10. CALCULATION QUESTIONS:

You have a Masonry Brick wall built on a reinforced concrete footing which has a door. Details of size
in image below and material densities.

MUST SHOW ALL CALCULATIONS ON NEXT PAGE

a) What is the total Mass in tonnes?

b) The force of the total structure?

c) If the allowable bearing pressure of the soil below the structure is 50 Kpa. What will happen
to the structure when it is built? Show calculations to justify answer.

Notes: Structure includes a 45mm softwood door.

Material Density: Reinforced Concrete 2500 kg/m3

Brickwork 1900 kg/m3

Softwood 550 kg/m3

11. The diagram below represents a new type of aerated concrete block.

It is proposed to deliver the blocks on pallets to site and they will be placed on a scaffold. Each pallet
will hold 60 blocks.

We have been advised that the scaffold can hold a maximum of 1 tonne

Each block has the following dimensions: 500 mm long x 250 mm high x 200 mm wide.

The block has also 2 circular cut outs that go thru the width of the block. These cut outs have a
diameter of 100 mm each.

The density of the aerated block is 350 kg/m 3

Using the above information determine the maximum number of blocks that may be placed on the
scaffold?
