The Value of Picture‐Story Books

David Hornsby

Picture-story books are created by talented people to tell truths, to create fantasies, to
entertain, to stimulate imagination, to provide information, to invite reader response,
and for a multitude of other purposes.

When we first share a picture-story book with children, our first priority is to honour
the author and illustrator by using the books for the purposes the creators intended.
Then, when the children are engaged, they are more receptive to learning through the
language and about the language.

The books become familiar because they are shared again and again. Now the
children can be helped to move “from the known to the unknown” (from engagement
with the text to learning about the nature of our written language).

For example, in the context of a complete story, children get a ‘feel’ for the meaning
of unknown or difficult words. In Diary of a Wombat, the text and illustrations help
children to ‘feel’ the meaning of words such as invading and territory:

Discovered flat, hairy creature Jackie French & Bruce Whatley

invading my territory. Diary of a Wombat
Sydney: HarperCollins, 2002
Fought major battle with
flat, hairy creature.

After sharing Dilly Duckling with young children,

it’s as easy as falling off a log to help them
learn the relationship between the sound /d/
and the letter ‘d’.

Many picture-story books help children to detect rhyme. After enjoying the story,
and responding to it, they can then discover how there are different spellings for the
same sound.

Graphophonic Relationships

Graphophonic relationships are best learnt in context. The lists of picture-story books
(see www.davidhornsby.com.au/teacher materials) provide an excellent starting point.

if you know other picture-story books that should be

added to these lists, please click the email button on
my website and send me a message with details about
the book. The lists will be up-dated as appropriate.

General Notes

1. Publication details may vary in different countries and for different editions. If
you find any errors, please send correction details. (Simply click the ‘email’
button on my website.)

2. There are lsits provided for 43 of the 44 sounds in Australian English. There is no
list for the schwa (ǝ) sound – the very short, unaccented vowel.

3. Each list gives the most common spellings of a single sound. Therefore, the lists
are organised by sound, not letter. Consequently, there are no lists for:
- the letter ‘q’ (‘q’ is a spelling for the /k/ sound, so is found in the /k/ list)
- the letter ‘x’ (‘x’ represents two sounds, /k/ +/s/).

4. The chart for each sound shows:

- the common spellings of that sound (with a key word for each)
- the IPA symbol for the sound (International Phonetic Alphabet)
- sample words
- picture-story books as starting points for your teaching.

5. Remember, help me to keep the lists growing and up-to-date by sending details of
other high-quality picture-story books that can lead to effective teaching of
graphophonic connections.

A PHONEME LIST FOR AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH

You may copy this list to keep a record of the opportunities you have to highlight the spelling patterns
for the phonemes in our language (ie. the letters we use to spell the sounds we hear).
Record the text you used (or any other context) and the date. You will have opportunities to cover the
‘phonic elements’ several times over. The text dictates which phonic elements you will highlight (it is
not the other way around).
