Learning Objectives ‘The main learning objectives of 2.008x are to: + Teach the fundamentals and applications of a variety of manufacturing processes involving different formation physics and materials, including: machining, injection molding, additive manufacturing, sheet forming, and casting, + Emphasize the four attributes by which the performance of a manufacturing process, machine, or system can be measured: rate, cost, quality, and flexibility. Apply quantitative and qualitative analysis to determine and compare the performance of manufacturing processes by these metrics. + Recognize sources of variation in manufacturing processes, and explain how to monitor and control variation using statistical methods. + Teach how to estimate the cost of a manufacturing process versus production volume, and how design and process choices influence cost. ‘+ Use process demonstrations, example components, and videos to reinforce the principles of process physics, design for manufacturing, and factory operation + Establish a perspective on the future of manufacturing, and how it will be shaped by advanced technologies such as 3D printing and robotics, and geographic and economic considerations.
