Bites and stings
lyme
The incubation period for Lyme disease is 3 to 32 days. The
initial infection can cause an expanding round or oval red spot
on the skin and associated flu-like symptoms within days to a
month after the tick bite. Early symptoms can include achiness,
chills, fever, sweats, fatigue, malaise, headache, stiff neck,
muscle soreness, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, and sore
throat. The combination of the skin lesion and flu-like
symptoms are the primary manifestations of acute-stage Lyme
disease, although the rash and flu-like symptoms are not
always present.

Acute Lyme disease is not associated with typical cold-like

symptoms of runny nose, prominent cough, or prominent
diarrhea.

the bite
Rhus tox 30c, every hour for muscle soreness and aching
joints, less frequently as improvement establishes, for up to
one month
Pyrogenium 30c, if sepsis presents, which is serious. Seek
professional help if possible.

A third option is to make a remedy from the tick that bit you.

1. Place the tick in a small, clean, odor-free glass container

with a tight-fitting lid.
2. Add 1 oz- vodka, brandy or grain alcohol.
3. Shake the mixture, let it break down, and dissolve for up
to an hour.
4. Using a pipette or dropper, take 1 drop from this mixture
and place it in a second-lidded glass jar.
5. Add 9 drops of alcohol.
6. Put the lid on the container.
7. Smack the bottom of the container against the palm of
your hand or a hard book 10 - 20 times.
8. One drop from this mixture equals 1x potency. Repeat
steps 3-4 to continue to dilute the mixture until it has been
diluted 6 times.
9. At this point, this is a 6x. It can be continued up to 30x.
The 30x is taken 2 times a day.

The same process can be used for other poisonous animal bites
such as remedies made from snake venom.

Bites and stings
rocky mountain spotted fever
The following are the most common symptoms of RMSF:
A non-itchy rash that usually starts on the hands, arms,
feet, and legs and occurs 5 to 10 days after the bite. The
rash consists of flat, pink spots.
Fever
Headache
Confusion
Decreased appetite
Chills
Sore throat
Stomach ache
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Body aches
Sensitivity to light

Diagnosis is based on symptoms and history of a tick bite. How

the rash looks is important. Skin samples and lab tests are
usually done to rule out other conditions and confirm the
diagnosis.

Treatment may include antibiotics (usually doxycycline) until

several days after the fever goes away.

RMSF complications can include

Nerve damage
Hearing loss
Incontinence
Partial paralysis
Tissue death (gangrene) of toes or fingers
Rarely, death

spider bites
Black Widow
The black widow is a medium-sized spider; about a half-
inch long. Two species are common in the United States:
The southern black widow. This spider has a shiny,
black, globe-shaped belly (abdomen). You’ll know it by
the red hourglass mark on the underside.
The northern black widow. You’ll notice a row of red
spots down the middle of the upper surface of its
abdomen. It also has two crosswise bars on the
underside. Just to make things interesting, the
markings can also be yellow or white. The spider may
be brown or have red legs.
These spiders are active at night. They prefer dark corners
or crevices, like garages. They only bite when disturbed.
Symptoms
Affects the nervous system
Pain
Burning, swelling, and redness at the site
May even see two fang marks
Other symptoms include:
Muscles hurt and get stiff, usually within 8 hours
Nausea or vomiting
Trouble breathing
Serious belly pain or cramping
Heavy sweating
Rash and itching
Swollen eyelids
Weakness or shaking
Lachesis 30c every 10-30 minutes until improvement is
seen.
Latrodectus mactan 30c if Lachesis fails to act.
Ledum 30c if the wound is cold to the touch and feels
better with cold applications.

Brown Recluse
The brown recluse spider likes to live in dark, undisturbed
places inside the house, such as under furniture, inside
closets, inside heating vents and conduits, in cracks, and
among old books, boxes, toys, and clothes or outside under
rocks or inside hollow tree trucks. This spider is nocturnal,
shy, and usually non-aggressive. It can live up to six months
without food or water, hiding in its lair during the day and
roaming about at night.
People are most often bitten when they touch a spider that
is caught between a part of the body and another surface,
for example, hiding inside clothing or shoes or under
furniture. Bites may also happen, somewhat rarely, to a
sleeping person when the spider climbs up the bed sheets.
At first, the area around the bite appears swollen but may
not become painful until hours later. The area then turns
red and hardens. It can eventually turn into an ulcer with a
dry bottom, blue or gray borders, and a red center. Other
symptoms include fever, joint pain, shivering, nausea, and
vomiting. Healing can take months and may leave a scar. In
serious cases, surgery may be needed to remove necrotic
tissue.

Lachesis 30c every 10-30 minutes until improvement is

seen.
Latrodectus mactan 30c if Lachesis fails to act.
Ledum 30c if the wound is cold to the touch and feels
better with cold applications.

Bites and stings
snake bites
Most snakes aren't dangerous to humans. Only about 15%
worldwide and 20% in the United States are venomous. In
North America, these include the rattlesnake, coral snake,
water moccasin, and copperhead. Their bites can cause severe
injuries and sometimes death.

With the exception of the coral snake, most venomous snakes

in North America have eyes like slits and are known as pit
vipers. Their heads are triangular and they have fangs. The coral
snake has a rounded head and round pupils. Nonvenomous
snakes typically have rounded heads, round pupils, and no
fangs.

Most snakebites occur on the extremities. Typical symptoms of

the bite from a nonvenomous snake are pain and scratches at
the site.

Usually, after a bite from a venomous snake, there is severe

burning pain at the site within 15 to 30 minutes. This can
progress to swelling and bruising at the wound and all the way
up the arm or leg. Other signs and symptoms include nausea,
labored breathing, and a general sense of weakness, as well as
an odd taste in the mouth.

Some snakes, such as coral snakes, have toxins that cause

neurological symptoms, such as skin tingling, difficulty
speaking, and weakness. Sometimes, a venomous snake can
bite without injecting venom. The result of these "dry bites" is
irritation at the site.

11
Bites and stings
snake bites
If a venomous snake bites you, call 911 or your local emergency
number immediately, especially if the bitten area changes
color, begins to swell, or is painful. Many emergency rooms
stock antivenom drugs, which may help you.

If possible, take these steps while waiting for medical help:

Move beyond the snake's striking distance.
Remain still and calm to help slow the spread of venom.
Remove jewelry and tight clothing before you start to
swell.
Position yourself, if possible, so that the bite is at or below
the level of your heart.
Clean the wound with soap and water. Cover it with a
clean, dry dressing.

Caution

Don't use a tourniquet or apply ice.

Don't cut the wound or attempt to remove the venom.
Don't drink caffeine or alcohol, which could speed your
body's absorption of venom.
Don't try to capture the snake. Try to remember its color
and shape so that you can describe it, which will help in
your treatment. If you have a smartphone with you and it
won't delay your getting help, take a picture of the snake
from a safe distance to help with identification.

Bites and stings
snake bites
Crotalidae/Pit Viper Snakes
Rattlesnakes
Water Moccasins
Copperheads
Bushmasters

Symptoms of a pit viper snakebite usually appear within a few

minutes to a few hours after a bite and may include:
Severe, immediate pain with rapid swelling.
Bruising of the skin.
Trouble breathing.
Changes in heart rate or rhythm.
A metallic, rubbery, or minty taste in the mouth.
Numbness or tingling around the mouth, tongue, scalp,
feet, or the bite area.
Swelling in lymph nodes near the bite.
Signs of shock.
Other symptoms may be caused by the bite itself or from fear
or worry after being bitten and include:
Fainting or feeling faint
Sweat and chills
Nausea and/or vomiting
Weakness with a dizzy feeling

13
Bites and stings
snake bites
The severity of symptoms will depend on the type of snake
that bit, how much venom was injected with the bite
(envenomation), and personal health risks. Even if there are no
symptoms within 8 hours of a bite, continue to watch for
symptoms for up to 2 weeks.

If there are no symptoms within 8 to 12 hours, the snake might

not have injected any venom; this is called a dry bite. At least
25%, perhaps up to 50%, of bites are dry.
Dry bites or bites where only a very small amount of
venom is injected may cause slight bleeding, pain, and
swelling at the bite injury.
If a moderate amount of venom was injected, it is more
likely to have severe pain, swelling of the whole limb, and
general ill feelings, such as nausea, vomiting, and
weakness. Swelling of the whole limb is an effect of the
venom and can cause compartment syndrome. This is rare.
Large amounts of venom usually cause severe pain and
severe swelling. There may be trouble breathing, moderate
to severe bleeding, and signs of shock after this type of
bite.

If venom is injected, about 35% are mild envenomations, 25%

are moderate envenomations, and 10% to 15% are severe.
It is important to remember that a snake only injects part of its
venom with each bite, so it can still bite after the first strike. A
dead snake, even one with a severed head, can bite and release
venom through reflexes for up to 90 minutes after it dies.

Bites and stings
scorpion stings
Symptoms
Pain, which can be intense
Numbness and tingling
Slight swelling
Warmth
Widespread (systemic) venom effects usually occur in children
who are stung and may include:
Difficulty breathing
Muscle twitching or thrashing
Unusual head, neck, and eye movements
Drooling
Sweating
Nausea and vomiting
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Accelerated heart rate (tachycardia)
Restlessness or excitability, or inconsolable crying in
children
As with other stinging insects, such as bees and wasps, it is
possible for people who have previously been stung by
scorpions to have allergic reactions with subsequent stings.
Reactions to these subsequent stings are sometimes severe
enough to cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis.
Signs and symptoms in these cases are similar to those of
anaphylaxis caused by bee stings and can include hives, trouble
breathing, and nausea and vomiting.
