of the egg carton – use blue and white paint to
make wavelike patterns. This will represent the sea that Obatala created new
land on. Mix the paints a bit to make new tones!
• Once the paint is dry, it’s time to add the earth! Carefully spoon potting soil into the
hollows of the egg carton. It’s best to do this outside so you won’t make a mess!
• Use your little stick to gently poke a 1 cm-deep hole in the soil in each hollow.
Then, drop a seed or two into each hole and gently fill it in.
• Place the egg-carton planter on a warm, sunny windowsill and wait! Don’t forget
to water it every day. Once the sprouts have several leaves, you can plant them
in a pot or garden.
UPCYCLING IS FUN! You can use empty tins as plant pots
