Coordinate System Conversion Solutions

The document contains solutions to examination questions on coordinate system conversions. It provides the steps and calculations to convert between polar, cartesian and spherical coordinate systems for different points. It also includes the transformation matrix and calculations to map coordinates between two coordinate frames Ov and O1 related by translations and rotations. Maximum heights and widths of an object viewed on a screen placed at the viewpoint are also calculated for different roll numbers.

Mid-Term Examination - Spring 2020

15th August 2020
IM-212 Computer-aided Engineering Design (CAED) - Paper A, B, C Solution

2(a.i) A coordinate P(10mm, 60o,20mm) is given in Polar Coordinate System, covert it into the
Cartesian and Spherical Coordinate Systems?
Paper A
Sol. Given that (R, , z) =(10mm, 60o,20mm)
For Cartesian Coordinate System
z = 20mm
x = R. cos  = 10. cos (60) = 5.00mm,
y = R. sin  = 10. sin 60) = 8.66mm
Coordinate is (5mm, 8.66mm, 20mm)
For Spherical Coordinate System
 = 60o
r = √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 = √52 + 8.662 + 202 = 22.361𝑚𝑚
φ= cos-1 (R/r) = cos-1 (10/22.361) = 63.43o
Coordinate is (22.361mm, 60 o, 63.43o)
2([Link]) A coordinate P(10mm, 20mm, 50mm) is given in Cartesian Coordinate System, covert it into the Polar
and Spherical Coordinate Systems?
Paper B
Sol. Given that (x, y, z) =(10mm, 20mm, 50mm)
For Polar Coordinate System
z = 20mm
R = √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = √102 + 202 = 22.36𝑚𝑚
 = cos-1 (x/R) = cos-1 (10/22.36) = 63.42o
Coordinate is (22.36mm, 63.42o, 50mm)
For Spherical Coordinate System
= cos-1 (x/R) = cos-1 (10/22.36) = 63.42o
r = √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 = √102 + 202 + 502 = 54.772𝑚𝑚
φ= cos-1 (R/r) = cos-1 (22.36/54.772) = 65.90o
Coordinate is (54.772mm, 63.42 o, 65.90o)

2([Link]) A coordinate P(10mm, 30o, 60o) is given in Spherical Coordinate System, covert it into the Cartesian and
Polar Coordinate Systems?
Paper C
Sol. Given that (r, , φ) =(10mm, 30o, 60o)
For Polar Coordinate System
 = 30o
R = 𝑟. 𝑐𝑜𝑠φ = 10. cos(60) = 5.00𝑚𝑚
z = 𝑟. 𝑠𝑖𝑛φ = 10. sin(60) = 8.66𝑚𝑚
Coordinate is (5.00mm, 30o, 8.66mm)
For Cartesian Coordinate System
z = 𝑟. 𝑠𝑖𝑛φ = 10. sin(60) = 8.66𝑚𝑚
x = R. cos  = 5. cos (30) = 4.33mm,
y = R. sin  = 5. sin (30) = 2.50mm
Coordinate is (4.33mm, 2.5mm, 8.66mm)
